Vigil held to remember Minnesota politician and husband shot dead at home
As a brass quintet from the Minnesota Orchestra played, Governor Tim Walz wiped away tears and comforted attendees at the gathering for former House speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were killed early on Saturday in the northern Minneapolis suburbs.

Colin Hortman, the Hortmans' son, embraced Mr Walz and laid a photo of his parents on a memorial.
The memorial, which sprang up outside the Capitol after the killings, features flowers, American flags, photos and sticky notes with such messages as 'Thank you for always believing in me and in Minnesota' and 'We got this from here. Thank you for everything'.

The vigil also included a Native American drum circle, a string quartet and the crowd singing Amazing Grace.
Around the gathering, there was a heavy police presence, with law enforcement blocking off streets leading up to the Capitol and state troopers standing guard.

The event did not include any speeches and attendees were instructed not to bring signs of any kind.
Vance Boelter, the man charged in federal and state court with killing the Hortmans, is also accused of shooting another Democratic lawmaker, Senator John Hoffman, and his wife, Yvette, at their home a few miles away in Champlin. They survived and are recovering.
Boelter's attorneys have declined to comment on the charges.
Mrs Hortman had served as the top House Democratic leader since 2017, and six years as speaker, starting in 2019.

Under a power-sharing deal after the 2024 election left the House tied, her title became speaker emerita and Republican representative Lisa Demuth became speaker.
Mr Walz has described her as his closest political ally and 'the most consequential speaker in state history'.
The Hortmans were alumni of the University of Minnesota, which held a memorial gathering on the Minneapolis campus.
Rebecca Cunningham, the university's president, spoke during the event about the grief and outrage people are grappling with along with questions about how things got to this point.

'I don't have the answers to these questions but I know that finding answers starts with the coming together in community as we are today,' she said.
Funeral information for the Hortmans has not yet been announced.

Mastodon rocker Brent Hinds dead at 51 after horror Atlanta motorcycle crash
Brent Hinds, the former singer-guitarist for the Grammy-winning heavy metal band Mastodon, has died in a motorcycle crash in Atlanta aged 51. Hinds, who left Mastodon after 25 years in March 2025, was killed on Wednesday when his Harley-Davidson collided with a BMW SUV around 11.35pm per Atlanta News Firs t. The Atlanta Police Department said in a report the driver of the SUV failed to yield while making a turn - with Hinds found 'unresponsive' at the scene and later pronounced dead by medics. 'The male appeared to be operating a Harley Davidson during the time of collision. Medical personnel pronounced the male deceased' the report states. 'The other driver involved, a female who occupied a BMW SUV remained on scene. The APD Accident Investigations Unit responded to the scene to determine the circumstances. 'Preliminary investigation indicates the male was traveling West on Boulevard. The female operating the BMW SUV failed to yield while turning left and collided into the male victim who was operating the Harley-Davidson. The investigation remains active at this time.' The band paid an emotional tribute to Hinds in an Instagram statement which read: 'We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident. 'We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we've shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. 'Our hearts are with Brent's family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone's privacy during this difficult time. RIP Brent.' Mastodon had three albums rise into the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart and two that topped the Rock Album chart - Emperor of Sand in 2017 and Once More ´round the Sun in 2014. Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000 with bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor. Mastodon´s third studio album, 2006´s Blood Mountain, was their first to reach the Top 40, peaking at No. 32 on the Billboard 200. Hinds left the band in March 2025. No reason for the departure was given. The band said they had 'mutually decided to part ways,' but comments made by Hinds on Instagram indicated a rocky relationship with the members of his former band. 'We´re deeply proud of and beyond grateful for the music and history we´ve shared and we wish him nothing but success and happiness in his future endeavors,' the band said at the time. Mastodon earned six Grammy Award nominations, winning one in 2017 for best metal performance for Sultan's Curse from the album Emperor of Sand. Rolling Stone magazine listed Mastodon's 2011 album The Hunter among its best off the year, saying the band had 'streamlined their molten thrash into a taut thwump that doesn´t pull back one bit on their natural complexity of innate weirdness.' Hinds was due to tour Europe later this year with Fiend Without a Face, a band that was once a side project during his years with Mastodon.

JD Vance has revealed his closest buddies in the Trump administration. During an interview with Fox News Wednesday, Vance was asked about his closest allies, but initially seemed hesitant to respond, insisting he had "a lot" of good friends at work. He explained his hesitance by saying that 'the weird thing is, you say it's one person and then fundamentally that's an insult to other people." Eventually though he revealed his best friends at work are Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. 'We are very close, we were close in the Senate, he's been a great friend of mine, I think he's doing a great job,' Vance said of Rubio. And the feeling appears mutual. When Fox News host and presidential daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, asked Rubio last month whether he'd consider running for the White House again, he dodged and heaped praise onto Vance. 'I think JD Vance would be a great nominee," Rubio said. "I think he's doing a great job as vice president. He's a close friend.' Vance has previously said that he spends time with Rubio outside of the White House, and described him as 'more impressive in private than he is in public' at the American Compass gala in June, according to Real Clear Politics. President Trump also appears to have noticed the close friendship, suggesting that Vance and Rubio could run on the same ticket for the White House next time around. 'I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form,' Trump said. On Wednesday, Vance also spoke about his friendship with Hegseth, explaining they had just dined together at a burger joint in Washington. The trio have also found themselves in hot water together during 'Signalgate' earlier this year. The group chat included Hegseth, Vance, Rubio, along with other top defense officials. Since then, the Secretary of Defense has fired three of his top aides in relation to a Pentagon leak investigation over the disclosure of classified materials. But on Wednesday, Vance insisted that Hegseth is doing a good job. 'I think he's doing a great job as Secretary of Defense,' Vance told Fox News. The vice president went on to suggest that Hegseth's controversies were a concerted effort by the "DC swamp" to undermine him. 'The DC Swamp tried to destroy Pete Hegseth unlike anybody in the administration,' Vance added. 'Whenever I see the worst people in the world trying to tear a guy down that makes me think he's on our side.'

The NFL has increased security at its offices following a shooting last month at a Manhattan building by a gunman authorities say was targeting league headquarters. 'We are working with the building and the other tenants within the building on building security,' NFL executive Jeff Miller said Thursday. The league previously recommended enhanced security measures at team and league facilities. The recommendations will be reviewed at a special league meeting on Aug. 26. NFL employees are back in their offices after working remotely in the weeks following the shooting that killed four people and injured a league employee. Investigators believe Shane Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, was trying to get to the NFL offices after shooting several people in the building's lobby, then another in a 33rd-floor office on July 28, before he killed himself, authorities said. Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested that he had a grievance against the NFL over a claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease that can be diagnosed only by examining the brain after a person dies. Tamura played high school football in California a decade ago but never in the NFL. ___
