BBC News06-03-2025

The shirt worn by the winning goalscorer in the 1952 FA Cup final has been sold at auction for £7,000.Newcastle United's George Robledo scored the winning goal against Arsenal at Wembley Stadium, securing the club the trophy for the sixth time. The simple black and white striped shirt, which features a large collar, cuffed sleeves and the club's badge, was sold to a private bidder. It was one of about 50 items linked to the club which were sold by auctioneers Graham Budd.
Before the sale, the auction house's head of sporting memorabilia David Convery estimated the shirt could have fetched between £7,000 and £10,000.He described the cotton top as looking like a "nightshirt" and said it would have been heavy for the players to wear if it rained.
Robledo was born in Chile and was the first South American to play professional football in Britain. He set the record for the most goals scored by an overseas player in English football, which stood for almost 50 years.
The oldest shirt in the auction was worn by Robert Clark in the 1927-28 season and sold for £6,000.Other notable sales included a replica Stewart Barrowclough shirt from the 1976 League Cup Final, which went for £2,600. Mr Convery said it was a "rare shirt" and it had short sleeves despite Barrowclough wearing long sleeves on the day.The newest shirt to go under the hammer was worn by current star Alexander Isak against Tottenham Hotspur on 4 January. It was sold for £650.

FIFA Club World Cup supercomputer predicts unlikely winner to scoop £97m prize

Manchester City, Real Madrid and PSG are among the favourites to claim the newly revamped Club World Cup but one of their fellow European sides has been tipped to land the trophy A supercomputer has claimed that Benfica will stun Manchester City in the final of FIFA's Club World Cup and secure a surprise triumph this summer. A host of the world's elite clubs will head to the United States for the newly expanded tournament, which has an impressive list of previous winners. Benfica have been tipped to land the award despite not even winning their league this year, nor have they made the semi-finals in the Champions League era. ‌ The Portuguese club find themselves in Group C with Boca Juniors, Bayern Munich and Auckland City. Pep Guardiola's side meanwhile, who won the Club World Cup after they claimed Champions League glory in 2023, claim several scalps en route to the final. ‌ However they come up short despite beating Real Madrid, who now have Trent Alexander-Arnold in their ranks, and recently beaten finalists Inter Milan. Lionel Messi 's Inter Miami, one of the tournament's biggest draws, will suffer an early exit in the group stages of the tournament, finishing rock bottom in Group A which also contained Al Ahly, Porto and Palmeiras. The latter turn out to be the best performing South American side, making it to the quarter-finals before they narrowly lose to Bayern. One of the major casualties of the tournament is the new European champions PSG. Despite their stellar season Luis Enrique's side fail to even make the last eight. They've been put into a group with Botafogo, Atletico Madrid and the Seattle Sounders. Chelsea, the other representative from England, make the last 16 but that is where their journey ends. They're in a group with Flamengo, LAFC and Tunisian side Esperance de Tunis, but the 2021 Champions League winners failed to make major inroads. The winner of the tournament, which has been expanded for the first time and will take a month to complete, includes a £97million prize pot as FIFA looks to take the competition to the next level. It will feature a host of the world's leading lights including Messi and Kylian Mbappe - but no Barcelona means no Lamine Yamal. The Club World Cup Supercomputer was utilised by BoyleSports. It works based on a probability model with the supercomputer estimating the outcome of each fixture based on a team's factors like league position and form.

England starting lineup tonight as major changes made after Andorra debacle

England eked out a win against minnows Andorra on Saturday, with Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel set to ring the changes in the wake of that farcical performance Ruthless Thomas Tuchel is set to make seven changes to his England line-up for Tuesday's friendly against Sengal. The moves come after Saturday's farcical win over Andorra, in which the Three Lions could manage just one goal against the minnows. England were booed off at both half-time and at the final whistle by their own fans for their performance. They needed a second-half strike from captain Harry Kane to dispatch their opponents, ranked 153rd in the world. ‌ The Three Lions now have a break from World Cup qualifying, instead taking on Senegal in a friendly. The game will be hosted at Nottingham Forest's City Ground, with FA chiefs keen to have the national team move around the country. ‌ While the game isn't competitive, Tuchel will be taking Tuesday's game seriously, given he has a limited amount of time with the team. The German only took charge in January with a brief to win next year's World Cup. There are only a handful of international breaks left before that tournament, limiting Tuchel's time with the squad. And he will now show his ruthless side by making seven changes to his starting line-up. Only captain Kane, Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham and Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, who caught the eye against Andorra, will keep their places in the team. The changes start in goal, with Dean Henderson handed a start over No.1 Jordan Pickford. Henderson is being rewarded after starring as Crystal Palace won the FA Cup, with Tuchel keen to get a full assessment of his options between the sticks. At right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold will come into the team after the experiment of playing Curtis Jones there failed. Alexander-Arnold has joined Madrid this summer, but struggled to earn a regular place under Tuchel's predecessor Gareth Southgate. ‌ Konsa will be partnered at centre-back by Chelsea's Levi Colwill, with the 22-year-old having been on the bench for all three of Tuchel's matches so far. Colwill was a regular in the Premier League for the Blues as they secured a top five finish. At left-back, Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly will be given the chance to impress. The 18-year-old was the breakout player of the season and scored on his England debut against Albania back in March. In midfield, Bellingham will take up one of the deeper-lying roles in Tuchel's 4-2-3-1 formation. He will be partnered by Arsenal Player of the Year Declan Rice, who was surprisingly snubbed in favour of Jordan Henderson against Andorra. ‌ Madueke will continue on the right wing after his impressive performance against Andorra. Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White will be granted a homecoming as Tuchel studies his options in the No.10 role. And fresh from scoring the winner in the FA Cup final, Eberechi Eze is set to be handed a start on the left wing. That just leaves space for captain Kane, who is set to start over Ivan Toney up-front.
