Trump admits why he's 'not happy' after long call with Putin to discuss Ukraine peace deal

Daily Mail8 hours ago
President Donald Trump said Thursday that no progress was made in ending the war with Ukraine after he conducted another lengthy call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump spoke to reporters at Joint Base Andrews ahead of a trip to Des Moines, Iowa.
He was taking a victory lap after the GOP-controlled Congress passed the so-called 'Big Beautiful Bill,' before Trump's Fourth of July deadline - his biggest domestic achievement thus far.
But he voiced frustration with world affairs when asked about Putin.
'We had a call. It was a pretty long call. We talked about a lot of things including Iran and we also talked about, as you know, the war with Ukraine,' Trump said.
'And I'm not happy about that,' he said.
Trump was then asked if he made progress with Putin on a peace deal with Ukraine.
'No, I didn't make any progress with him today at all,' the president scoffed.
Trump also pushed back when a journalist asked why the U.S. paused weapons shipments to Ukraine.
'We haven't,' Trump insisted. 'We're giving weapons.'
He then said that, 'Biden emptied out our whole country giving them weapons and we have to make sure that we have enough for ourselves.'
On Monday the Pentagon halted some weapons shipments to Ukraine - with the White House pushing back on some reporting that suggested that the move was made without coordination with the State Department.
The move worried Trump critics who fear the president isn't fully onboard helping Ukraine fight the Russians.
The president left the G7 last month before a planned sit-down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky due to Israel and Iran's fighting in the Middle East.
He did get together with Zelensky, without cameras present, during last week's NATO Summit in the Hague.
A back-and-forth between Trump and a Ukrainian BBC journalist whose husband was fighting in the war went viral.
'Wow. That's rough stuff, right? That's tough,' the president told her. 'Let me just tell you, they do want to have the anti-missile missiles, as they call them, the Patriots. And we're going to see if we can make some available,' he said.
On Thursday morning, Trump spoke with Putin for more than an hour, with the White House saying the two leaders discussed the war in Ukraine and Iran.
Trump announced on his Truth Social account just 20 minutes beforehand that he was hopping on the phone with his Russian counterpart.
The Kremlin released a readout of the call before the White House and claimed that the Russian president recommitted to its interest in negotiating a settlement to the conflict with Ukraine.
Putin's aide claimed the conversation was wide-ranging and that Trump expressed his desire for a swift end to Russia's war with Ukraine.
Meanwhile, they said that Putin wanted to keep negotiating but said Moscow remained focused on ending 'root causes' of the conflict.

Explosions rock Kyiv as Putin's forces bombard Ukraine's capital and Trump says 'no progress' on ceasefire

A decision by Washington earlier this week to halt some shipments of critical weapons to Ukraine prompted warnings by Kyiv that the move would weaken its ability to defend against intensifying airstrikes and battlefield advances. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that he hopes to speak with Trump on Friday about the supply of US weapons.

Russia pounds Kyiv in ballistic missile attack in ‘terror and murder' blitz as Trump makes ‘no progress' on Putin call

VICIOUS VLAD Russia pounds Kyiv in ballistic missile attack in 'terror and murder' blitz as Trump makes 'no progress' on Putin call A WAVE of Russian drone attacks struck Ukraine overnight just hours after a phone call between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin ended with "no progress at all". Explosions rocked Kyiv in the early hours of Friday as air defense units battled drones across both banks of the Dnipro River. The Svyatoshynskyi and Solomanskyi districts were among the hardest hit, with blazes on rooftops and in courtyards, and injuries feared. The barrage came hot on the heels of Trump's phone conversation with Putin, in which the Russian tyrant reportedly once again refused to back down from his war aims. 'I didn't make any progress with him at all,' the US President told reporters outside a Washington air base on Thursday. Advertisement The nearly hour-long call, which also touched on the Middle East and cultural diplomacy, appeared to achieve little beyond hardened positions. While Trump emphasized the need to end military hostilities, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said Putin was firm, stating: 'Russia will continue to pursue its goals.' He added that Moscow 'will not back down' and is focused on addressing what it calls the 'root causes' of the war — a thinly veiled reference to NATO expansion and Western military support for Ukraine. The call took place amid a growing outcry over the US decision to halt some critical arms shipments to Ukraine, including Patriot missiles and precision-guided munitions. Advertisement Trump defended the pause, blaming his predecessor Joe Biden. He said: 'Biden emptied out our whole country giving them weapons, and we have to make sure that we have enough for ourselves.' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he hoped to speak with Trump about the weapons pause, warning that the delay could embolden Moscow. Speaking from Denmark on Thursday, he said: 'In Russia, only Putin makes decisions, which is why we need a meeting at the leadership level if we want to have peace.' Advertisement But peace seemed more distant than ever as the death toll mounted. In Poltava on Thursday, two people were killed and 47 injured in a Russian airstrike that also ignited a fire at a military draft office — part of what Ukraine called a targeted effort to disrupt its mobilisation efforts. Another drone attack earlier in the week struck near a recruitment centre in Kryvyi Rih. Meanwhile, Russia claimed to have captured the border village of Milove in Kharkiv region, opening a new front in the northeast. Ukraine has not confirmed the report. Advertisement More to follow...
