Obama to host London event - here's how much tickets cost

Daily Mail10-07-2025
Barack Obama is taking the stage in London this fall and offering guests the opportunity to say hello and share a drink. But the meet-and-greet with the former president will set you back a pretty penny, with tickets costing as much as $2,430 (£1,790). The 63-year-old's An Evening With President Barack Obama event will come to London's O2 Arena on September 24.
Four VIP packages are currently available event organizer Seat Unique's website, ranging from $671 (£495) to more than $1,214 (£895) depending on the selected ticket package. The $1,214 dining package is nearly sold out with only six tickets remaining.
It includes a four-course meal at the Gaucho steakhouse, a glass of champagne, a seat in the first ten rows at the O2, access to the Seat Unique Club afterparty, and a copy of Obama's book. General admission seats for the event, without all the bells and whistles of premium packages, are available for $172 (£127) each, according to Ticketmaster.
A top tier VIP option, which according to the Evening Standard is only sold in pairs, will offer guests an opportunity to pose for a photo with Obama, subject to security clearance. The package is understood to be more expensive than the dining package, with the newspaper suggesting it will cost at least $2,430. However, the Daily Mail could not independently verify that price as these tickets appear to have already sold out.
The cheapest hospitality package, titled the premium ticket, costs $671 per ticket and offers guests guaranteed premium seating, priority access to the arena, a welcome drink at the Seat Unique Club, post-show access to the club and a copy of Obama's new book. Two other hospitality packages - the Seventh Row and Seat Unique Club packages -cost $745 (£549) and $1,800 (£795), respectively.
Tickets went on sale Thursday, with organizers having reportedly set aside 100 seats for charitable organizations. It is unclear if Obama, worth an estimated $70 million, will be donating any of the profits or ticket sales to charity or if he and Seat Unique will be pocketing the funds. Daily Mail has approached Seat Unique for further information.
The event will see the president be interviewed by British-Nigerian historian David Olusoga. Obama is expected to speak about his experiences as a two-term US president and his thoughts on the future of the nation. The event organizers, in a statement to the Standard , said they are 'incredibly honored to bring President Obama to the UK'.
'His message of unity and progress resonates deeply, and we anticipate an evening that will inspire and empower all who attend,' the statement said. 'We believe in providing exceptional experiences, and this event perfectly aligns with our mission to connect people with inspiring moments.' Obama is a highly regarded speaker and in 2022 won an Emmy for best narrator for his work on the Netflix docuseries Our Great National Parks.
He also previously won a Grammy for his audiobook reading of both his memoirs. But Obama's high-dollar prices are arguably a bit steep, with the top level ticket costing more than double what London-based Beyoncé fans paid to see her Cowboy Carter Tour last month.

Lisa Nandy in new cronyism row after charity choice for project

A charity with close links to the Labour Party received taxpayers' money to carry out a culture department research project, only a few months after a former trustee became the culture secretary's special adviser, The Times can reveal. Lisa Nandy, the culture secretary, announced a 'listening exercise' to form a new national youth strategy shortly after scrapping the National Citizen Service, a coalition-era project for 16 to 17-year-olds. A £282,395 contract was awarded to the market research company Savanta in February to conduct further research into what young people wanted from the strategy. Savanta in turn sub-contracted the small London-based charity My Life My Say to run a series of workshops asking young people what they wanted from the new strategy. Nandy's special adviser, Harjeet Sahota, served as a trustee at the My Life My Say for three years, until she resigned on August 28 after joining Nandy as a political adviser in the culture department under the new Labour government. My Life My Say was founded in 2013 by Mete Coban, the deputy mayor of London for the environment and energy. Sahota served as a trustee at the same time that she was head of external relations for Sir Keir Starmer, then leader of the opposition. Before that she worked for Sir Sadiq Khan's re-election campaign in 2020. Sources said information about the appointment of My Life My Say — which would usually be shared within the department — was not disclosed in the case of the 'listening exercise'. They also flagged concerns about the involvement of the charity UK Youth in the delivery of the new strategy. In January 2025 a director of the charity was seconded into Nandy's department to lead development of the new youth strategy. In March, UK Youth was announced as a partner alongside My Life My Say in the consultation exercise. It is not known how much was received by either My Life My Say or UK Youth through Savanta for the delivery of the contract. UK Youth is a much larger charity and received about £16 million in income during the last financial year, compared with less than £400,000 for My Life My Say. A government official said Sahota logged her past involvement with My Life My Say and recused herself from the procurement process. New procurement legislation, which came into effect in February, forces ministers and their advisers to declare potential conflicts of interest when their department awards contracts. Procurement experts have also called for more transparency so that the government publishes the details of companies and organisations that have been subcontracted to work on government projects. Ben Paxton, a senior researcher at the Institute for Government think tank, said: 'The lack of visibility of the supply chain can limit accountability, particularly where conflicts of interest may be a concern. 'It's crucial for all public procurement that the proper process is followed, to ensure government is meeting the ultimate aim of delivering the best services for the best price possible.' A DCMS spokesman said: 'In order to undertake one of the largest government listening exercises with young people in a generation, DCMS appointed Savanta as the project's lead delivery partner through an open, fair and competitive tender process in line with government procurement guidance. The details of this procurement are publicly available on Contracts Finder. 'My Life My Say is a sub-contractor to Savanta, with all payments managed through Savanta rather than directly by DCMS. Robust conflict of interest procedures were followed throughout. No individuals with declared conflicts of interest were involved in the procurement process, which was delivered through the department's commercial team following standard procedures.' A spokesman for the charity said: 'My Life My Say is an award-winning youth-led charity, recognised by successive governments for our work championing young people's voices. As a leading youth engagement charity in the UK, we are proud to have partnered with Savanta on one of the largest national listening exercises with young people ever conducted in the UK to help shape the national youth strategy. 'While we are aware of our former trustee Harjeet Sahota's role at DCMS, we can confirm that Harjeet voluntarily stepped down as a trustee in August 2024 and has had no discussions in regards to this contract with staff at My Life My Say.' • Labour vowed to end cronyism. Unless they're Labour cronies Labour has faced allegations of 'cronyism' in recent weeks, after one of the party's pre-election donors won contracts worth millions of pounds. Tech consultancy Public Digital seconded one of its partners to work for Peter Kyle, the technology secretary, in the months leading up the election to help write Labour's tech policies. The donation was registered as being worth £100,000 and the partner, Emily Middleton, was given a senior civil service role in Kyle's department just weeks after the election. The company has gone on to win £10.2 million of contracts since Labour entered office to transform a series of different IT systems, which the government says followed all procurement rules.

Can you solve it? Are you a matcha for these tasty Japanese puzzles?

Japan is a world puzzle superpower. Its grid logic puzzles – like Sudoku, Kakuro, KenKen and many more – are played across the world by millions every day. The country also has its own culture of mathematical puzzles, nurtured by the Academy of Recreational Mathematics, Japan, which was founded in 1979. Today's problems are by Yoshiyuki Kotani, a founder member of the Academy and a professor of engineering at Tokyo University. They are taken from his new book, Tasty Japanese Morsels in Recreational Mathematics. 1. Squid game Two octopuses will face off in a boxing match. Each octopus requires eight gloves. (There is no distinction between left and right gloves.) The rules of octopus boxing stipulate that an octopus must only wear gloves of the same colour. There is a bag containing 16 red gloves and 16 green gloves. Find the minimum number of gloves that must be drawn at random from the bag to guarantee that the colours of the gloves of the two octopuses are (a) the same. (b) different. (c) either the same or different. 2. Sum-o wrestling. The diagram below represents a multiplication in which all but two of the digits have been replaced by stars. Reconstruct the computation. 3. Another boxing puzzle A restaurant uses 4 × 4 and 5 × 5 Bento boxes each divided into exactly eight square sections, as shown in the diagram below The chef has asked you to create Bento boxes with rectangular boxes. Each Bento must still have eight square sections, even though, as in the example, the square sections do not have to be all of the same size. Design a 4 × 6 Bento box, a 3 × 9 Bento box, and a 5 × 6 Bento box. I'll be back at 5pm UK. PLEASE NO SPOILERS. Please discuss your favourite Japanese things. Tasty Japanese Morsels in Recreational Mathematics by Yoshiyuki Kotani s published by the American Mathematical Association. All the diagrams above are taken from the book. I've been setting a puzzle here on alternate Mondays since 2015. I'm always on the look-out for great puzzles. If you would like to suggest one, email me. PS: Might anyone with computer skills be able to help me create a web page for a puzzle that involves dragging shapes around the screen? I hope to use the puzzle in a future column. If you think you can help, email me.

We all know there's a big one coming in August, but when exactly is it? Could it be today? Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The late August bank holiday has been part of the UK calendar for decades, originally intended to give workers a break before the summer season wrapped up. The popular summer holiday is often marked by festivals, trips to the seaside, family barbecues, and one last dose of summer before autumn begins to creep in. But if you've found yourself wondering whether Monday, August 18, 2025 is a bank holiday, the answer is: unfortunately, no. Even though today isn't a bank holiday, it's easy to see why people check – August has that 'holiday' feel, and many of us are looking forward to squeezing in one last summer adventure. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad But when exactly is the August bank holiday? On what official days off from work can Brits look forward to in the remainder of 2025? (Photo: Pexels) | Pexels Is today a bank holiday? While the mid-August Monday might have you dreaming of a long weekend, the actual late August bank holiday doesn't arrive until the following week. In 2025, it falls on Monday, August 25 across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Its placement on the last Monday of August is ideal for making the most of warm weather while it lasts. Many use it for quick getaways, big events, or just enjoying a lazy day at home. Whether you're planning to hit a music festival, take a trip to the coast, or simply enjoy a quiet day with family and friends, now is a good time to start pencilling in your plans. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad But it's worth remembering that bank holiday dates can vary depending on where you live in the UK. While England, Wales, and Northern Ireland all observe the August bank holiday on the last Monday of the month, Scotland has its summer bank holiday on the first Monday of August. So for Scots, the long weekend has already been and gone this year. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad When is the next bank holiday? If you're already thinking ahead, the next UK-wide bank holidays after August will be Christmas Day on Thursday, December 25 and Boxing Day on Friday, December 26, 2025. That means the late August long weekend is your last chance for an official day off before the festive season. Are you struggling to make ends meet as costs continue to rise?
