Vijay Rupani among Air India plane crash victims, confirms DNA match: Gujarat Home Minister
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 15 (ANI): Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Sunday said that former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among those who died in the tragic Air India flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad. His identity was confirmed through DNA matching.
Rupani was one of the 241 passengers who lost their lives after the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into the BJ Medical College hostel shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12.
'Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani lost his life during the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. Today, at around 11:10 AM, his DNA has been matched. He worked for the people of Gujarat for several years. The mortal remains of Rupani will be handed over to his family, and the authorities will decide on the final rites,' Sanghavi said.
Union Minister Nimuben Bambhaniya expressed her condolences, saying, 'The plane accident that happened in Ahmedabad is truly sad. Former CM Vijay Rupani died in that accident. He knew every BJP worker very well. We won't be able to fill his void of work. Every worker has tears in their eyes.'
Earlier, Sanghavi also shared details about the overall identification efforts. 'Update as of 1.00 pm- From 9 PM last night to 1 PM today, our teams have worked tirelessly to match DNA samples. We are pleased to report that an additional 22 DNA samples have been matched, bringing the total to 42 matched DNA samples so far,' Sanghavi wrote in a post on X today.
'Ongoing Efforts: State Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit team and National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) team are working through the night to match more DNA samples,' he added.
Earlier, FSL Director HP Sanghavi stated that DNA testing was essential for victim identification due to the extreme heat from the crash and subsequent fire, which rendered the traditional methods ineffective.
On Saturday, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital's Additional Medical Superintendent Dr Rajnish Patel said, 'So far, 31 victims have been identified through DNA matching. Twelve bodies have been handed over to their respective family members. We are waiting for others to come and collect the remains of their relatives.'
Air India, in a post on X, announced an interim financial assistance package of Rs 25 lakh (approximately GBP 21,000) for the 'families of the deceased and to the survivor' of the tragic crash.
In a post on X, the Tata-owned airline stated that the package was in addition to the Rs 1 crore support already announced by Tata Sons.
The crash claimed 241 lives out of the 242 people onboard, which included 230 passengers and 12 crew members. The lone survivor, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries. (ANI)

Formula E Race case: KTR to face second round of ACB questioning today
Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao is set to appear before the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday morning for a second round of questioning in connection with alleged financial irregularities related to the Formula E race in Hyderabad. KTR is accused of the illegal release of funds to the London-based company Formula E Operations (FEO), which was tasked with organising the race. The ACB served notices to KTR on June 13. At that point, KTR, then the minister for municipal administration and urban development (MAUD), allegedly instructed senior officials in his department to ensure HMDA bore the cost of the second edition. ACB officials say the payment was made without following due process, and despite the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). After the Congress govt came to power, it cancelled the planned second edition of the race and ordered an ACB probe into the matter. ACB has already questioned officials from the MAUD department, including former principal secretary Arvind Kumar, and representatives from Ace Nxt Gen and FEO.

Bengaluru businessman robbed ofgold, suspects pal's role
Bengaluru: A businessman has filed a police complaint alleging he was robbed of gold ornaments worth Rs 3 lakh by scooter-borne miscreants, in what he now believes was a planned setup involving his friend. The incident occurred in the early hours of May 1, shortly after a pub outing at Yelahanka, and the complaint was lodged with Chikkajala police a week later. Chandan P, 23, a resident of Shivshakti Nagar, accused his longtime friend Achal Nana and others of being involved in the case. Chandan stated that Achal, who owns a café at JP Nagar, invited him for a get-together and insisted they go for a long drive. Around 9:45pm, Achal picked up Chandan and another friend Pavan in his SUV. According to the complaint, the trio visited a bar and restaurant during the drive and had food and drinks. Chandan noted that Achal frequently stepped out to take phone calls. On their way back around 1:30am, Achal stopped the vehicle abruptly, claiming someone had hit it from behind. At the moment, two scooter-borne men appeared and attacked Chandan. They allegedly held him at knifepoint and robbed him of a 40-gram gold chain, a 20-gram bracelet, and a 9-gram ring. Chandan said he pleaded with Achal and Pavan to pursue the robbers, but they discouraged him, stating they feared the miscreants might be members of a larger gang. Achal even advised Chandan not to report the incident to police. Chandan later grew suspicious and filed a complaint on May 7. Based on preliminary investigations, police suspect Achal might have orchestrated the robbery to make up for financial losses from his café business. Call detail records reportedly support this claim. Chikkajala police have registered a case under Section 308 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (extortion) and are searching for Achal and his friends.

Bodies of 38 victims handed to kin, Vijay Rupani among those IDed

Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was among those identified through DNA testing, state health minister Rushikesh Patel said. Rupani's son Rishabh provided a blood sample on Saturday. The government has declared a state mourning on Monday, with the tricolour at half-staff. Rupani's last rites will be conducted with state honours in Rajkot. Teams of doctors and forensic experts continued 24/7 DNA matching of bodies and body parts with samples from relatives. DNA from 86 passengers and crew matched by 6 pm Sunday, officials said. "All 230 families of passengers aboard have been contacted," said state relief commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey. "Relatives of three foreigners are expected to arrive by Monday evening or Tuesday morning. We're coordinating inquest reports, death certificates, and other formalities at the hospital."
