Neeraj Chopra wins Paris Diamond League with 88.16m throw, defeats Germany's Julian Weber
Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra claimed his first title of 2025 as he won the Paris Diamond League on Friday, June 20 (local time). The Indian Olympic winner once again proved his dominance on the global stage, with a commanding first-round throw of 88.16 metres at the league.
Despite three no-marks in the middle rounds, his opening effort was enough to keep him on top throughout the competition.
Chopra set the tone early, launching the spear 88.16m on his first attempt, immediately taking the lead. Germany's Julian Weber came close with a best of 87.88m but fell short. Brazil's Mauricio Luiz da Silva secured third place with a throw of 86.62m.
In the opening round, Chopra led the field, followed by Weber's 87.88m and Trinidad and Tobago's Keshorn Walcott with 80.94m. In the second round, Weber briefly merged an 86.20m throw, while Neeraj recorded 85.10m and Walcott slightly improved to 81.66m. However, Chopra's opening throw remained unmatched.
The third round saw Da Silva make his mark with a throw of 86.62m.
Weber tried to mount a late challenge with throws of 83.13m in the fourth and 84.50m in the fifth round, but he could not cross the 88m mark. In the final round, Neeraj returned to the sector with a solid 82.89m, while Weber finished with 81.08m and Da Silva with 78.56m.
Despite the inconsistency in the middle of the competition, Chopra's single legal throw in the first round proved decisive and enough to seal the win.
The two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra will be in action for the inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, which will take place on July 5.
The NC Classic was originally slated to be held on May 24 but was later postponed to July 5 due to the cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.

We are working on it in training, but still, there are so many things we have to change and I need some, maybe, strong core and some more strong body for throwing," said Neeraj, 27, after winning the title in a star-studded field that had five throwers from the coveted 90m club. In a sport like javelin, core muscles help in generating and transferring power from the lower body to the upper body, which ultimately impacts the throwing distance and accuracy. Chopra said it is a matter of time before he finds consistency and is able to match the expectations of his fans. "It's just a matter of time and rhythm... getting more and more competitions." The ace athlete said he was happy with his run-up, but when it comes to timing of the throw, he needs to put in some more effort. "...like timing, because I feel really good (in the) run up, but the timing was not so good when I throw (the javelin). I go quickly left and it was not good. I need to throw to the front like with the chest and go up with the javelin. We are working on it," Chopra said. Chopra, who is currently being coached by the legendary javelin thrower Jan Zelezný, said he was looking forward to the Ostrava Golden Spike athletic meet on June 24, and the four days in between will give him time to recover. The Indian has a packed schedule with back-to-back competitions coming up, including the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru on July 5, which is a World Athletics category A event. "I will compete in Ostrava after four days on June 24. So, yes, I need some recovery. I'm very excited with this (Neeraj Chopra Classic) also. It's really something that I feel I did for my country and people are sporting. "Indian people are sporting and they are following javelin (sport) after after the Tokyo Olympics, and I'm very excited. In future, I'm thinking of making this event (Neeraj Chopra Classic) big," he added. The Tokyo Olympic gold medallist added that he would certainly strive for another 90-plus throw in the World Championships scheduled later this year in Tokyo. "I'm expecting like, hoping for again some 90m throw (in world championship) because I broke that barrier in Doha. So now I believe I can do it some more... some far throws. But let's see, it's depend on the weather and good condition, how the body feels, but maybe I will throw far in this season."

Neeraj Chopra beats Germany's Weber to win Paris Diamond League title
Indian javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra won his first Diamond League title in two years as he upstaged Julian Weber of Germany after back-to-back second place finishes here on Friday. The 27-year-old Chopra won the title with his first round throw of 88.16m in a star-studded field having five competitors in the 90m club. His second throw measured 85.10m and he then fouled his next three attempts before recording 82.89m in his sixth and final effort. Weber was second with his opening throw of 87.88m, while Luiz Mauricio Da Silva of Brazil was third with his third round attempt of 86.62m. Chopra had breached the 90m mark in the Doha leg of the Diamond League on May 16 with a throw of 90.23m for a second place finish. Weber had won the title in Doha with his last round throw of 91.06m. The 31-year-old Weber had also beaten Chopra at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial meet on May 23 in Poland where both performed below their best under chilly and overcast conditions. Weber had produced 86.12m while Chopra could only come up 84.14m to finish second. Chopra had won his last DL title in Lausanne in June 2023 with a throw of 87.66m. Since then till Friday, he has finished second in six DL meetings. This was Chopra's first win in the Paris leg of the prestigious DL series. He last competed in the Paris DL in 2017 as a junior world champion and finished fifth with a throw of 84.67m. The two-time Olympic medallist Indian began the 2025 season with a title in an invitational meet at Potchefstroom, South Africa, which was a minor -- category F -- event with a throw of 84.52m. On June 24, Chopra will compete at the Golden Spike athletics meet in Ostrava, Czech Republic. After that, the reigning world champion will feature in the inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic on July 5 in Bengaluru, a World Athletics category A event which he is hosting.
