Volkswagen's upcoming hot hatch, the Golf GTI Edition 50, has made headlines even before its official launch by becoming the fastest road-legal VW to lap Germany's Nrburgring Nordschleife. Professional racing driver Benny Leuchter clocked a lap time of 07:46.13 minutes, making the upcoming special edition GTI the most capable front-wheel-drive Volkswagen on the iconic 20.8-kilometre track.Set to debut globally on June 20, 2025, during the 24-hour race weekend at the Nrburgring, the Golf GTI Edition 50 marks the 50th anniversary of the GTI nameplate, with customer deliveries expected to begin in 2026. Volkswagen says the new model represents the 'pure GTI idea' — a combination of powerful front-wheel drive, precise chassis tuning, and track-honed performance.advertisementA new Nrburgring benchmark

According to Volkswagen, the record-setting GTI was equipped with an optional performance package, featuring a specially developed performance chassis, 19-inch Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres, and lightweight forged wheels. This setup, Leuchter said, was key to the car's ability to handle the Nrburgring's demanding corners, undulating surfaces, and high-speed sections.
'It's truly impressive how easily this Volkswagen can be moved so quickly over the Nordschleife,' said Leuchter. 'The entire set-up allows you to drive the ideal line with high precision. Even in difficult weather, the GTI remained stable across the entire track.'Historic leap in GTI performance
Benny Leuchter clocked a lap time of 07:46.13 minutes.
advertisementThis isn't the first time Leuchter has set records in a GTI. Back in 2016, he lapped the Nrburgring in a Golf GTI Clubsport S (310PS) in 07:49.21 minutes, and in 2022, he set a 07:47.31 record in the all-wheel-drive Golf R 20 Years. However, the Edition 50's lap, which includes the 200 meters between grandstand T13's start and finish lines, is a more holistic measure. Excluding that distance (to match prior laps), the GTI Edition 50's lap is even quicker: 07:41.27 minutes, as seen in the on-board footage.'Three years ago, I wouldn't have thought a front-wheel-drive GTI could beat the Golf R's time so decisively,' said Leuchter. 'That it happened — in less-than-ideal weather — speaks volumes about this car's potential.'A celebration of GTI legacyWhile final specs are yet to be confirmed, the Golf GTI Edition 50 is expected to be the most powerful production GTI to date. It will arrive with exclusive design elements and advanced performance upgrades to celebrate five decades of one of the world's most iconic hot hatches.Until its commercial release in 2026, the Edition 50 will be listed in the "Pre-Series Models" category in the Nrburgring official records.Subscribe to Auto Today Magazine

Mahindra's iconic off-roader heading toward drastic changes

On India's 79th Independence Day, Mahindra signalled a new era for its next-gen cars including the iconic off-roader, the Thar. The next-generation model will break away from its traditional ladder-frame underpinnings and shift to a modern monocoque chassis based on the company's new NU_IQ modular NU_IQ platform, revealed alongside four striking SUV concepts, which includes the Vision.S, Vision.T, and Vision.X, forms the foundation of Mahindra's 'Vision 2027' roadmap. advertisementThe new platform has been engineered as a multi-energy, multi-top-hat architecture designed to accommodate internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid, and electric powertrains, while offering both front- and all-wheel-drive capabilities across left- and right-hand drive markets. Mahindra says NU_IQ SUVs will deliver class-leading driving dynamics, spacious flat-floor interiors, cutting-edge safety, and next-generation connected technologies. This shift is expected to catapult the Thar from its rugged, off-road-dedicated roots into a more versatile, global-ready lifestyle SUV without losing its adventurous DNA. Since the Mahindra's new NU_IQ platform is a modular platform, meaning ICE, hybrid and electric can be accomodated, the Thar in the future will likely come in ICE and EV options.R. Velusamy, President, Automotive Business, Mahindra, said, 'NU_IQ is a strategic blueprint for the future of Mahindra SUVs globally. With its modular, multi-energy architecture, it resolves paradoxes and gives us the freedom to innovate across powertrains and top hats while staying true to our SUV DNA.'The move also marks the evolution of Mahindra's HEARTCORE design philosophy, developed jointly at its design studios in Mumbai and Banbury, UK. Chief Design and Creative Officer Pratap Bose described the new language as based on the theme 'Opposites Attract', promising expressive yet functional designs that inspire confidence and connection across terrains. The next-generation Thar, alongside the other NU_IQ SUVs, will enter production from 2027, targeting both Indian and international markets. While purists may debate the shift from body-on-frame ruggedness to monocoque sophistication, Mahindra is positioning the new Thar as a world-beating, no-compromise SUV that blends toughness with this radical transformation, the Thar is set to move from being just an off-road icon to a global lifestyle SUV, marking one of the most dramatic shifts in its legendary to Auto Today Magazine- EndsTune InTrending Reel

Volkswagen wants drivers to pay fees to unlock horsepower already built into cars

Automakers have been finding new ways of generating revenue. With the increased penetration of digitalisation and telematics in modern vehicles, this trend is growing. Volkswagen has opted for this strategy in the UK. The German auto giant is selling the Volkswagen ID.3 Pure in the UK market, where the company is charging an extra fee to the customers to unlock more horsepower that is already built into the cars. The entry-level Volkswagen ID.3 Pure models are listed as having 165 bhp peak power on Volkswagen's configurator, but actually have just 145 bhp. In order to use the full power output of the vehicle, the customers have to pay an extra fee. In a nutshell, Volkswagen is charging customers more to give their cars the power they already have. Also, despite this small boost, the OEM says the overall range of the ID.3 will not change. The customers of the Volkswagen ID.3 Pure EV in the UK will have to shell out an additional $22.50 per month for this power output unlocking. The customers can skip the monthly hassle and opt for a one-time lifetime payment of $878, which is actually a lot of cash for a modest performance bump. Volkswagen defends additional chargers Volkswagen has compared this strategy to traditional engine lineups, where the same displacement could be offered in multiple states of tune at different price points. 'Offering more power to customers is nothing new… These traditionally are higher up in the product range, with more specifications and a higher list price. If customers wish to have an even sportier driving experience, they now have an option to do so, within the life of the vehicle, rather than committing from the outset with a higher initial purchase price. The car is presented on the configurator with [201bhp], with the option made very clear to customers," the company has stated to AutoExpress. Check out Upcoming EV Cars in India.
