Pakistan navy thwarted Indian aircraft carrier threat during latest standoff — PM
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday an Indian aircraft carrier that had reached as close as 400 nautical miles to Pakistan retreated after realizing the country's navy was prepared to 'respond vigorously' during a military confrontation between the two nations earlier this month.

On Monday, the Pakistani PM visited the Naval Dockyard in Karachi to pay tribute to the Pakistan navy for its role in Operation Bunyan-um Marsoos, the code-name given by the Pakistan army to what it calls a retaliatory strike launched in the early hours of May 10 after India attacked at least three of its air bases with missiles.
'The Prime Minister particularly praised the Navy's critical role in safeguarding sea lines of communication and ensuring the uninterrupted flow of maritime trade, while maintaining absolute maritime sovereignty through a layered and assured seaward defense,' state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported.
In his address, Sharif said Indian aircraft carrier Vikrant had retreated after 'sensing the preparedness' of the Pakistan Navy.
During the latest standoff, the Indian navy had deployed at least 36 warships which included an INS Vikrant-led Carrier Battle Group including 8 to 10 warships
'Indian Navy's [aircraft carrier] Vikrant had reached close to Pakistan by 400 nautical miles, but after suffering immense losses inflicted by Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Army [in May 10 retaliatory strikes], Vikrant retreated, sensing the preparedness of the Pakistan Navy to respond vigorously,' Sharif said.
India's navy is believed to hold significant advantage over Pakistan's, boasting a larger fleet and more diverse capabilities. India's navy includes aircraft carriers, destroyers, and a substantial submarine fleet, allowing it to project power beyond regional waters, whereas Pakistan's navy is primarily focused on coastal defense in the Arabian Sea.
India's navy comprises over 293 vessels, including two aircraft carriers, 13 destroyers, and 18 submarines, making it a 'blue-water' navy with the ability to operate in global maritime zones. INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant give India the capability for air power projection and anti-ship operations.
Pakistan's navy operates 121 ships, with no aircraft carriers or destroyers.

In meeting with US lawmakers, Pakistani delegation says Delhi resisting dialogue with Islamabad
KARACHI: A Pakistani delegation led by former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari met a group of American lawmakers on Thursday, telling them that India is consistently resisting dialogue to resolve bilateral issues. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif set up the delegation last month, tasking it to present Pakistan's point of view regarding the country's conflict with India last month. India and Pakistan last month engaged in four days of fighting, striking each other with missiles, drones, artillery and fighter jets before Washington brokered a ceasefire on May 10. 'Pakistan remains committed to peace, but sadly, India consistently resists dialogue,' Bhutto Zardari was quoted as saying by Bilawal House, his official residence. The former foreign minister criticized India's decision to hold in abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty, a decades-old water-sharing agreement with Pakistan. 'India has weaponized water, endangering the future of not only Pakistan but the entire region,' he said. He warned that if Indian hostility is not curbed in time, it could 'seriously jeopardize regional peace.' The Pakistani politician reaffirmed his country's desire for constructive engagement based on mutual respect and peaceful resolution of disputes, the statement said. 'The members of Congress welcomed the delegation, listened carefully to Pakistan's concerns, and expressed willingness to strengthen bilateral engagement and regional stability,' the statement concluded. Tensions between the arch-rivals began on April 22 when militants attacked a resort in Indian-administered Kashmir's Pahalgam area, killing 26 tourists. India blamed Pakistan for supporting militants involved in the attack, a charge Pakistan vehemently denied and called for a transparent, international probe into the incident. Pakistan and India, bitter rivals, have fought two out of three wars over the disputed territory of Kashmir that they both claim in full but govern only parts of. India accuses Pakistan of supporting militants in the part of Kashmir it administers. Islamabad denies the allegation and says it extends only diplomatic and moral support to the people of Kashmir.

Pakistan PM embarks on two-day Saudi Arabia visit to bolster bilateral ties
ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif departed on Thursday on a two-day official visit to Saudi Arabia at the invitation of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman to strengthen bilateral relations between the two longstanding allies, the premier's office said. During his stay on June 5 and 6, Sharif will celebrate Eid Al-Adha in the Kingdom and hold a bilateral meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The discussions are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment and regional security. 'The two leaders will discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields, including trade and investment, welfare of the Muslim Ummah, and regional peace and security,' according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office. Sharif is also expected to express gratitude to the Saudi leadership for their role in de-escalating recent tensions between Pakistan and India. Last month, following the worst military confrontation between India and Pakistan in decades, Saudi Arabia, along with other Gulf nations, played a key role in mediating between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, helping to avert a potential war. The visit also comes amid deepening economic ties between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. In recent months, the two countries have signed multiple agreements aimed at boosting bilateral trade and investment. Notably, Saudi Arabia has committed to a $5 billion investment package to support Pakistan's economy, which has been grappling with a balance of payments crisis. Pakistan PM orders tighter polio surveillance after northern Gilgit-Baltistan reports first case
ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered that polio immunization efforts be enhanced after the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region reported its first case of the virus in seven years this week, the premier's office said on Thursday. Polio is a paralyzing disease that has no cure. Multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine and completion of the routine vaccination schedule for all children under the age of 5 are essential to provide children high immunity against the disease. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries in the world where polio remains endemic. Pakistan has reported 11 polio cases so far this year, compared to 74 cases in 2024. Earlier this week, the poliovirus was detected in a child from the district of Diamer in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, according to the country's polio eradication program. 'The prime minister expressed deep concern over the recent reported polio case in Diamer,' Sharif's office said in a statement. 'Union Councils where more polio cases are being reported and immunization is not good should be closely monitored.' Pakistan concluded a nationwide polio vaccination campaign on June 1, the third this year. The drive had aimed to inoculate 45 million children under the age of five across 159 districts of the country. In the early 1990s, Pakistan reported around 20,000 polio cases annually. By 2018, that number had dropped to just eight. In 2021, only one case was reported, and six cases were recorded in 2023. Pakistan's polio eradication program began in 1994, but efforts have been repeatedly undermined by misinformation and resistance from some religious hard-liners. These groups claim that immunization is a foreign plot to sterilize Muslim children or a cover for Western espionage. Militant groups have also frequently attacked polio vaccination teams and the security personnel assigned to protect them. A Pakistani police officer was killed on May 27 when gunmen opened fire on a team of health workers conducting a door-to-door polio vaccination campaign in the southwestern Balochistan province during the latest inoculation drive.
