Bhimavaram: The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Vishnu Institute of Technology (Autonomous) (VITB) here in collaboration with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University College of Engineering, JNTU-Kakinada organised week-long Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on 'Modern Trends and Technologies in Mechanical Engineering' from June 16 to 20.
Distinguished speakers including Dr M Ravi Sankar (IIT Tirupati), Dr P Vamsi Krishna (NIT Warangal), Dr T Babu Rao and Dr T Karthikeya Sharma (NIT-AP), Dr SVAR Sastry (HBTU Kanpur), Dr P Sudhakar Rao (NITTTR Chandigarh), M Sridhar (TCS Engg Services), M Lakshmi Kanth (BHEL Vizag) delivered expert sessions on advanced topics such as Machine Learning in Metal Deposition, Compact Heat Exchangers, Hybrid Machining, AI in Manufacturing and Environmental Sustainability.
The FDP was jointly coordinated by Prof Dr D Linga Raju, UCE, JNTUK and Dr K Anupama Francy, Associate Professor, VITB, reflecting the strong academic partnership between the two institutions.
Principal Dr M Venu and Vice-Principal Prof M Srilakshmi of VITB also attended the valedictory session.

Visakhapatnam: To enhance knowledge and skills of faculty members in quantum computing and enable them to address complex real-world challenges through the design and development of quantum machine learning (QML) algorithms, Andhra University is going to organise a five-day faculty development programme (FDP) on Quantum Computing from August 28. The FDP , titled 'quantum computing insights for academics – concepts, applications and tools', aims to equip faculty members and researchers with foundational, advanced knowledge in the emerging field of quantum computing. Ahead of the poster launch, Andhra University Vice Chancellor GP Raja Sekhar stated that the platform would familiarise faculty members and research scholars with quantum computing applications such as surveillance, healthcare, geology, cyber security, emergency management and remote sensing. Through the FDP, participants will gain substantial knowledge of quantum computing and its potential in solving real-world problems. They will be equipped to design and implement quantum machine learning (QML) algorithms for academic and practical applications. The FDP programme that equips faculty and research scholars with practical insights into quantum computing and quantum machine learning (QML), will continue till September 1. Participants will receive guidance from leading experts, including professors from IITs, NITs, IIITs, scientists from NISER Bhubaneswar, and professionals from various industries.

Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), Bharat Dynamics, Bharat Electronics (BEL), BEML, and other defence stocks will be in focus on Wednesday after the government approved key military projects worth around ₹ 67,000 crore. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved various proposals aimed at boosting India's military capabilities, including procurement of long endurance drones, mountain radars and missile systems at a cost of around ₹ 67,000 crore. For the Indian Army, Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) was accorded for the procurement of Thermal Imager-based Driver Night Sight for BMP. This would enhance night driving capability of BMP and provide higher mobility and operational advantage to the Mechanised Infantry, Ministry of Defence said in a release. For the Indian Navy, AoN was accorded for the procurement of Compact Autonomous Surface Craft, BrahMos Fire Control System & Launchers and Upgradation of BARAK-1 Point Defence Missile System. For the Indian Air Force, DAC approved the procurement of Mountain Radars and Upgradation of SAKSHAM/SPYDER Weapon System, it added. AoN was also accorded for procurement of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs) for the three Services. In addition, DAC has also accorded AoN for sustenance of C-17 and C-130J fleets and comprehensive annual maintenance contract of S-400 Long Range Air Defence Missile System. Analysts believe defence stocks such as HAL, BEL, BDL, Solar Industries, Data Patterns (India), MIDHANI, among others may tend to benefit from the contracts. 'Defence companies likely to benefit from the ₹ 67,000 crore DAC clearance include Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), given their strong alignment with the approved project domains such as radars, drones, and air defence systems. In the short term, markets are expected to respond positively to this news,' said Prashanth Tapse, Sr VP Research – Research Analyst at Mehta Equities. However, in the long term, he believes the real value will hinge on timely execution and sustained government support to the domestic defence ecosystem.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have created a high-performance composite material using local bamboo and biodegradable innovation addresses the need for sustainable alternatives to plastic, especially in the automotive new material, made from Bambusa tulda -- a fast-growing bamboo species native to Northeast India -- shows excellent strength, thermal stability, low water absorption, and It offers a green solution for manufacturing vehicle dashboards, seat backs, and door FOR PERFORMANCE AND SUSTAINABILITYLed by Dr Poonam Kumari from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the research explored four composite formulations by reinforcing bamboo fibres with petroleum-based and bio-based treatment of the fibres improved compatibility and durability, and the materials were tested across 17 performance team applied Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) methods to assess all samples. The top-performing variant combined bamboo fibres with a bio-based epoxy called composite offered the best balance of mechanical strength, thermal resistance, and minimal moisture ALTERNATIVE FOR MULTIPLE INDUSTRIESPriced at Rs 4300 per kilogram, the bamboo composite provides a viable, sustainable alternative to traditional materials used in industries such as furniture, electronics, packaging and, most notably, automotive manufacturing.'Developed composite can be used for designing components/parts in consumer electronics, automobiles, aerospace, sustainable building materials etc. The product will replace wood/iron/plastic components and will have similar cost and lead to fulfil SGD goals (7,8 and 9).
