The Waterfront review – this Dawson's Creek for grownups is perfect summer nonsense

The Guardian4 hours ago

Do you miss Dawson's Creek now that you're all grown up? Kevin Williamson sees you. And he has reinvented his late-90s/early-00s tale of a close knit community round a watery area for an adult market. Not adult-adult, you understand – we're talking drug-running and crumbling family empire rather than sauce – but the main ingredients of his first TV hit are all here. Namely, masses of plot and some lightly sketched characters to keep it moving swiftly enough that nobody has time to stop and say 'Hang on, fellas – I simply don't believe a word of this!' Those of us who sat through several young women choosing Dawson over Pacey are only here for the second part of the phrase 'credible drama'.
The Buckleys and their fleet have long dominated the small fishing town of Havenport, North Carolina. They are rich and troubled. More so the latter as they become less of the former because business is getting tougher and mighty patriarch Harlan (Holt McCallany, charismatic, humourless) took his hand off the tiller to have two heart attacks and left his inadequate son Cane (Jake Weary, uncharismatic, humourless) to run things for a bit. Cane decided the best way to do this was to start shifting illegal narcotics for wodges of cash and an unseen gangster called Owen. Alas, we open with a set of Cane's smuggling crewmen being offed by a gang of armed men, and Owen's $10m shipment going missing. Cane asks his cousin Lynette (Bethany DeZelle), at whatever the nautical equivalent of the DVLA, North Carolinian office is, to amend some paperwork to say that he sold the murder boat three months ago. I am sure this is a foolproof cover and that nothing will escalate.
The Drug Enforcement Administration descends – but the family is so steeped in internecine warfare that they hardly notice. Harlan returns to the office to beat the living daylights out of Cane and advise the clan that the problem lies not in drug smuggling but in not drug smuggling enough. They need to cut the middle men out of the picture and take hold of the supply line themselves. OK, grizzled boomer.
Cane's mother, Belle (Maria Bello), is secretly cutting a deal to sell a stretch of Buckley land to a developer. But! This stretch of land is sacred to the memory of Harlan's late mother, and he won't be grizzly pleased when he finds out. And! The developer wants to develop Belle's site too, if ya know what I mean. She is considering the offer.
Meanwhile! Cane's sister Bree (Supergirl's Melissa Benoist, flying here too – albeit metaphorically – and, like Bello, improving the show with every scene she is in) has been given a job in the family bar and restaurant after rehab for alcohol and pill addiction. She is keen to get back to proper work but the Buckleys don't think she is ready. She has also lost custody of her son, Diller (Brady Hepner) to her cruddy ex-husband and is trying to repair their relationship on the boy's weekend visits. Unfortunately, Diller is unforgiving of her catalogue of sins – which I suspect goes back to naming him 'Diller' – and progress is slow. Harlan gives Diller a job in the restaurant, putting Bree in near-permanent breach of a court order to stay 300 feet away from anyone she has nomenclaturally abused since infancy, so, you know, that's a worry.
Meanwhile, again! On top of the multimillion dollar drug debt, Cane is tormented by the return of his first love/high school sweetheart/soulmate, who is a totally differently pretty brunette from his wife and also married. His wife is called Peyton (Danielle Campbell) and his former girlfriend is called Jenna (Humberly González). That's really all there is to say about them.
Twists and reveals come thick and fast. You'll never guess who Bree is seeing on the down-low, or where they met! You'll never guess which character played by an established character actor whose part initially seems too small for him turns out to be a double-crossing major player in the whole caboodle! You'll never guess how efficient and uninspiring the script is! You'll never guess which issues it nods towards so you don't feel like you're entirely wasting your time! Toxic masculinity, generational trauma, the father-son bond, class divides and the problems of the one per cent in a coastal location? Oh, you CAN guess – well done!
You get the idea. It is escapist summer nonsense with – God, I hope – no pretensions to being otherwise. Dive into the adult creek and wallow in nostalgia as the waves of absurdity sweep towards shore.
The Waterfront is on Netflix now.

David Beckham shows off Inter Miami's incredible new stadium as 25,000-seater ‘new home' takes shape

DAVID BECKHAM has shown off the incredible progress of the new Inter Miami stadium. Dubbed Miami Freedom Park, the £747million ($1billion) project is scheduled to open in 2026. 7 7 Construction began as early as March and has seen rapid progress. Club owner Beckham took to Instagram to provide an update on the work following his team's Club World Cup opener against Al Ahly, which they drew 0-0. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star was pictured on the building site inside the concrete shell of the stadium. New knight Becks was seen with his hands raised out wide as he wore a white shirt, tan shorts and an Inter Miami hat. The foundations of the ground could be seen behind him, along with construction equipment and a few workers holding a discussion. In the far distance, a grandstand could be seen part-built, doubtless the first look at what the 25,000-capacity stadium will look like when finished. The second picture on the slide showed Beckham alongside his child, Cruz, and wife, Victoria, as they stood in front of a model of what the entire area will look like when the work is finished. Another picture showed Beckham with his arm around Cruz while they wore high-vis jackets and black hard hats. Beckham, 50, captioned his post: "Our beautiful new home is taking shape. For me, Jorge & Jose Mas our dream for our club is becoming a reality. Miami Freedom Park… coming soon." Victoria replied under it saying: "It is going to be incredible!!!! We are all so proud!!!! Xxxx." The venue itself is located right near Miami airport. The project was green-lit by the city of Miami following a referendum in which it got 60 per cent approval. Freedom Park will be 100 per cent privately funded, while Inter Miami will pay 57 per cent over fair market value in rent to the city. It's claimed that rent alone from the 131-acre development area will bring the city $2.67bn over the term of the lease. This land will feature a 58-acre public park - the largest activated park in Miami - and will feature youth athletic fields for the community, entertainment-based retail and attractions, restaurants, hotels, shops, office space and an entertainment venue to host major international stars in addition to concerts that will take place in the stadium. The club says more than 15,000 jobs will be created both directly and indirectly through the project, which should be complete by the end of the year. This all comes with the backdrop of a huge rift in the Beckham family with Brooklyn buying a £10.5m property in Hollywood last week with his wife, Nicola Peltz, as revealed by The Sun. News of Brooklyn's house purchase comes after he snubbed his dad on Father's Day, which Nicola being accused of driving a wedge in the family and 'effectively holding him hostage'. 7 7 7 WATCH EVERY MATCH OF THE CLUB WORLD CUP 2025 LIVE ON DAZN What do David Beckham's tattoos mean? Vigil held to remember Minnesota politician and husband shot dead at home

Hundreds of people gathered outside Minnesota's Capitol on Wednesday evening for a vigil to remember a prominent state lawmaker and her husband who were gunned down at their home. As a brass quintet from the Minnesota Orchestra played, Governor Tim Walz wiped away tears and comforted attendees at the gathering for former House speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were killed early on Saturday in the northern Minneapolis suburbs. Advertisement Colin Hortman, the Hortmans' son, embraced Mr Walz and laid a photo of his parents on a memorial. The memorial, which sprang up outside the Capitol after the killings, features flowers, American flags, photos and sticky notes with such messages as 'Thank you for always believing in me and in Minnesota' and 'We got this from here. Thank you for everything'. Around the gathering, there was a heavy police presence, with law enforcement blocking off streets leading up to the Capitol and state troopers standing guard. Advertisement The event did not include any speeches and attendees were instructed not to bring signs of any kind. Vance Boelter, the man charged in federal and state court with killing the Hortmans, is also accused of shooting another Democratic lawmaker, Senator John Hoffman, and his wife, Yvette, at their home a few miles away in Champlin. They survived and are recovering. Boelter's attorneys have declined to comment on the charges. Mrs Hortman had served as the top House Democratic leader since 2017, and six years as speaker, starting in 2019. Advertisement Melissa Hortman was killed on Saturday (Nikolas Liepins/AP/PA) Under a power-sharing deal after the 2024 election left the House tied, her title became speaker emerita and Republican representative Lisa Demuth became speaker. Mr Walz has described her as his closest political ally and 'the most consequential speaker in state history'. The Hortmans were alumni of the University of Minnesota, which held a memorial gathering on the Minneapolis campus. Rebecca Cunningham, the university's president, spoke during the event about the grief and outrage people are grappling with along with questions about how things got to this point. Advertisement 'I don't have the answers to these questions but I know that finding answers starts with the coming together in community as we are today,' she said. Funeral information for the Hortmans has not yet been announced.
