B.S. Nagesh Steps Down as Chairman of Shoppers Stop After Over 30 Years
B.S. Nagesh has retired as chairman of Shoppers Stop Ltd, bringing to a close a journey of more than three decades with the company. The announcement was made during the company's annual general meeting on Thursday. Nagesh's exit marks a significant leadership transition at a time when the retailer is dealing with increased competition and several top-level departures.
Nagesh was among the founding members who launched Shoppers Stop in 1991. Under his leadership, the company grew from a single store in Mumbai to a presence across 70 cities with 299 outlets, including department stores, value-fashion stores under the Intune brand, and beauty retail spaces. He played a pivotal role in introducing international brands to the Indian market, building a successful loyalty programme, and navigating economic shifts in consumer spending. Shoppers Stop, part of the K Raheja Corp group, went public in 2003. From FY04 to FY25, revenue rose from INR 401 crore to INR 5,427 crore.
Following his retirement, Nirvik Singh has been appointed as the new chairman. Singh, who is international president at Grey Group, has served as a director at Shoppers Stop since 2008. His appointment took effect on 18 July.
The company's recent quarterly performance showed improvement, with revenue rising 6 percent to INR 1,094 crore. Net loss narrowed to INR 18 crore, supported by strong demand for luxury and fashion products. CEO Kavindra Mishra highlighted that premium brands now contribute 67 percent of department store sales, indicating a shift in consumer preferences.
Despite these gains, the company has faced internal challenges. The last fiscal year saw six senior-level resignations, including top roles in marketing, e-commerce, and human resources. The company responded with new appointments, such as Jiten Mahendra and Mohit Seth, in July 2024. Mishra, initially hired as chief operating officer, was elevated to CEO after Venu Nair's exit, becoming the third person to hold the position in five years.
The First Citizen loyalty programme continues to anchor customer retention, contributing 85 percent of overall sales. Among these, 70 percent came from repeat buyers.
Shoppers Stop is focusing on its Intune and beauty verticals to expand its revenue base. Intune posted INR 68 crore in sales during the April to June quarter, doubling from last year. Its beauty business reported INR 219 crore in sales. Meanwhile, private brands contributed INR 156 crore, with growth driven by kidswear and women's western apparel.
While facing stiff competition from Trent's Zudio, Shoppers Stop's newer verticals continue to build momentum.

Rupee to rise at open on NDF lift; U.S. tariffs, inflation on radar
By Nimesh Vora MUMBAI (Reuters) -The rupee is set to open higher on Monday, supported by its recovery in the non-deliverable forward market, while traders remain focused on potential fallout from U.S. tariffs and the upcoming U.S. inflation data. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated the rupee will open in the 87.52-87.56 range versus the U.S. dollar, compared with 87.66 on Friday. The NDF move feels "purely positional" and there was no real shift in underlying sentiment, a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank said, with the structural bias on USD/INR remaining higher till the tariff overhang is in play. The tactical adjustment in NDF likely reflects some trimming of heavy-dollar positions, with the Reserve Bank of India's intervention likely prompting speculators who were betting on a quick leg higher in USD/INR to think twice, the trader said. Over the last two weeks, the RBI has intervened in the non-deliverable forward and onshore spot markets to cushion the rupee against tariff pressures stemming from U.S. President Donald Trump's actions. SOFT US DOLLAR A broadly softer dollar, on growing bets of a Federal Reserve rate cut next month, is expected to aid the rupee amid the tariff noise. The dollar index fell on Monday, extending losses from last week, while most Asian currencies advanced. July U.S. inflation data, due on Tuesday, will be key to gauging Fed rate-cut expectations and the dollar's direction. While the full impact of the latest tariffs may take time to filter into the inflation numbers, the July print will still be heavily scrutinised, MUFG Bank said in a note, adding that June data already showed signs that tariff rates are starting to have a bigger impact. Traders currently see a 90% chance of a September Fed rate cut and are pricing in just over two cuts for the year. KEY INDICATORS: ** One-month non-deliverable rupee forward at 87.66; onshore one-month forward premium at 12 paise ** Dollar index down at 98.08 ** Brent crude futures down 0.5% at $66.3 per barrel ** Ten-year U.S. note yield at 4.28% ** As per NSDL data, foreign investors sold a net $629.4 million worth of Indian shares on Aug 7 ** NSDL data shows foreign investors bought a net $69.1 million worth of Indian bonds on Aug 7 Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data

The deal is valued at approximately KRW 500 billion (USD 400 million), making it one of the largest transactions in South Korea's HR tech industry to date. EQT secured exclusive negotiation rights and led the transaction on a proprietary basis, preempting a competitive bidding process, by leveraging its deep sector expertise to recognize Remember's differentiated investment proposition early on. Beyond recruitment, Remember has evolved into a comprehensive platform integrating content-driven networking, CRM capabilities, and lead generation tools. Often referred to as the "LinkedIn of Korea", it has established a strong presence in a market where LinkedIn remains underpenetrated, while advancing more inclusive and efficient hiring across industries. The deal is underpinned by strong macro tailwinds in South Korea, including demographic shifts, increasing demand for experienced hires and the evolution of recruitment technologies. These conditions are accelerating the adoption of outsourced and AI-enabled talent platforms, particularly among mid-sized and enterprise clients. Backed by strong conviction in these trends, EQT has made several relevant HR tech investments including Beamery in the UK, HRBrain in Japan, Handshake in the US, and PageUp in Australia. Ark & Partners, recognized as a next-generation growth buyout investor in Korea's private equity industry, played a pivotal role in this transaction. Since acquiring Remember in December 2021, Ark & Partners has strengthened the Company's operational capabilities and transformed the business model from a business card app into a fast-growing HR tech platform. As a result, Remember's revenue grew more than twelvefold within three years. Dayea Yeon, Partner in the EQT Private Capital advisory team and Head of EQT Private Capital Korea, said: "Remember is a rare and differentiated asset, uniquely positioned at the intersection of South Korea's demographic structural transformation and the rise of AI-driven talent management. Sungmin Kim, Founder and CEO of Ark & Partners, added: "This transaction is a strong validation of our 'secondary growth buyout' strategy, demonstrating how hands-on operational and strategic support can unlock the full potential of high-growth companies. The transition from Ark & Partners to EQT, represents a 'new-generation deal' that highlights the growing interplay between South Korea's venture ecosystem and private equity market. From the beginning, we had conviction in Remember's ability to lead Korea's HR tech transformation. We are proud of what has been achieved and confident that EQT is the ideal long-term partner to guide Remember through its next chapter of growth." EQT has been active in South Korea since 1998 and views the country as a core pillar of its Asia Pacific strategy across private equity, infrastructure and real estate. Through its private capital strategy, EQT aims to support South Korean businesses in achieving their growth and operational ambitions by drawing on the expertise of its global sector teams, in-house capabilities in sustainability and digitalization, and a worldwide network of industry advisors. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected to close in Q3 2025. Surprise reaction to JB Hi-Fi's big profits
Key Australian retail bellwether JB Hi-Fi has recorded hugely profitable full-year financial results. Results posted on Monday show JB Hi-Fi Australia sales rose 7.5 per cent for the year to $7.1bn, with profit rising 6 per cent despite tighter margins. Despite a higher final dividend and a special dividend for shareholders, investors were not convinced of the company's worth, with the share price losing almost 7 per cent in the first two hours of trading. JB Hi-Fi is a key indicator of consumer confidence in Australia; the $12.5bn company is the third-largest company on the ASX discretionaries sector. The share price fell on Monday morning after the company announced chief executive Terry Smart would be stepping down after 20 years in charge. The financial results were better than market expectations and bolstered by sales at premium home appliance retailer E&S, which the company bought in September. JB Hi-Fi Ltd also owns The Good Guys, which posted a 6.9 per cent lift in sales ($2.9bn) and an even fatter profit increase (to 8.2 per cent). The group's overall net profit was up 5.4 per cent (to $462.4m) but was dented after The Good Guys settled a lawsuit with the competition regulator for $13.7m over misleading statements about store credit. At JB Hi-Fi's Australian stores, increasing sales were driven by the new Nintendo Switch despite more discounting and promotions cutting into margins. Compared with the year prior, JB Hi-Fi New Zealand proved more profitable in all key measures. The outgoing chief executive also presented shareholders an increased dividend and a special dividend. 'It has been another strong year of sales and earnings, as we built on the momentum of the previous year,' Mr Smart said. 'The company stayed focused on its core proposition of driving great value and delivering consistently high levels of customer service which continued to resonate.' A final dividend of $1.05 was declared, bringing the total ordinary dividend to $2.75, a $0.14 increase on last year. JB Hi-Fi will also pay a fully franked $1 special dividend next month.
