Jasprit Bumrah absent? No worries! Mohammed Siraj showed once again that India can count on him
had his hands on his head when Jamie Smith nearly played around a ball angled into the stumps. That was Siraj's last delivery of a spell that brought India roaring back into the final Test here at the Oval on Friday.

India's assistant coach
had on Thursday described
's absence as a 'complex situation'. However, Bumrah's absence usually simplifies things for Siraj. He becomes the undisputed leader of the pace attack and more often than not, he delivers. Two days before the fourth Test in Manchester, Siraj's stellar record in the absence of Bumrah was even highlighted during a media briefing. 'I feel proud. Even in 2023, I was India's top wickettaker when Bumrah wasn't around.
That responsibility brings the best out of me,' Siraj had said in response.

As the discussion hit a lighter note, he beamed in embarrassment and said, 'Don't say that I am better off without Bumrah.'
India desperately needed a leader with the ball on Thursday. Siraj turned up with all his passion and experience. He bowled eight overs on the trot in the afternoon session. The fierce fighter in him doesn't let him throw in the towel. That zeal can be infectious. As Siraj got the rhythm going, it rubbed off on the others — there was a marked difference in the way
and Akash Deep bowled.

Siraj usually derives inspiration from people around him. He was in awe of
' beastly spell at Lord's. Siraj, in full flight, is no less a beast. 'There's no shame in learning from the opposition. We're all trying to win for our team,' Siraj had said. In one particular spell on Friday afternoon, he channelled all his qualities to deliver a spell of 3/35 in eight overs of probing seam bowling.
He couldn't wait to get back into the action after tea.

He didn't care for the end he was going to bowl from. He just took the ball and decided to let it rip. Gus Atkinson, England's star with the ball, had said on Thursday that the England bowlers could have bowled a lot into the stumps. 'It's a hard ground because it is too bouncy to challenge the stumps,' Atkinson had warned. Siraj adjusted and got the length a lot fuller in the second session.
Siraj did just that to get a string of LBWs and set the template for his fellow pacers.
No one can ever fault Siraj for the effort he puts in. At times, it may appear he is rapidly burning himself out. Yet, he is in contention to be the only pacer from either side to have played all five Tests till the completion of the match. His competition Chris Woakes was ruled out on the second morning owing to a shoulder injury.
For all the effort he has put in through his Test career, the five-wicket hauls have not come as frequently as Siraj would have liked. 'Yeah, it's frustrating. You keep beating the bat and nothing happens. But I trust my process. I believe God is watching. If not today, the wickets will come tomorrow,' Siraj had said.

‘I was never the villain, I was made into one': Oval pitch curator who irked Gautam Gambhir after epic India vs England encounter
India came back from a seemingly hopeless situation to win the Oval Test and draw the five-match series against England 2-2. It marked the end of a series that was filled with incidents. While most of it happened on the field, India head coach Gautam Gambhir's argument with Oval pitch curator Lee Fortis before the start of the fifth Test was easily the most prominent off-field flare-up over the course of the series. Gambhir firing angry words at Fortis is what went viral first and the Indian head coach received some criticism for his choice of words to describe the latter's profession. However, details later emerged about what it is that irked Gambhir so much and that led to Fortis being accused of favouring England at best and having a colonial mindset towards the Indians at worst. The track that Fortis and his ground staff prepared, and maintained admirably in a Test that was frequently interrupted by rain, coughed up a thriller, though, with India winning it by just six runs – their lowest margin of victory by runs in Test cricket. 'Well, I was never the villain, I was made into one,' Fortis is quoted as saying by PTI. 'Hope you guys enjoyed the show and the atmosphere was like the IPL. It was a great game.' Indian head coaches Gautam Gambhir and Sitanshu Kotak were asked by Fortis, through a messenger, to stay 2.5 metres away from the playing surface. He also shouted at the Indian support staff to not take a 'cooler' to the ground. Batting coach Kotak, who was close to the action and played the pacifier when an animated Gambhir was talking to Fortis, gave details about the net session altercation. 'When we went to see the pitch, we were asked by someone to keep a 2.5-metre distance. This was surprising. The Test would be in a few days and we were wearing joggers. So it felt a bit odd. We all have been on the ground enough, we have played so much cricket. Curators are possessive about the ground and the square but they need to understand that they are speaking to highly skilled and intelligent people.' Kotak said.

Mohammed Siraj Responds To Asaduddin Owaisi's ' Poora Khol Diye Pasha ' Compliment After England Heroics
Mohammed Siraj did the star turn for India vs England in the highly contested Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The pacer bowled tirelessly to scalp 23 wickets and become the top wicket-taker. But more importantly, Siraj was crucial in moping up the tail of England on the final day of the fifth Test to ensure that India win the match by 6 runs and draw the series. After the terrific show, Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had a pure Hyderabadi response to India's big Test win against England at The Oval and pacer Mohammed Siraj's five-wicket haul. Congratulating the fellow Hyderabadi, Mr Owaisi posted on X, "Always a winner @mdsirajofficial! As we say in Hyderabadi, poora khol diye Pasha!" The phrase loosely means that the pacer was at the top of his game. Now, Siraj has responded to the praise. He wrote on X: "Thank you so much sir Always cheering for me." Thank you so much sir always cheering for me. — Mohammed Siraj (@mdsirajofficial) August 6, 2025 Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali feels India pacer Mohammed Siraj's big heart and his steadfast refusal to back down in the face of adversity sets him apart from the rest and makes him a difficult proposition for any batter. With 23 scalps to his name, Siraj emerged as the highest wicket-taker in the just-concluded Test tour of England, playing a key role in India holding the hosts to a 2-2 draw in an intensely fought five-match series. "Siraj has been outstanding in the England series. The energy, aggression, and consistency he brings with the ball is world-class. He's matured into a genuine match-winner for India, and it's always a challenge for batsmen facing him," said Moeen in a release from GFS Developments. "What impresses me most is his ability to control the ball. He's got a big heart and never backs down - that's what makes him so special. Credit to him for the impact he's making," he added. Siraj played all five Tests against England and bowled a staggering 185.3 overs.
