Located on the banks of the Ganga Canal, Chhota Haridwar has become a popular alternative for those who are unable to visit Haridwar due to time or resource constraints
Ganga Dussehra is one of the most sacred festivals in Hinduism, celebrated to mark the descent of the River Ganga to Earth. On this day, devotees across the country take a holy dip in the Ganga, as it is believed to wash away sins committed unknowingly and bring good fortune.
The festival is observed every year on the Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha. This year, it will be celebrated on June 5.
If you are in Delhi-NCR and think you need to go to Haridwar or Prayagraj to participate, you may be overlooking a significant nearby spot. Chhota Haridwar in Muradnagar is just 35 km away from Delhi's Anand Vihar.
Located on the banks of the Ganga Canal, this religious spot in Muradnagar mirrors the spiritual ambiance of Haridwar. It has become a popular alternative for those unable to travel to Haridwar due to time or resource constraints.
India's first semi-high-speed Namo Bharat train has made travel quicker and more convenient for people across Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut. Travelling to Chhota Haridwar from the Delhi-NCR region is now faster than ever.
The Namo Bharat currently operates on a 55-km route between New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and Meerut South. Muradnagar Namo Bharat station lies along this route, and Chhota Haridwar is just a short walk away.
With Namo Bharat, the distance from Anand Vihar, Delhi to Chhota Haridwar can be covered in just 22–23 minutes. The fare for a standard coach from Anand Vihar to Muradnagar is Rs 80, while the premium coach costs Rs 95.
From Ghaziabad, which is only 18 km away, the journey to Muradnagar takes about 12 minutes, and the fare is just Rs 40 in standard class. Travelling from Meerut South (Bhudbaral) to Muradnagar, approximately 23 km, takes around 13–14 minutes with a fare of Rs 60.
Ideal For Devotees Ahead Of Ganga Dussehra
A large number of devotees visit Chhota Haridwar to collect Gangajal, take a holy dip, and perform rituals. With Ganga Dussehra approaching, this spot offers a convenient option for spiritual seekers.
The Namo Bharat train not only makes religious travel faster but also ensures a safe and comfortable journey. The train features air-conditioned coaches, cushioned seats, mobile charging points, clean interiors, and enhanced security, making it suitable for women, elderly passengers, and children.
Boost To Local Economy and Religious Tourism
The launch of the Namo Bharat train has given a significant boost to religious tourism and local businesses around Muradnagar. Small traders and shopkeepers are benefiting from the increased footfall of devotees and tourists.
Currently, Namo Bharat runs between 11 stations on its 55-km stretch from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South. Metro services from Meerut South are expected to start soon, covering stations like Partapur, Rithani, Shatabdi Nagar, Brahmapuri, Meerut Central, Bhaisali, Begumpul, MES Colony, Daurli, Meerut North, Modipuram, and Modipuram Depot. Notably, Meerut Central, Bhaisali, and Begumpul will be underground stations.
Namo Bharat will also run at a top speed of 160 km/h from four stations in Meerut: Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram.
Modern Facilities at Stations
All Namo Bharat stations offer free drinking water, toilets, and daily newspapers in both English and Hindi. Diaper-changing stations are available in washrooms for mothers travelling with infants. Service lanes below the stations allow cabs and private vehicles to drop passengers near the entry and exit points, reducing congestion and the risk of accidents.
Each station is equipped with CCTV cameras, and additional surveillance is in place inside all train coaches to ensure passenger safety. These features will also be available at the upcoming Meerut Metro stations.

Haridwar: Devotees throng Har Ki Pauri on Nirjala Ekadashi for holy Ganga dip

Haridwar (Uttarakhand) [India], June 6 (ANI): A large number of devotees gathered at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar on Friday to take a holy dip in the Ganga River on the occasion of Nirjala Ekadashi, considered one of the most sacred days in the Hindu calendar. Pilgrims from across the country reached the banks of the Ganga to take part in the royal bath and offer prayers to Ganga Mata. The event came a day after the celebration of Ganga Dussehra, leading to heavy footfall on both days as devotees offered prayers, performed bathing rituals, and chanted religious hymns. A devotee, Vipul Sharma, said, 'It is the eleventh of Ekadashi, and its bath is a royal bath. You can see how many faiths people are associated with this thing, such as our religion, Hinduism or Sanatan Dharma, and I say that Sanatan Dharma is not such a big religion for everyone.' Another devotee, Bhaisaheb Roshan Lal, called it a special day for the Hindu community. Lal said, 'Today is the bath of Ekadashi. This is a special bath. Shiva's grace is such a pleasure. There is a good system of administration, and everything is good. All is good. There is safety somewhere, so there is so much excitement to go.' Pilgrims travelled from various parts of India to participate in the spiritual event. Hetal, a devotee from Rajkot, said, 'This is our Hinduism, so it is our faith. I feel so good. I came. I saw this for the first time today. I saw it in the video, but I liked it very much. We went to the bath in that other valley. Just happiness, peace and good health.' Jinal, another devotee from Ahmedabad, shared her experience and said, 'The atmosphere is very spiritual. It is very religious., The energy is coming from the crowd. It is just happiness and peace.' Local authorities had deployed security personnel and implemented crowd control measures to ensure that the rituals were carried out smoothly and safely. Nirjala Ekadashi falls on the eleventh lunar day of the waxing phase in the Hindu month of Jyeshtha. The name 'Nirjala' means 'without water,' referring to the strict fast observed on this day. Among the 24 Ekadashis observed in a year, Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most austere and spiritually significant. (ANI)
