China's ‘AI tigers' Zhipu, Moonshot accused of collecting excessive data with chatbot apps

Some of China's most popular
artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot apps, made by leading developers including Zhipu AI and Moonshot AI, had been collecting excessive user information, authorities found.
Zhipu's Qingyan, also known as ChatGLM, was found to have collected information beyond what users authorised, while Moonshot's Kimi had accessed data irrelevant to its functions, according to a list published on the WeChat account of the National Cyber Security Information Centre on Tuesday.
Neither Zhipu nor Moonshot, start-ups that are both based in Beijing, immediately responded to requests for comment on Wednesday.
Their chatbots are among the most competitive alternatives to OpenAI's ChatGPT, which is
officially unavailable in China

ChatGLM and Kimi ranked among the 10 most popular AI applications in the country, boasting a combined total of nearly 35 million monthly active users as of April, according to Aicpb.com, which tracks the popularity of AI apps and services

Armed with late-night study sessions and a discarded academic career, Zhou's breakthrough may have transformed the ABC conjecture from conceptual abstraction to computationally usable tool. The feat, achieved during weekends between gruelling 14-hour shifts as a Beijing algorithm engineer, not only revives Mochizuki's controversial theory but threatens to eclipse Andrew Wiles' famed 1995 proof of Fermat's Last Theorem in scope. 'His results are infinitely stronger than Wiles,' declared Professor Ivan Fesenko, a leading IUT authority who now mentors Zhou at Westlake University. Canton United, an amateur team playing in mainland China's fourth tier, have announced the signing of former AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain forward Jeremy Menez, as they attempt to join the Hong Kong Premier League. Advertisement The club, who are based in Guangzhou, wrote on Weibo that they had signed the former French international, who retired last September. Menez, 38, has not commented publicly on the move, but Canton said he would join in July. The Post has contacted Menez for comment. 'We are pleased to announce that after consultation with the management team of French star Jeremy Menez, Menez will join Canton United Football Club in July 2025, wearing the No 77 jersey and competing for the team in related competitions,' the Weibo post said. 'Menez's experience in the top European leagues, mature tactical qualities and leadership qualities will inject new vitality into Canton United.' On May 24, Canton, who play in the Chinese Football Association Member Association Champions League, shared an official statement outlining their ambition to join the Hong Kong Premier League.

China's top humanoid robot start-up Unitree Robotics has converted into a company limited by shares, a move that has fanned speculation around its public listing plans, as Chinese robotics firms rapidly expand amid the country's fervour for the artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled machines. Advertisement Unitree has changed from a limited liability company into a joint stock limited company, an equivalent to a company limited by shares, according to records on Chinese corporate database Qichacha published on Thursday. In a letter to business partners, the company said the move was 'due to company development needs', according to a report by the state-run Chinese news outlet Securities Times. Chinese media outlets have called Unitree's restructuring a move that paved the way for its initial public offering. Hangzhou-based Unitree did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
