Major forest fire in Greece forces several villages to evacuate

Arab Times23-07-2025
ATHENS, Greece, July 23, (AP): A major forest fire broke out near the Greek city of Corinth on Tuesday, prompting authorities to order the evacuation of several villages. More than 180 firefighters, 15 planes and 12 helicopters were tackling the wildfire in a pine forest in the mountains near Corinth, the fire department said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties. Weather conditions were particularly tough for firefighters. Temperatures have risen to around 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in many parts of the country. Earlier Tuesday, a firefighting helicopter crashed into the sea and sank while attempting to take on water to tackle a separate fire near Athens.
The three crew were rescued and transported to a hospital. Wildfires are frequent in Greece during its hot, dry summers, and the fire department has tackled dozens across the country this year. In 2018, a massive fire swept through the seaside town of Mati, east of Athens, trapping people in homes and on roads as they tried to flee. More than 100 died, including some who drowned while trying to swim away.

Second earthquake hits New York City region within several days

HILLSDALE, NJ, Aug 6, (AP): A second small earthquake rattled the New York metropolitan area on Tuesday within several days of another. The 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck a little after noon near suburban Hillsdale, New Jersey, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of the Bronx in New York City, according to the US Geological Survey. There were no initial reports of damages or injuries from the quake, which was felt in the city and Connecticut. The tremor came after a 3.0 magnitude earthquake shook the area Saturday night. That earthquake struck Hasbrouck Heights, which is about 9 miles (14 kilometers) south of Hillsdale. Though the two relatively mild quakes occurred nearby over several days, geophysicist Jessica Turner of the National Earthquake Information Center said it was 'a little hard' to label the second one an aftershock. 'While it did occur about nine miles to the north of the earthquake that occurred on August 2nd, we aren't quite sure because it's not right on top of that location,' she said. 'We aren't quite sure if this is an aftershock of that earthquake or if maybe it's just kind of like a separate earthquake that occurred.'

Wildfire in southern France kills 1 and injures several

PARIS. Aug 6, (AP): A fast-moving wildfire in a Mediterranean region of France near the Spanish border has left one person dead, several others injured and was still spreading Wednesday after damaging a swath of land as big as Paris overnight, authorities said. About 1,500 firefighters worked overnight to contain the blaze, which broke out Tuesday afternoon in the village of Ribaute in the Aude region. It remained ''very active'' on Wednesday and weather conditions were unfavorable, the local administration said in a statement. One person died in their home and nine others were injured, and at least one person was missing, the statement said. It said the fire had spread for 12 hours over 11,000 hectares of land, which is roughly equivalent to the size of the French capital. That makes it the biggest wildfire in France so far this summer. Southern Europe has seen multiple large fires this summer. Scientists warn that climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of heat and dryness, making the region more vulnerable to wildfires. Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent, with temperatures increasing at twice the speed of the global average since the 1980s, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service.

Heatwave hits Iran

TEHRAN: High voltage electrical transmission towers are pictured at sunset in western Tehran.- AFP DUBAI: A heatwave in Iran is straining the country's water and power supplies, prompting local authorities to order the closure of public buildings and banks in the capital Tehran and several other provinces on Wednesday, local media reported. The country's meteorological organization put nine of the country's 31 provinces on orange alert for at least the rest of the week, forecasting highs of up to 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) for several days in some areas. High temperatures in Iran are common during the summer months, but reservoirs are depleted after repeated droughts and electricity supplies struggle to cope when air conditioners are cranked up in homes and workplaces. The closure of banks, government offices and other public buildings on Wednesday will affect the provinces of Mazandaran, Markazi, Yazd, Semnan, Kermanshah and Razavi Khorasan, along with the capital, local media said on Tuesday. 'Due to rising temperatures and the necessity of optimizing and managing energy consumption, the activities of executive agencies in Tehran province will be closed on Wednesday,' state broadcaster IRINN quoted Tehran Governor Mohammadsadeq Motamedian as saying. Medical facilities, private companies and selected bank branches will remain open. Last week, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that the country's excessive water consumption was untenable and could leave cities including Tehran with severe shortages by September. In July 2024, during another severe heatwave, several provinces across Iran decided to close public offices for a few days to save on water and electricity. — Reuters
