US-China trade talks stalled, businesses wait for Trump and Xi to intervene
Since the mid-May agreement, the Trump administration has shifted focus toward negotiating tariffs with other major trading partners including India Japan, and the European Union. Last week, Trump threatened to impose 50% tariffs on EU products but later postponed the move. read more US President Donald Trump hailed a "total reset" in US-China trade relations, ahead of a second day of talks Sunday between top officials from Washington and Beijing aimed at de-escalating trade tensions sparked by his aggressive tariff rollout. File Image / Reuters Trade discussions between the United States and China have reached a standstill, and moving forward may now depend on direct engagement between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Speaking with Fox News, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Thursday that progress has slowed since the breakthrough talks he led two weeks ago, which resulted in a temporary halt to escalating tariffs between the two economic giants. Despite the slowdown, he expressed hope that more negotiations would resume in the coming weeks. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I think there's a chance we'll see a call between President Trump and Chairman Xi at some point,' Bessent said. Highlighting the complexity and scale of the issues at hand, he added, 'This process is likely to require both leaders stepping in. They have a strong rapport, and I'm confident that China will engage once President Trump signals his direction.' The temporary truce, which paused triple-digit tariffs for 90 days, sparked a surge in global markets. However, the underlying concerns that led to the tariffs—particularly U.S. grievances over China's state-controlled, export-centric economic practices—remain unresolved and are expected to be tackled in future discussions. Since the mid-May agreement, the Trump administration has shifted focus toward negotiating tariffs with other major trading partners including India Japan, and the European Union. Last week, Trump threatened to impose 50% tariffs on EU products but later postponed the move. Meanwhile, a U.S. trade court ruled on Wednesday that Trump exceeded his authority when applying most of the tariffs on Chinese and other foreign imports using emergency powers. However, a federal appeals court reversed that ruling the following day, placing a temporary hold while it reviews the government's appeal. The court directed the plaintiffs to respond by June 5, with the administration's reply due by June 9. Despite the legal uncertainties, Bessent noted that countries like Japan remain committed to negotiations. He reported no shift in their negotiating positions following the court developments and confirmed plans to meet with a Japanese delegation in Washington on Friday.

Colombia surprised Tharoor. Does its pro-Pak stance have China link?
A friend of a friend also becomes your friend, the saying goes. It holds true in geopolitics as well. An example is Colombia, which has singed India by expressing condolences over the loss of lives (read terrorists) in Pakistan in India's Operation Sindoor. Colombia's move was vehemently deplored by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor as he visited the South American country as part of India's global outreach to expose Pakistan's role in why would Colombia, a country in far off South America that has been a victim of terrorism itself, side with terror-sponsor Pakistan? It shouldn't be too difficult to gauge if seen against the recent developments. Earlier in May, Colombia signed a joint cooperation plan under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the ambitious connectivity project of China, Pakistan's "all-weather friend". It came as the country started leaning towards China on trade amid strained ties with the US under Donald Trump. Against the backdrop of these developments, little is left to imagination as to why Colombia, rather than sympathising with India following the Pahalgam terror attack, chose to mourn the loss of terrorists in THAROOR ON COLOMBIA'S PAK STANCEAt a press briefing in Colombia's capital Bogota, Tharoor did not hide his were a little disappointed in the reaction of the Colombian government... We will say to our friends in Columbia there can be no equivalence between those who dispatch terrorists and those who resist them. There can be no equivalence between those who attack and those who defend," the MP from Kerala spelt Lok Sabha MP, who is leading one of the seven delegations, made it clear that India could not have allowed the Pahalgam terror attack to go unanswered and underscored that under Operation Sindoor, only terror camps were targeted."Just as Colombia has endured many terror attacks, so have we in India. We are only exercising our right of self-defence. We are here to dispel any such misunderstanding," he further Tharoor was defending India in Colombia, his own party used the issue to attack the government back home."What is happening in foreign policy? A country like Colombia is standing with Pakistan. We will not ask which country stood with India?" Congress spokesperson Asma Tasleem tweeted. Colombian President Gustavo Petro with Xi Jinping in Beijing (AFP) COLOMBIA'S SHIFT TOWARDS CHINAWhile India and Colombia have a long history of diplomatic relations, with cooperation in trade and renewable energy, there seems to be a China link to the South American nation's pro-Pakistan President Gustavo Petro, the country's fiscal situation has worsened in recent years amid rising fuel and food costs. In 2024, GDP growth plummeted to 0.6% from 7.3% in top of that, Petro has crossed swords with Trump as his government leans towards China. He even called the US President "Donald Duck". That's quite a shift, because until recently, Colombia was one of America's closest trade and security trigger point was deportation flights from the US carrying alleged illegal Colombian immigrants. While Colombia initially denied entry to US military planes, viewing it as a sort of humiliation, it then sent its own aircraft to bring them home. The move came after Trump warned of hefty US DANCE IN TRUMP'S BACKYARDIn comes China, which moved swiftly to make Colombia part of its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Colombian Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia described the development as the country's "boldest step in decades".Beijing's China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a part of the BRI, which aims to develop trade routes connecting China to the rest of the world. However, the US views it as China's bid to increase its sphere of China has surpassed the US as the biggest trading partner of several countries (Brazil, Peru, Chile) in Latin America, considered the US's backyard. Moreover, around two-thirds of Latin American countries have signed up to the Colombia now part of the BRI, China has also extended a welcome gift, proposing to sell two dozen Chengdu J-10CE 'Vigorous Dragon' fighter jets. The move is a familiar part of China's powerplay. Pakistan is also heavily dependent on China for its defence needs (it imports nearly 82% of its military hardware). Thus, in light of these developments, there's little left to guess why Colombia chose to side with China's "ironclad friend" Pakistan as tensions ran high with Watch

Elon Musk exits White House, 'poaches' top Trump aide Stephen Miller's wife Katie for private sector role
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has made his exit from the federal government, and it appears he is taking one of President Donald Trump's top aides with him. The wife of Stephen Miller , one of Trump's top aides, has reportedly left the White House to work for Elon Musk. Katie Miller is following Elon Musk from the White House back to the private sector as the tech billionaire has officially left his post in Washington, D.C. Kate Miller was working as an adviser for Musk's Department of Government Efficiency but now that the mogul's time in Washington, D.C., is up, she is working for him 'full time,' CNN reported. Sources told the network that Kate Miller has been taking the lead on communications, including arranging Musk's interviews in connection with SpaceX's Starship launch. She shared content on her X account from Musk's interviews at SpaceX's Starbase in Texas and a quote from him about how 'DOGE is a way of life, like Buddhism.' Her new duties could include booking his media appearances for Tesla and SpaceX, one source confirmed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mensualités: Bonne nouvelle pour les propriétaires étouffés par les crédits Bons plans propriétaires En savoir plus Undo ALSO READ: DOGE's latest action amid crackdown on federal spending days after Elon Musk quits Trump team Musk quits White House Elon Musk officially announced his departure from the White House Wednesday after his 130-day term as a special government employee came to an end this week. Kate Miller was also considered a special government employee, which enables private sector individuals to work for the government for a limited number of days per year. Live Events According to a report by WIRED, she was appointed to lead communications for DOGE under Musk prior to his transition to the White House. An official told the outlet that her connection to Elon Musk was 'central to DOGE's interactions with the rest of the White House.' They added, 'She's the key intermediary—delivering DOGE's daily messaging across the administration and handling the delivery of any sensitive or unwelcome news to Musk.' WIRED also reported that Stephen Miller and his wife, Kate Miller, were 'pivotal figures in Musk's orbit' during his time at the White House. Stephen and Kate first met in 2017 while working on some of the Trump administration's most controversial immigration policies. Kate had recently been appointed deputy press secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, while Stephen was architecting the administration's family separation policy—a move that drew widespread international criticism. Their roles eventually brought them to the U.S.–Mexico border. ALSO READ: 'Life-threatening' bacteria found in invasive tick for first time in US. Musk's exit from the White House—with Kate Miller accompanying him—came just one day after he publicly expressed disappointment in what President Biden has referred to as his 'big beautiful bill.' The bill includes tax cuts and stricter immigration enforcement measures. Musk criticized it in an interview with CBS, calling it a 'massive spending bill' that worsens the federal deficit and 'undermines DOGE's mission.' Stephen Miller responded indirectly on X, without naming Musk, disputing the claim that the bill increases the deficit. He clarified that DOGE cuts apply to discretionary spending, such as the federal bureaucracy, and noted that under Senate budget rules, discretionary spending cannot be cut through reconciliation. 'So DOGE cuts would have to be done through a rescissions package or an appropriations bill,' he wrote. Musk voiced frustration over his political efforts, telling The Washington Post that he had underestimated the challenges within the federal bureaucracy. 'It's a much tougher fight than I expected,' he said. 'I knew there were issues, but trying to fix things in D.C. is definitely an uphill battle.' Following four turbulent months—which included posing with a chainsaw, donning a cheesehead to support a losing conservative candidate in Wisconsin, and staging a Tesla car show outside the White House—Musk is now refocusing on his business ventures.
