Author: Pascale Sablan
By shedding light on overlooked figures in architecture, 'Greatness: Diverse Designers of Architecture,' published this year, makes an urgent and necessary contribution to the field.
At about 200 pages, this richly detailed book by Pascale Sablan, award-winning architect and CEO of Adjaye Associates, presents an anthology of diverse designers who have reshaped the built environment.
The book features essays, project case studies and a much-needed deep dive into architectural typologies, spanning residential, institutional and master planning.
Sablan, a millennial architect from New York, has spent her career advocating for equity and inclusion in architecture.
'Women and designers of color play a crucial role in realizing many of the world's greatest architectural projects, yet our recognition is still significantly lacking,' she rightfully states.
Through this book, she seeks to correct that oversight, offering an expansive look at how diverse perspectives have long shaped the field.
The book highlights 40 groundbreaking US-based and international projects, emphasizing themes of dignity, sustainability and social justice.
It also explores architecture's historical role in systemic injustices such as redlining and housing discrimination while illustrating how inclusive design can lead to meaningful change.
'When I started this career, I had no idea how many women and people of color were behind the iconic buildings that I have come to know and love,' she states.
Blending insightful essays, case studies, and profiles of 47 architects and designers from diverse backgrounds, 'Greatness' underscores how architecture can serve as a tool for empowerment.
The featured architects tackle some of the industry's most pressing challenges, including housing injustice, environmental sustainability and community development. She ensures that some of these vital voices are finally highlighted.
While not a comprehensive list, the book serves as a crucial guide, urging readers to recognize these architects as the 'greats' she sees them to be.
Released during Black History Month in the US, 'Greatness' challenges the industry to rethink who gets to be called 'great' in architecture and how we can all expand upon our definition.
Easy to read, easy to reference and easy to look at, it is a great addition to your coffee table collection.

Gaza Marks Eid Al-Adha with Looming Famine, Rising Violence

Eid Al-Adha is marked by prayers, joyful celebrations, feasts and charity. However, the people of Gaza are observing Eid amid dire humanitarian conditions and a rise in violence. Eid Al-Adha holiday began with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) announcing it would temporarily close its doors amid severe food shortages and Israeli military continuing its operation in Gaza, according to Reuters. GHF Operations Paused As Gaza's population is facing severe food shortages that put the Strip on the brink of famine, the GHF said it would suspend its work because overcrowding had made its operations 'unsafe.' On Friday, the GHF sent contradicting messages as it announced the closure of its distribution hubs in southern Gaza. Later, it said it had delivered food, before saying it had shut its doors as a precautionary measure. 'The distribution was conducted peacefully and without incident; however, it was paused due to excessive crowding that made it unsafe to proceed,' the organization said in a statement. Shooting Incidents Several shooting incidents took place in the vicinity of the GHF's operations, where the Israeli military opened fire at Palestinians while they were trying to reach the aid distribution site in southern Gaza. Early Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the Israeli military killed at least 27 people, including two women and three children, and injured others while they were heading to the GHF's aid distribution site. Similarly, on Monday morning, Israeli troops killed three Palestinians and injured dozens while they were on their way to the GHF aid distribution site in Rafah. The Israeli military also killed 31 and injured dozens of Palestinians in the same area on Sunday. According to local health authorities, more than 80 Palestinians had been killed and hundreds injured near aid distribution sites from June 1-3, 2025. GHF Distribution Mechanism The GHF is an Israeli and US-backed organization that aims to set a new mechanism for aid delivery in Gaza. This involves establishing a number of distribution sites in southern and central Gaza, where Palestinian civilians will head once a week to receive one aid package per family. The GHF cooperates with private American contractors to secure aid trucks until their arrival at the distribution sites. However, the organization has faced sharp criticism as the UN and other humanitarian organization refused to cooperate with it, accusing it of serving Israel's military objectives which include displacing Palestinians. Famine Warnings On March 2, 2025, Israel imposed a total blockade on aid entry into Gaza to ramp up pressure on Hamas to release the remaining hostages. Under growing international pressure, Israel in mid-May allowed limited aid delivery to resume under UN supervision. However, UN officials denounced the Israeli restrictions that obstruct the distribution of the much-needed aid and have made the situation in Gaza 'catastrophic.' On Thursday, the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned that the people of Gaza are expected to experience acute food insecurity by September, with around 500,000 people facing extreme food deprivation, leading to malnutrition and starvation. 'This means the risk of famine is really touching the whole of the Gaza Strip,' the director of the FAO office of emergencies and resilience, Rein Paulson, said in an interview, as quoted by the Associated Press (AP). Israeli Strikes In a separate development, Israeli strikes continued on the Gaza Strip, claiming the lives of 16 Palestinians in northern Gaza, according to local health authorities. The residents of Gaza said they had to hold Eid Al-Adha prayers amid rubble, under the Israeli bombing and shelling. The Israeli military issued new evacuation orders on Friday for areas in and around Gaza City, warning of imminent intensive operations in response to rockets fired at Israel from the area, according to Reuters. Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced that four of its soldiers were killed in a booby-trapped building in Khan Younis, bringing the army death toll to 8 since the start of June. ‘This is the Final Solution': Norman Finkelstein clashes with Israeli general over Gaza

To die of hunger... or die trying to get food? The UN has described the new aid delivery regime in Gaza as a 'death trap.' Over consecutive days - civilians have been killed waiting for food aid. Israel, with the backing of the US, is delivering aid through a private company - bypassing traditional humanitarian groups. For days, Gazans have reported being shot at as they scramble to access the limited supplies. Israel denies firing at innocent civilians. It's the latest escalation in a seemingly endless humanitarian crisis. And it could just be the last straw for some of Israel's supporters. Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert - who we'll hear from shortly - now believes Israel is committing war crimes. The senseless deaths are adding to already mounting pressure on Israel... There's a distinct change in some of the language we're hearing - even from Tel Aviv's staunchest allies. The rhetoric - and public opinion - is certainly starting to change. On Counterpoints we'll ask: If Israel is weaponizing food and if that was always part of its war plan? Will this force the US to renew a push for peace? And if we can expect more Israeli allies to speak out?

Russia Urges US, UK to Restrain Ukraine after Attacks on Bombers

Moscow said on Wednesday that military options were "on the table" for its response to Ukrainian attacks deep inside Russia and accused the West of being involved in them, Reuters reported. Russia also urged the United States and Britain to restrain Kyiv after the attacks, which Ukrainian officials have lauded as showing Kyiv can still fight back after more than three years of war. British and US officials have said they had no prior knowledge of Ukraine's attacks on Russian nuclear-capable long-range bombers at military bases over the weekend. Ukraine also tried to blow up a rail and road link with Crimea on Tuesday, and Russia says Kyiv blew up a highway bridge over a passenger train late on Saturday. US President Donald Trump's Ukraine envoy said the risk of escalation from the war "going way up" after the attacks on the nuclear-capable bombers. A week earlier, Trump rebuked Russian President Vladimir Putin over a fierce aerial attack on Ukraine. "We urge London and Washington to react in such a way as to stop further escalation," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who oversees relations with the US and arms control, was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency. "All options are on the table," Ryabkov said, when asked what Russia's response to Ukraine's attacks would be. "This is a question for our military." Russia and the US together hold about 88% of all nuclear weapons. Asked whether Russia thought the West was involved in the recent attacks, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the West supplied weapons, gave target coordinates, refused to condemn such attacks and actively incited them. "These are several areas that prove the fact of the involvement, both direct and indirect, and the guilt of the West for the terrorist attacks that are taking place against civilians and civilian infrastructure facilities by the Kyiv regime," Zakharova said. Kyiv has not commented on the bridge attacks. Each side has accused the other of carrying out acts of terrorism during the conflict and each blames the other for a lack of progress at peace talks. Trump was not informed in advance of Ukraine's drone attacks on Russia, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday. A British government official said the government was not informed ahead of time.
