Rafal Nadal says he is content in retirement and hasn't picked up a racket in 6 months
He also was OK with realizing soon after walking away that he no longer felt the competitive streak that helped carry him to 22 Grand Slam titles. That total includes a remarkable 14 at the French Open, more championships than any other person won at one of his sport's major tournaments — and the site of a celebration of his excellence on Sunday in its main stadium.
When he would play golf, for example, 'I didn't care if I lose, if I win, if I play well, if I play bad. Was a strange feeling for me, and not funny. I didn't like to experience that, being honest, because I understand (sports differently).'
Not surprisingly, though, that period passed. It makes sense that the drive that pushed him for two decades to succeed, to strive to get better, to keep accumulating accolades would not quite disappear forever.
'I am competitive again,' he pronounced with a smile. 'Just to let you know, I am enjoying my daily competitions when I play golf and when I do things, but I think in a much nicer way.'
Now he invests time in his family — his wife and 2-year-old son were at Court Philippe-Chatrier for Sunday's moving tribute — and business interests, including his tennis academy, a hotel company and a nutritional supplements company, plus his charitable foundation.
'I am discovering,' said Nadal, who turns 39 on June 3, 'what really motivates me for this new life.'
And as for tennis?
'I am having fun. I don't miss much tennis, because I feel that I (gave) all what I had. I arrive at the day of today with the peace that I can't be on court. My body doesn't allow me to be on court. So that's all. I am (at) peace,' he continued. 'I did all (that) I could to have the best career possible, and now I am enjoying this new phase of my life, that I am sure going to be less exciting than the tennis career.'
He went on to explain that the adrenaline sports produces is 'impossible to find in other things in life,' but that doesn't mean he will be any less happy.
As singular as his achievements in Paris were — not just the 14 trophies, first at age 18 in 2005 and last at age 36 in 2022, but also the career record of 112-4 — Nadal does not find it inconceivable that someone else could come along and produce similar success.
He might be the only one who thinks that way. After all, no man in the professional era, which began in 1968, even won half as many championships at Roland-Garros; Bjorn Borg is next on the list with six.
'I really feel that if I did it — I don't consider myself somebody very, very special — another one is going to come and going to achieve that, too,' he said. 'A lot of things need to happen in your favor to make that happen, because you need a long career, because you can't have a lot of injuries, even if I had (my share). ... You can have injuries, you can have very, very bad days. So you need some luck, too.'

But the teams that eventually make it to October still have some work to do before they get there. With that in mind… Here is one realistic goal that each of our top 10 teams should pursue from now until the end of the regular season, courtesy of Yahoo Sports' Jordan Shusterman. Brewers — Secure the best record in baseball: This, of course, should be the bare minimum expectation given Milwaukee's magical summer. More important is finding their way back to the NLCS or beyond for the first time since 2018. Phillies — Enter October with momentum: Since reaching the World Series in 2022, Philly's season has ended one round earlier each successive year. They've got the roster to reverse that trend; now they just need to go out and do it. Dodgers — Figure out who their 13 best pitchers are: On paper, this pitching staff is as loaded as it gets. But sifting through injuries and inconsistency to find the right mix of arms will be of paramount importance as they seek to repeat as champions. Blue Jays — Win the AL East for the first time in a decade: They've come a long way since last year's last-place finish and this spring's contract talks with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Now all that's left is to secure what should be a raucous home-field advantage north of the border. Cubs — Restore juggernaut status as an offense: The North Siders' success in October will hinge on whether or not they can find the offensive firepower that carried them in the first few months of the season. Tigers — Secure a top-two seed in the AL: Despite recent stumbles, Detroit still figures to win its first division crown since 2014. But this is a team that would seriously benefit from earning a bye to ensure its top arms are rested and ready to roll. Astros — Reclaim full-blown villain status: The laundry list of injuries, most recently to closer Josh Hader, can't be overlooked. But with Carlos Correa back in the fold they look far more intimidating and far more familiar as the league's ultimate heel. Padres — Chase down the Dodgers: It's been almost 20 years since their last division title, but here they are on the doorstep of finally slaying the "dragon up the freeway," holding sole possession of first place after winning their fifth straight game on Wednesday. Mariners — Win the AL West for the first time since 2001: After winning an MLB record-tying 116 games, they vanished from the postseason for two decades. Now, just one game behind the Astros, is this the year they finally reclaim the crown? Red Sox — Finish ahead of the Yankees and make the playoffs: Missing the playoffs would make this the first time since the 90's that Boston failed to reach October in four consecutive seasons. For a team that spends this much money, that's simply inexcusable. Teams 11-30 📸 Through the lens Udine, Italy — Paris Saint-Germain staged a thrilling comeback against Tottenham to win their first UEFA Super Cup, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to tie the game before finishing the job in penalties. Another trophy: PSG have won the Super Cup, Champions League, Coupe de France, Ligue 1 and Trophée des Champions this year, with their only blemish coming in last month's Club World Cup final loss to Chelsea. Anaheim — Shohei Ohtani had his longest outing of the season (4.1 IP), struck out seven and tripled against his former team. But the Dodgers still fell to the Angels for their fourth straight loss, and for the first time since April 27 the defending champs are out of first place. Coming up: The Dodgers are off today, but this weekend they host a massive series against the Padres, who've taken advantage of their prolonged slide (10-14 since the break) to leapfrog them into first. Now it's just showing off. Business is booming: The average NFL team is worth $7.13 billion — a staggering sum and a 20% increase over last year according to Sportico's annual valuations, released on Wednesday. The Cowboys again lead the way at $12.8 billion. But after becoming the first team to cross the $10 billion threshold last year they're now joined by two others in the Rams ($10.43B) and Giants ($10.25B). 13 teams are worth at least $7 billion and even the last-place Bengals are worth $5.5 billion — more than every NHL team, all but four MLB teams and all but seven NBA teams. Big picture: If a 20% increase in a year sounds big (which it most certainly should), consider this: the average NFL franchise has more than doubled in value just since 2021.
