Safety scare: IndiGo plane's tail strikes runway while go-around during landing at Mumbai amid incessant rains
'On August 16, 2025 an IndiGo Airbus A321 aircraft tail touched the runway while executing a low-altitude go-around due to unfavourable weather conditions in Mumbai. Following the standard protocol, the aircraft will go through necessary checks/ repairs and regulatory clearance before resuming operations," said an IndiGo spokesperson.
In a go-around, an aircraft initiates a climb away from the runway instead of continuing its approach to land.
Mumbai woke up to relentless rain on Saturday, with several areas recording over 200 mm of rainfall in just a few hours. The downpour flooded low-lying pockets and threw local train services off track.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert, warning of heavy to very heavy showers across the metropolis over the next two days.

The aircraft then circled back and landed safely on its second attempt. The airline reiterated that safety is its top priority and confirmed that all passengers and crew members were safe. Just Days Earlier On Thursday, IndiGo cancelled flight 6E-360 from Delhi to Darbhanga after weather-related delays in the capital made it impossible to land within Darbhanga airport's limited operating hours. According to sources, the flight was originally scheduled to leave earlier in the day but was held back due to bad weather in Delhi. Since Darbhanga airport operates within specific time limits for runway use, the airline had no choice but to cancel the flight. Passengers were deboarded at Delhi Airport, though a small group briefly staged a protest on the tarmac. He may decide to make a second attempt for various reasons, for the safety of the passengers and there is nothing to worry about," the company source said. The plane landed safely at LGBI Airport in Guwahati on the second attempt, the source added. An airport official said that IndiGo's flight 6E-187 was coming from Dibrugarh to Guwahati. The flight has already proceeded on its onward journey after completing its necessary formalities, the official added. On Saturday, about 15 flights bound for Mumbai had to execute go-arounds due to unfavourable weather. Over 350 flights were delayed and two were diverted. An IndiGo Airbus A321 aircraft's tail also touched the runway at Mumbai Airport during a low-altitude go-around.
