Egypt national team arrive in Cape Verde ahead of AFCON qualifier - National Teams

Al-Ahram Weekly14-11-2024
The Egyptian national football team arrived in Cape Verde on Thursday, concluding a 10-hour journey ahead of their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match on Friday evening.
The Pharaohs, led by coach Hossam Hassan and assured of a place in the upcoming AFCON finals, will take on Cape Verde in the fifth round of qualifiers.
Egypt clinched qualification for the 2025 AFCON tournament, which will take place in Morocco, after an impressive showing in the earlier rounds. They earned maximum points in their first four matches.
However, key players Omar Marmoush, Mahmoud 'Trezeguet' Hassan, and Marwan Attia will not participate, as the coaching staff opted to rest them.
Both Trezeguet, who currently plays for Qatar's Al-Rayyan, and Ahly's Attia serve suspensions after receiving second yellow cards in the qualifiers. Coach Hassan also granted Marmoush, who represents Germany's Eintracht Frankfurt, a rest.
Friday's match will be held on an artificial turf pitch, marking the team's penultimate qualifier.
The Pharaohs will then conclude their AFCON qualifying campaign on Tuesday against Botswana in the final round.

Overhauled floating hotel Eugenie relaunched in Aswan - Urban & Transport

The Port Said Engineering Works and Shipbuilding Company, a subsidiary of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), announced the relaunch on Wednesday of the floating hotel Eugénie in Aswan after completing extensive maintenance and repairs. The ceremony was attended by the ambassadors of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, alongside senior local officials and security leaders from the governorate. The 72-metre-long, 13-metre-wide vessel, weighing 1,600 tons, underwent a comprehensive overhaul that included the replacement of 30 tons of damaged steel and extensive repairs supervised by the Polish Classification Society. Further works—including electrical and mechanical upgrades, insulation of the engine room, servicing of deck equipment, and repainting of the superstructure—will continue after the vessel's return to the water. In a speech delivered on his behalf, SCA Chairman Admiral Osama Rabie highlighted the authority's progress in upgrading its shipyards and subsidiaries as part of a broader strategy to maximise asset utilisation, diversify revenue streams, and reinforce the SCA's developmental and service roles in line with presidential directives. He noted that the modernisation drive is creating new opportunities to localise marine industries and to position Egypt as a regional hub for vessel maintenance in Africa and the Middle East. In a recorded address, Aswan Governor Major General Dr Ismail Kamal praised the SCA's contribution to development and tourism. He described the expansion of the company's facilities in Aswan as a significant boost for Nile tourism ahead of the upcoming season, in line with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi's directives to promote river tourism. Company Chairman Eng Yasser Nour El-Din said the new expansions represent an essential step in strengthening the company's regional standing. He noted that hotel vessel lifting and launching operations in Aswan are carried out using advanced airbag technology, supervised by Alexandria University's Faculty of Engineering and approved by the River Transport Authority. Mustafa El-Gendy, owner of the Eugénie and Honorary Vice-President of the Pan-African Parliament, thanked the SCA and the company for completing the project on schedule. He also announced plans to begin maintenance on another floating hotel, Kasr Ibrim, and expressed hope for broader cooperation to promote Egyptian shipbuilding and repair services across Africa. This expansion marks the company's first operations behind the High Dam, with its new site on Lake Nasser dedicated to servicing floating hotels and tourist vessels operating between Abu Simbel and Aswan—routes unable to cross the dam. Salah's tribute turns CHAN spotlight into message of hope for Sudan

Published: Wednesday, 20 August 2025 When Salah Eldin Adel Ahmed El Hassan walked off the pitch in Zanzibar after Sudan's goalless draw with Senegal, he was not only carrying the TotalEnergies Man of the Match award — he was carrying the weight of a nation. His performance was more than a midfield masterclass; it was a gesture of pride for a country striving for joy during turbulent times. 'This qualification is for them; we want to make our people happy,' Salah declared, dedicating his award to his family and the Sudanese people. Against defending champions Senegal, Salah anchored the midfield with remarkable precision, completing 90% of his passes and winning five tackles. His composure helped Sudan secure the point that guaranteed their progression to the quarter-finals. 'We entered the match with a plan. Senegal is a great team and the defending champions of the previous edition. We had to defend a lot, and that worked for us,' he explained. Sudan's disciplined approach in this fixture contrasted sharply with their earlier games. After a shaky opening draw and a 4-0 triumph over Nigeria, coach Kwesi Appiah's youthful side adapted their strategy — and Salah's leadership proved decisive. At 30, Salah is no stranger to the CHAN stage. Featuring in his second edition, the Al-Hilal midfielder has already logged 259 minutes in the group stage. His relentless drive underscores the Falcons of Jediane's ambitions. He reflected on the effort of his teammates: 'This qualification is for all the Sudanese people; we want to make our people happy.' Salah's perspective also reached beyond the match. He praised the evolution of the tournament itself, highlighting the improvements in organisation and atmosphere. 'The CHAN tournament has a good feeling; all the officials are working to develop the competition, which is great,' he noted. With the group phase behind them, Sudan now turn to their quarter-final clash against Algeria, coached by Madjid Bougherra, on Saturday the 23rd at Aman Stadium in Zanzibar. Asked about the challenge ahead, Salah remained grounded: 'We are taking the competition step by step.' As the knockout rounds beckon, one truth endures: in moments of pressure, big players step forward. And for Sudan, Salah Eldin Adel Ahmed El Hassan is proving to be more than a midfielder — he is a symbol of belief, carrying the hopes of a nation.
