Rangers transfer news as Cyriel Dessers to AEK hits snag, freed flop has three options and Cortes returns early
The 30-year-old striker is a target for the Greek giants but there is a stand-off over the fee
Rangers are playing hardball with AEK Athens over Cyriel Dessers - as the Greeks look to land the striker for a cut price fee.
He's verbally agreed a bumper deal that will see him earn around 1.8million euros a year with the former Super League champions.
All that's to be finalised now is a fee with Rangers and 30-year-old Dessers is reportedly being made to wait as the Ibrox chiefs wrestle over a transfer fee with AEK.
AEK - whose fierce rivals Panathinaikos face Rangers in the Champions League - were taken over by shipping magnate Marios Iliopoulos last year and the new owner is ready to push the boat out to land Dessers.
But Sport Time report that AEK hope to agree a fee of around £3.8million - with Rangers 'not at that level yet' on a player they paid £4.5m for, instead holding out for nearer £5m.
The Nigeria international has been the subject of regular interest in recent windows, with his agent Stijn Franics revealing that he had as many as TEN clubs sniffing about his signature back in January.
Dessers' former Ibrox team-mate Tom Lawrence is on the hunt for a new club after his injury-plagued time in Scotland came to an end.
The Wales international spent three seasons in Govan but was often on the treatment table as he failed to show his quality.
Hometown club Wrexham - newly promoted to the English Championship - are said to be interested along with Midlands rivals Coventry City and West Brom.
Meanwhile, the Rangers Review report that Oscar Cortes has returned to Glasgow early in a bid to hit the ground running under new boss Russell Martin.
The Colombian cost the club £4.5m from French side Lille after an initial loan spell but has also suffered with injuries.

Why Kylian Mbappe is benched for Real Madrid vs Al-Hilal at Club World Cup
Kylian Mbappe will start on the bench for Real Madrid's opening Club World Cup match against Al-Hilal on Wednesday. Xabi Alonso begins his reign as Madrid's new head coach against last year's Saudi Pro League champions in Group H. However, Madrid will be without Mbappe in their starting line-up as he starts the game on the bench at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The 26-year-old, who scored 43 goals in his first season with Madrid, missed Tuesday's training session ahead of the game against Al-Hilal as he is suffering from a fever. 'Kylian was feeling a little better, but not enough,' Alonso said after Tuesday's training session. 'It's better for him not to train. We'll wait until the last minute, we'll decide tomorrow.' In Mbappe's absence, Alonso has opted to start 21-year-old striker Gonzalo Garcia, who has made just six senior appearances for Madrid, alongside Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo in attack. Last season, Garcia scored 25 league goals for Real Madrid Castilla. Courtois, Trent, Asencio, Huijsen, Garcia, Valverde, Tchouameni, Bellinghham, Rodrygo, Gonzalo, Vinicius Jr Elsewhere for Madrid, their two summer signings, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen, are both included in the starting line-up against Al-Hilal. Meanwhile, Al-Hilal will be without Aleksandar Mitrovic, who misses the game through injury. The former Fulham striker scored 24 goals in all competitions for the Saudi Pro League side last season. More Trending Al-Hilal's match against Madrid will also be the first game in charge for their new head coach Simone Inzaghi, who left Inter two weeks ago having guided them to the Champions League final where they were beaten 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain. 'It's natural that there are a lot of expectations in our first match and we tried to prepare in the best way possible,' Inzaghi said at his press conference on Tuesday. 'It's true that the time wasn't enough, as we only had four training sessions, but the players showed great seriousness and a clear desire to adapt to our new style. 'Al Hilal are a well-established club; they have a group of wonderful players who have exceeded my expectations in terms of their level. We have a great harmony between the local and foreign players. We hope that the fans will support us and appreciate the work we are doing.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. I played for Rangers and PSG under one infamous Ibrox boss and now I am managing a team in France's seventh tier
Jeremy Clement spent a season with Gers in 2006/07 after arriving from Lyon in a £1million deal Paul Le Guen's ill-fated six month stint as manager of Rangers is one that fans of an Ibrox persuasion have tried hard to erase from their memory over the years. And as it turned out, one of the players that the Frenchman brought with him from Ligue 1 didn't last much longer. After taking up the reins in Govan from Alex McLeish in the summer of 2006, the infamous boss moved quickly to sign Jeremy Clement in a £1milion deal. The midfielder was a part of Le Guen's Lyon side that romped to the league title in 2005, the fourth of seven consecutive Ligue 1 crowns won by the club before rivals Marseille and now Pars-Saint-Germain established themselves as the most dominant force in France. However, much like his manager, Clement's spell in Glasgow was far from successful. The playmaker started the majority of his 23 appearances for the Light Blues but was sent packing back to France for £1.8m in the following January, linking up with Le Guen for a third time at PSG just weeks after he had been given the boot at Ibrox. Clement went on to win more silverware in the French capital, helping the club capture the now-defunct Coupe de la Ligue in 2008. After spells with Saint Etienne, AS Nancy Lorraine and minnows FC Bourgoin-Jallieu, the 40-year-old hung up his boots in 2020 to pursue a career as a manager with the latter. Clement held the role for two years before it was mutually decided not to renew his contract at the end of the 2021/22 season. But nearly three years on, the Gers flop is back in coaching after landing the job at amateur club FC Allobroges-Asafia in France's SEVENTH tier. Clement's experiences in the dugout next season will be a world away from some of the big nights he had during his playing career at Ibrox, the Parc des Princes and Parc Olympique Lyonnais. Speaking about his brief Rangers tenure back in 2020, the ex midfielder said: "I wanted to progress as a player so I decided to leave Lyon. "I had opportunities to sign for clubs in France, but I wanted to sign for a manager who knew what I could do, like Paul Le Guen, so I chose Rangers. "Rangers was a great adventure for me. It was my first experience abroad and a big change for me. "The country was beautiful, I met my future wife and Rangers are a legendary club, so I regard it as a great time for me. "I returned to France and went on to play for PSG, St Etienne and Nancy. I've had a great career. "Now I will take my coaching badges at Bourgoin-Jallieu and hope to become a manager one day when football returns to normal."

Myles Lewis-Skelly set to sign lucrative new Arsenal deal after superb season
Arsenal left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly has impressed many during his incredible breakthrough season at the Emirates and now the teenager is set to be rewarded with a bumper new contract Arsenal starlet Myles Lewis-Skelly is reportedly close to signing a lucrative new deal at the Emirates after his superb breakthrough season. The left-back was one of the team's brightest stars in the 2024-25 season after being handed an opportunity to impress and he made the position his own after some impressive performances. Those displays led to a first England call-up from boss Thomas Tuchel and he scored on his debut in a 2-0 win over Albania in March. Now the Gunners want to reward the player for his sensational rise with a 'substantial' pay rise, which will make him one of the best-paid youngsters in the game, according to the Athletic. His boss Mikel Arteta is said to have been key in the new contract talks, with his mother Marcia Lewis negotiating the deal on behalf of her son. Now that Lewis-Skelly has turned 18, he is able to sign a long-term deal. He previously signed professional terms after becoming 17 in 2023 but could not sign a contract longer than three years at that time, meaning his current deal will end next summer. The teenager's debut for Arsenal came during the 2-2 draw against Manchester City in September and he earned huge plaudits for his solid defensive display despite never previously featuring for the senior side. He would go on to play a total of 39 times for the first team as he started 15 games in the Premier League and seven in the Champions League. There have even been stunning reports that Real Madrid are keeping tabs on the player, but any new deal should put those stories to bed. Earlier this season, Lewis-Skelly made it clear how much he admires manager Arteta, indicating his happiness at his boyhood club - calling him a "genius". "His attention to detail is incredible," he told Sky Sports in April. "I love to learn so learning from him and the way he handles and approaches the games, it's fascinating. There's so much I can take from him. He's a genius really." In turn, Arteta has been complimentary about the teenage talent and insisted his England call-up was a direct result of hard work. He said in March: "In six-seven months, your career can change dramatically for the good, so it's something for people to be inspired by. It hasn't happened because he was lucky. He pushed for every chance to happen."
