With NHL stars again eligible for Olympic participation for the first time since 2014, Hockey Canada's brass made a strong statement by selecting a veteran-heavy group with high-end skill and championship experience.
Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid and fellow Canadian legend and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby lead the list.
McDavid is fresh off another 100-point campaign and is currently guiding the Edmonton Oilers through the Stanley Cup Final while facing a must-win Game 6 on Tuesday night.
Crosby, meanwhile, remains a cornerstone of Canada's international legacy, returning for his third Olympics after winning gold in both 2010 and 2014.
Also named were Colorado Avalanche duo Nathan MacKinnon at forward and Cale Makar on the blue line.

MacKinnon posted 116 points this past season and led all players in scoring at the 4 Nations tournament.
Makar, meanwhile, just captured his second Norris Trophy with a career-high 92 points last season.

Rounding up the first six players named to the roster are Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brayden Point and Florida Panthers forward Sam Reinhart.
Point earned his spot with another 40-goal season and two Stanley Cup rings to his name in the last five years.
Reinhart, who replaced Brad Marchand from last year's preliminary list, has been key to Florida's third consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Final and was a Selke Trophy nominee this season.

The Olympic tournament will begin on February 11, 2026, with the gold medal game set for February 22. Canada will compete in Group A alongside Czechia, Switzerland, and France.

NWSL expansion team, the Denver Summit, acquires its first player in a trade with the Pride

The Denver Summit have acquired forward Ally Watt in a trade with the Orlando Pride, making her the expansion club's first player. The Summit will start play in the National Women's Soccer League next season. As part of the deal announced Wednesday, Watt was loaned back to the Pride for the rest of this season. Watt, a 28-year-old native of Colorado Springs, has been with the Pride since 2022, making 73 appearances across all competitions with the club and scoring eight goals with six assists. She also had stints with the North Carolina Courage and the Seattle Reign. The announcement comes a week after the Summit announced that Nick Cushing would be the team's head coach. 'It's an incredible honor to be the first player in Denver Summit FC history,' Watt said in a statement Wednesday. 'As a Coloradan, this opportunity means so much to me, not just to play the game I love, but to represent the place that shaped who I am in front of the people that mean the most to me. I'm proud to help lay the foundation for something special alongside Nick Cushing, and I can't wait to be a part of building a team that this city can be proud of.' Watt was signed by Denver through the 2028 season. Orlando receives $75,000 in expansion allocation money and $35,500 in intra-league transfer funds as part of the trade. 'Ally has been an exceptional contributor to our organization, and when the opportunity arose to facilitate her return to Colorado — where she can help establish professional women's soccer in her home state — we knew it was the right decision,' said Pride sporting director Haley Carter. 'The loan structure through 2025 allows us to retain her valuable contributions on the field as we pursue our championship goals, while also enabling her to be part of Denver's inaugural NWSL season." The Pride are the defending NWSL champions. The Summit and the expansion Boston Legacy will bring the NWSL to 16 teams next year. ___ AP soccer:

Minnesota Twins won't be sold, will remain under control of Pohlad family

The owners of the Minnesota Twins said Wednesday they will not explore a sale and the team will remain under family control. The Pohlad family instead says they have agreed in principle to take on minority investment from two different groups, just 10 months after announcing plans to sell the franchise. "After a detailed and robust process, our family will remain the principal owner of the Minnesota Twins," the family said in the statement. "To strengthen the club in a rapidly evolving sports landscape – one that demands strong partnerships, fresh ideas, and long-term vision – we are in the process of adding two significant limited partnership groups, each of whom will bring a wealth of experience and share our family values." The family has owned the team since 1984, when Carl Pohlad bought the team for $44 million from Calvin Griffith, and the Pohlad children inherited the Twins upon his death in 2009. Pohlad's grandson, Joe, is the team's executive chair. The Twins are valued at $1.5 billion, according to Forbes Magazine, which ranks 23rd out of 30 MLB teams. Their 2025 payroll sits at $142,762,022, with their highest-paid player this season being pitcher Pablo López, who is making $21.75 million. Minnesota is 56-63 and currently in fourth place in the American League Central. At the trade deadline, the team went into fire sale mode, trading 10 players, including shortstop Carlos Correa, who was sent to the Houston Astros, and relief pitcher Jhoan Duran, who was shipped off to the Philadelphia Phillies. Jets' Sauce Gardner sits out practice with sore calf, status for preseason game vs. Giants uncertain

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner sat out the team's joint practice with the Giants on Wednesday because of a sore calf. Gardner participated in practice Tuesday at the Jets' facility in Florham Park but wasn't spotted during the teams' session at the Giants' facility Wednesday. 'Sauce wasn't out (there) today,' coach Aaron Glenn said after practice. 'He had some calf soreness. We'll continue to evaluate him and see exactly where he's at.' Gardner has been one of the Jets' best players since being drafted fourth overall out of Cincinnati in 2022. He was the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year and was an All-Pro selection in his first two NFL seasons. The 24-year-old Gardner had a slightly off season, by his standards, last year but is still considered one of the league's elite cornerbacks. Gardner signed a four-year, $120.4 million extension through the 2030 season, making him the NFL's highest-paid player at his position. He also is the focal point of a new-look secondary for the Jets, who have Gardner and free-agent signing Brandon Stephens at cornerback, with Michael Carter as the nickelback and free-agent signing Andre Cisco and Tony Adams at safety. The Jets don't have another full practice before their preseason game against the Giants on Saturday night. Glenn declined to say whether he would play his starters in that game — 'The plan is the plan,' is all he would divulge — so it's unclear if Gardner would participate even if healthy. Typically, teams play their starters for a quarter or a half in the second game, using it as a warmup for the regular season while backups typically play the final preseason game. Rookie quarterback Brady Cook, an undrafted free agent out of Missouri, was back on the field after leaving practice Tuesday with an ankle injury after someone stepped on his foot. He didn't participate in team drills. 'Held him out, but I anticipate him playing this week,' Glenn said. 'So that's good.' Cook is one of just three healthy quarterbacks on the Jets' roster, with starter Justin Fields and Adrian Martinez. Glenn announced Tuesday that veteran backup Tyrod Taylor had arthroscopic knee surgery and wouldn't play the rest of the preseason. ___ AP NFL: Dennis Waszak Jr., The Associated Press
