BEIJING : Starbucks China will lower the prices of some of its iced drinks by an average of ¥5 (US$0.70) across the country, the company announced today, as competition intensifies and consumers become more cautious about spending.
In a post on its Weixin social media account, the US coffee chain said it would offer more 'accessible' prices on dozens of its drinks, including non-coffee drinks and the Frappuccino, from tomorrow.
While China is Starbucks' second-largest market after the US, the coffee market is highly competitive, and consumers have become more cautious about spending because of the slowing economy and concerns about job security.
The new approach means some of Starbucks' drinks will be priced as low as ¥23, the post said.
Domestic rivals such as Luckin Coffee and Cotti have priced their drinks as low as ¥9.9 or even ¥8.8, while deep-pocketed internet companies JD.com and Alibaba Group have entered the food delivery market, adding to the competition.
With offers and vouchers, Chinese coffee consumers can buy themselves a drink for as little as ¥2.9.
A person close to Starbucks, said the company was not reducing prices in response to intense price competition, but looking to attract more customers in the afternoon.
The individual requested anonymity as they were not in a role that allowed them to comment to the media.
'Starbucks likely has a longer-term strategy, which is to focus on the demand for non-coffee items in the afternoon among consumers,' the source said.
Starbucks had said previously that it would not engage in a price war.
However, it has also introduced smaller-sized drinks and issued coupons which have lowered prices for customers.
The US giant has also been looking to revive its business in China via selling stakes in the business.

Dollar slips after rally, focus shifts to US-China trade talks

WASHINGTON: The dollar eased against all major currencies on Monday, as exuberance over a better than feared US employment report gave way to caution ahead of pivotal US-China trade talks set to take place later in the day. Top officials from both countries will meet in London to address disagreements around a preliminary agreement struck last month in Geneva, which had briefly cooled tensions between the world's largest economies. The talks come at a crucial time for both sides, with China grappling with deflation and trade uncertainty dampening sentiment among US businesses and consumers, prompting investors to reassess the dollar's safe-haven status. "How the trade talks go definitely is going to be critical for overall sentiment," said Kit Juckes, chief FX strategist at Societe Generale. He said Asia Pacific currencies including the Japanese yen and Australian and New Zealand dollars would likely see the biggest reaction to headlines from the talks. The dollar declined 0.46 per cent against the Japanese currency , trading at 144.16 yen after two consecutive weeks of gains. Japan is considering buying back some super-long government bonds issued in the past at low interest rates, two sources with direct knowledge of the plan said on Monday, underscoring its focus on reining in any abrupt rises in bond yields. The euro rose 0.2 per cent and was last at US$1.1418 as markets continued to price in the European Central Bank's monetary policy outlook issued last week, in which it indicated it may be close to ending its easing cycle, while sterling rose 0.3 per cent to US$1.3558. Elsewhere, China's offshore yuan was last at 7.18 per dollar after data showed export growth slowed to a three-month low in May, while factory-gate deflation deepened to its worst level in two years. New Zealand's dollar rose 0.6 per cent to US$0.60555, while the Australian dollar was last up by half a percentage point at US$0.6524 in light volumes as markets were closed for a public holiday. In Australia, a much healthier fiscal position than the US, attractive yields and a "not too bad" economy should support the Aussie unless there are negative headlines from the talks, Juckes said. Also on the trade front was a report that said Japan's chief trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa is planning a sixth round of talks in Washington. An inflation report out of the US for the month of May will be in the spotlight later in the week as investors and Federal Reserve policymakers look for evidence on the damage trade restrictive policies have had on the economy. Fed officials have signalled that they are in no rush to cut interest rates and signs of better-than-feared economic resilience are likely to further cement their stance. Interest rate futures indicate that investors are anticipating the central bank may cut borrowing costs by 25 basis points, with the earliest move expected in October this year, according to data compiled by LSEG. "May is the first month where the impact of Trump's 10 per cent universal tariff on imports ex-USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) is expected to show.

China's new energy, auto firms invited to invest in Sabah

Frankie Liew (fourth from right), Wilfred Madius Tangau (fourth from left), Peter Chia (third from left) and Tan Siew Ling (third from right) attending the RCEP Dialogue Conference. KOTA KINABALU (June 9): China's new energy and automotive companies have been invited to invest in Sabah and establish manufacturing plants and regional hubs to tap into the growing ASEAN market. The invitation was extended by Sabah China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) President Datuk Frankie Liew during the inauguration ceremony of the China–ASEAN New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Industry Cooperation Council in Hefei, Anhui, China. Liew emphasized Sabah's unique geographic position and favorable policy environment, positioning it as a potential green industrial hub that links China, ASEAN, and the global market. 'Malaysia is undergoing a critical energy transition, with gradual fuel subsidy reforms making traditional fuel vehicle operations more expensive. This creates a conducive environment for the development of NEVs,' he said. Highlighting Sabah's abundant solar resources and national-level strategies to promote electric vehicles, build charging infrastructure, and upgrade the power grid, Liew said these factors lay a strong foundation for NEV industry growth. 'Sabah's strategic location in Southeast Asia, its young population, and high receptiveness to new technologies provide a solid market base and significant growth potential for the NEV industry,' he added. Liew also outlined SCCC's proactive efforts in fostering China–Malaysia economic cooperation and reiterated the chamber's commitment to facilitating Chinese investment in Sabah. He proposed the joint establishment of a China–ASEAN New Energy Industry Community of Shared Future. He stressed that participating in the China–ASEAN NEV Industry Cooperation Council offers a rare opportunity for meaningful exchange and collaboration. 'The SCCC will continue to act as a bridge between governments and enterprises, supporting Sabah businesses in expanding overseas while providing comprehensive assistance to Chinese companies entering Sabah and the ASEAN market,' he said. Liew affirmed SCCC's dedication to promoting mutually beneficial partnerships and expressed confidence in the prospects of new energy collaboration between China and ASEAN. He was joined at the event by SCCC Vice President and Women Entrepreneurs Committee chairperson Tan Siew Ling, and committee member Datuk Peter Chia. The SCCC delegation also participated in the RCEP Member States Dialogue on Cooperation in NEVs and Advanced Photovoltaic Industry Chains, with Sabah Electricity chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau, held from June 3–5 in Hefei. During the conference, the Hefei Initiative on Cooperation in NEV and Advanced PV Industry Chains among RCEP Member States was released. It urged participants to leverage their respective strengths and deepen industrial collaboration in NEVs, photovoltaics, and energy storage — aiming to build a complementary, collaborative ecosystem and expand international markets for mutual benefit. Xu Ningning, chairman of the RCEP Industrial Cooperation Committee, emphasized the role of cooperation mechanisms in boosting trade and investment, calling for their active establishment to enhance structured collaboration. Edmund Araga, president of both the Asian Federation of Electric Vehicle Associations and the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines, noted that China's expertise combined with ASEAN's dynamic market can foster a regional EV ecosystem and make electric vehicles mainstream. Several key initiatives were also launched at the event: Official inauguration of the overseas liaison offices of the Hefei Chamber of International Commerce in Malaysia and Cambodia. Launch of a municipal-level overseas economic and trade cooperation zone in Cambodia. Signing of multiple RCEP-related MoUs and cooperation projects. Release of the Hefei Cooperation Needs List outlining 47 cooperation demands in capacity investment, raw materials, and talent exchange for NEVs, photovoltaics, and energy storage. Launch of Hefei's unified 'Five Foreign Synergies' digital portal, covering foreign trade, investment, outsourcing, economy, and talent.
