District attorneys says Alabama teen killed by police had grabbed a gun
A district attorney said Wednesday that an Alabama police officer who fatally shot a teenager in the back was justified in his use of deadly force because the youth grabbed a gun after struggling with the officer.
But the teen's family questioned that conclusion and said they have many unanswered questions about what had happened.
Jefferson County District Attorney Dany Carr announced that no charges will be brought against the officer who shot and killed Jabari Peoples, 18. Peoples was shot on June 23 by a police officer in a parking lot in Homewood, an affluent suburb near the city of Birmingham.
Peoples and a friend had been parked in the parking lot. Carr said an officer had approached the car at about 9:30 p.m. and attempted to detain Peoples because of suspected marijuana in the car. The officer attempted to put handcuffs on Mr. Peoples 'for officer safety' after noticing a gun in the car door but a struggle ensued, Carr wrote. He said Peoples then ran back to his vehicle and grabbed a gun.
'At the time of the shooting, Mr. Peoples had the gun in his right hand and the officer fired one shot, hitting Mr. Peoples in the left side of the back causing injury that ultimately caused his death,' Carr wrote in a statement.
Carr made the announcement immediately after showing the family body camera footage of the shooting. The footage has not been released to the public.
But a family member said they were only shown a short clip that was hard to see and want additional information.
'I have so many unanswered questions, still. Today, what I saw on this video, my brother was afraid. He was scared. He was running for his life,' Angel Smith, People's sister, said.
Smith said her brother could be heard saying, 'Sir, I promise I'm not trying to resist.'
Ben Crump, an attorney representing the family, said they want full transparency. He said the police department should release all of the available video.
'We want exactly what you would want if this was your son that was shot in the back running away from the police,' Crump said.
Homewood Police Chief Tim Ross did not immediately return an email seeking comment.
Groups have staged regular protests in Homewood since the shooting, criticizing the police department's refusal to show the video to family members.
Carr made the decision to show the video to family members after the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency turned its findings over to his office.
Peoples was a 2024 graduate of Aliceville High School in the city of the same name, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of Homewood.

Steve Goncalves Wants A Law To Confiscate Bryan Kohberger's Commissary Funds Steve Goncalves has revealed he is pushing for harsher consequences for Bryan Kohberger beyond the four consecutive life sentences he received for murdering Kaylee Goncalves and three other University of Idaho students. Speaking with TMZ, the grieving father shared he has held talks with two Idaho legislators to propose a law that will possibly confiscate some or all of the commissary funds of convicted murderers like Kohberger. He claimed the intention was to use these funds to reimburse taxpayers for the costs of investigating the crimes of these criminals, although he initially imagined such funds should be better spent on a firing squad. Throughout the duration of the case, Kohberger received various donations from fans to his commissary account. However, these amounts seem negligible compared to the funds Idaho State spent on the case. By April 2024, the state had reportedly spent over $3.6 million prosecuting the murders, with costs likely significantly higher by the time Kohberger chose to accept a plea deal. The Grieving Father Is Upset About The Release Of Crime Scene Photos In the wake of Kohberger signing a plea deal and being sentenced, a number of documents from the investigation carried out by authorities have made their way to the media. These include interviews with some of the convicted murderer's colleagues, dates, and fellow inmates, as well as numerous photos of the areas in the off-campus home where the former PhD student killed Kaylee and her friends in November 2022. Speaking about these releases, Goncalves said it was upsetting to see the crime scene photos and other information about the murders made public. He added that the victims' families preferred such material remain private and that he personally feels it is unnecessary now that the case is over. He also believes these details are not relevant to justice and are purely sensationalist. Steve Goncalves Disagreed With Bryan Kohberger's Plea Deal Goncalves was among the loudest voices from the victims' families to speak out against the plea deal Bryan Kohberger accepted. 'Idaho has failed. They failed me. They failed my whole family," said Goncalves in an interview with NBC's 'Today' show after news of the plea deal agreement surfaced. "It's my daughter. It's our children. How can you say it's just when you haven't even talked to us to see what justice looks like for us?" he added. The Grieving Father Blasted The Idaho Killer In His Victim Impact Statement When it became clear the plea deal would stand, Steve Gonvalves delivered an intense victim impact statement at the convicted murderer's sentencing while locking eyes with him the entire time. 'You're a joke, a complete joke,' Goncalves said at the time, per the New York Post. 'You were that foolish, that careless, that stupid… We knew from the very beginning we had you.' He further remarked, 'Nobody cares about you. You're not worth the time, the effort to be remembered. In time, you'll be nothing but two initials forgotten to the wind.' Bryan Kohberger Is Currently In Solitary Confinement At A Maximum Security Prison Prior to Kohberger's sentencing, he was residing at the Latah County Jail, which is closer to the court location. Now, the 30-year-old has been placed in solitary confinement at the J Block in the Idaho Maximum Security Institution. Per the Department of Corrections' website, he is one of the 535 'volatile male residents' the institution currently houses alongside Chad Daybell, the convicted child murderer and husband of "Doomsday" cult mom Lori Vallow. The prison is considered one of the harshest in America, with inmates living in single-person cells and only allowed to be outdoors for one hour each day. It is also remote and highly secured by a double perimeter fence topped with razor wire, an electronic detection system, and 24-hour armed patrols.
