How SA businesses can prosper in a challenging environment
In the past five years we have weathered not only global crises affecting business operations and viability — from the Covid-19 pandemic to extreme weather events in distant countries affecting worldwide supply chains, to the current US tariff hikes upending the global trading system (the latter certainly not yet weathered) — but also disruptive events locally, notably the 2021 riots in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, and the extreme flooding in Durban in April 2022.
In addition, SA businesses have to keep finding ways to adapt and survive in a highly uncertain operating environment of political instability, uncoordinated and dense bureaucracy, crumbling infrastructure, logistics inefficiencies, municipal service delivery failure and rising crime and corruption; along with a policy environment which is often ambiguous, lagging behind or unsupportive of the current needs of industry and investors.
Dealing with this excessive load of uncertainty and risk has made us very capable of operating in a crisis and surviving, but the problem is that this has also put local business on an insular and defensive path with too much short-term focus — in fixating on avoiding potholes, we are not thinking about how best to get to the end destination, so to speak.
Add to that an increasing regulatory burden of compliance requirements which meet, or exceed, those of first-world countries, across the spectrum of environmental, social and governance (ESG), health and safety, employment and labour, financial reporting and disclosures, customer verification, personal data protection, access to information, as well as Broad-Based Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE).
The result is that local businesses find themselves having to operate to first-world standards in a third-world environment, and resources which should be going into driving innovation and growth are going into ticking compliance boxes.
In some instances, local businesses are even going beyond some of the standards which first-world countries hold themselves to.
It's cold comfort that though we have had more than our fair share of crises, and live with more than our fair share of risks and regulatory headaches, SA business is not alone in rising levels of risk-aversion which are holding back the calculated risk-taking needed to innovate, grow and stay competitive.
According to the 2025 Global Risk Landscape report by international accounting and business advisory firm BDO, which surveyed 500 senior executives in large companies (more than 500 employees, at least $100m' annual revenue) across a range of industries and countries, a global state of 'permacrisis' is making companies excessively cautious.
Businesses are caught between the fear of risk and knowing that in risk lies opportunity.
A record 84% of CEOs and senior executives agreed that the global business risk landscape is defined by crisis, now more than ever; but at the same time, those who say their company's approach to risk management is 'very proactive' has plummeted from 29% to just 7% in the last two years.
As an indicator of caution over taking risks to embrace opportunities for growth, the percentage of companies which are risk-averse or actively risk-minimising rose sharply to 69% in 2025, compared with 61% last year.
Though a timid 'wait-and-see' approach is understandable, the reality is that we are operating in an environment of constant change and new risks.
In order not to stagnate, business cannot wait for the turbulence to subside before making decisions — we need to accept it and plan for it.
For SA business, a survivalist focus over offensive strategy has led to us being overtaken by global competitors not facing the same level of uncertainty that we do.
As a means of managing risk, compliance needs to move beyond box-ticking and be seen as a business tool — it should be the minimum of what we do, not the extent of what we do.
Compliance has become an expensive exercise, and if high levels of compliance are not going to gain new business then that cost becomes a hindrance rather than an enabler of growth.
A solution lies in integrating compliance and risk management functions, and more closely linking risk management strategies to growth-focused business strategies so that compliance becomes a tool towards achieving targets and business goals.
Rather than seeing compliance to first-world standards as a hindrance, or something to just tick boxes on, we can leverage this as a competitive advantage in global markets.
Rather than being box-ticking exercises, SA's robust financial and governance regulations provide confidence and transparency for investors; our stringent environmental legislation and active commitments of local business to corporate social responsibility meet the ethical concerns of first-world consumers.
The message is not to disregard the rules nor to take risks blindly, but to move from being defensive to being proactive — evaluate opportunities against business strategy, think through scenarios of what could go wrong, and weigh up the costs and risks of taking an opportunity versus not taking it.
Decide if you can afford the worst case, and then plan for it.
At the same time we must keep innovation at the forefront of what we do, if we are to have any chance of navigating and leapfrogging through the current challenging environment to a reinvented local economic future.
Running away from risk can also mean running away from opportunity to grow.

PSA proposes steps for government to take to tackle unemployment crisis
South Africa's rising unemployment is a crisis that demands co-ordinated, bold and inclusive action. The Public Servants' Association (PSA) made this comment after the latest unemployment figures released by Stats SA this week showed a rise in the official unemployment rate to 33.2% in the second quarter of 2025, up from 32.9% in the previous quarter. This marked the third consecutive quarterly increase and brought the total number of unemployed South Africans to 8.4-million. 'This situation underscores the persistent structural challenges facing the country's labour market,' the PSA said. It said while employment gains were recorded in sectors such as construction, mining and private households, these were overshadowed by significant job losses in finance, agriculture, community and social services, and transport. 'The PSA is particularly alarmed by the decline in employment in the financial services sector, traditionally a key driver of economic growth and job creation.' The union noted the disturbing statistics regarding youth unemployment and the 'not in employment, education or training (NEET)' rate, which remained above 43% for people aged 15-34. 'This reflects a growing disengagement of young people from the labour market and education system, posing long-term risks to social stability and economic development.' The union urged the government to accelerate labour-intensive public infrastructure projects to absorb unemployed youth and low-skilled workers. Support was also required for small and medium enterprises through targeted funding and regulatory reform to stimulate job creation. 'It is critical to strengthen vocational training and skills development programmes, particularly in rural and underserved communities.' There was also a need to ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation of employment stimulus packages. 'The PSA calls on Stats SA to expedite its planned revisions to the labour force survey methodology to better capture informal-sector employment. Why partnerships will power South African green energy transition

In 2023, the country endured Because of that crisis, something shifted. Companies stopped waiting for government fixes and began generating their own power — first with diesel generators, then increasingly with rooftop solar and battery systems. Retailers installed solar arrays on shopping centres, mines commissioned utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) plants, and agri-processors rolled out biomass solutions to keep operations running. Developers entered the market with energy-as-a-service packages. Banks stepped in with structured financing and insurers began offering products to support embedded generation. These once-fringe decentralised investments became mainstream and helped catalyse policy reforms that opened the grid to private players. By 2024, South Africa had started to turn the corner on its power crisis. Load-shedding had eased significantly, private generation was expanding fast and the daily reliance on apps such as EskomSePush was finally beginning to fade. With more consistent electricity supply came a cautious return of economic confidence. But this isn't just about patching up a broken system, it's about building a resilient energy future. And at the heart of that shift are partnerships — between the government and business, between aggregators and offtakers and between Eskom and private developers. Aggregators in particular are playing a critical role, sourcing power from multiple independent producers and selling it on to large consumers such as mines and manufacturers through Eskom's grid. These collaborations are no longer a 'nice to have' — they are powering the next phase of South Africa's just energy transition. The momentum is backed by real data. Eskom's energy availability factor improved from 55% in 2023 to 60% in 2024, helping reduce load-shedding hours by 76%. Diesel usage dropped by nearly 50%, and rooftop solar capacity more than tripled in just two years. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research says South Africa now has nearly A strong investment case is emerging. In April this year, Eskom's average electricity tariff rose to 195.93 per kilowatt hour — more than triple the 50-60c/kWh cost of new solar and wind projects. This cost gap has turned renewables into the economically obvious choice, not just the environmentally responsible one. Financiers have taken note. Development finance institutions and commercial banks are backing blended finance models that combine concessional capital with commercial loans to reduce project risk and unlock scale. A notable example: the European Investment Bank and the Development Bank of South Africa's South Africa's energy mix is now But deeper trade relationships and long-term industrial strategy are needed. Much of the equipment powering this boom is imported. Last year alone, South Africa imported more than 3.8GW of solar panels and related components. That volume highlights both the depth of current demand and the untapped opportunity to manufacture key parts of the green energy value chain locally. The department of trade, industry and competition is now developing new incentive schemes to catalyse domestic manufacturing of inverters, batteries, electrolysers and more. If the country can align trade policy with investment and technology transfer, it could become a serious player in solar and green hydrogen production across Africa. South Africa is also positioning itself to export green energy regionally. Its installed capacity and wheeling infrastructure give it a potential edge as a regional energy hub, helping stabilise neighbouring grids and supporting industrial growth across the Southern African Development Community. Cross-border wheeling frameworks and regulatory alignment are already in discussion, signalling intent to unlock long-term opportunity beyond the national grid. These talks are essential for regional energy integration and to build new markets for surplus renewable power. Equally important is ensuring that the transition is just. Communities that rely on coal must see meaningful alternatives: jobs, retraining and local procurement. The Presidential Climate Commission and National Planning Commission are working with municipalities in coal-heavy regions to plan how renewables can be a vehicle for inclusion and opportunity — not displacement. If the green transition doesn't improve livelihoods where it matters most, it risks deepening inequality rather than addressing it. None of this will be easy. Grid investment remains urgent. Regulatory clarity on wheeling and storage still lags. And many communities still feel left out of the energy conversation. But the foundations are in place, and momentum is real. Rooftop solar is becoming mainstream. Wheeling deals are accelerating. Eskom is stabilising. And international capital is flowing. Tata Motors to relaunch passenger vehicles in South Africa
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV), a subsidiary of Indian carmaker Tata Motors, will re-enter the South African market through a new distribution agreement with Motus Holdings. The company, which sells a range of models in its home market, from compact hatchbacks to SUVs, said on Wednesday that its local line-up will feature segment-leading safety, modern design and competitive pricing. 'South Africa is an important market in our global expansion journey,' said Yash Khandelwal, head international business, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. 'With our class-leading products and a reputed partner in Motus, we are here to offer South African customers a choice of vehicles that are safe, stylish and innovation-driven. We will deliver a distinctive and future-ready mobility experience, backed by attractive pricing, competitive financing and industry-leading aftersales support.' TMPV said its South African range will include SUVs, crossovers and entry-level hatchbacks. All its current passenger models in India have four- or five-star New Car Assessment Programme safety ratings, either from Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP.
