SUPP leader urges deeper appreciation of Sarawak's unique status in Malaysia

KUCHING (July 21): Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Engkilili branch chief Kua Jack Seng has called for a deeper appreciation of Sarawak's unique status in Malaysia, cautioning against narratives that disregard the state's constitutional rights and historical standing within the Federation.
Responding to an article titled 'We Are All Malaysians' by Democratic Action Party's (DAP) Wong Lee Ting, Kua said while the message of unity is laudable, it risks downplaying Sarawak's position as a founding partner of Malaysia.
'Let us be very clear — Sarawak did not join Malaysia in 1963. We formed Malaysia together with Malaya, North Borneo (Sabah), and Singapore as equal founding partners under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),' said Kua, who is also a political secretary to the Premier, in a statement.
According to him, the safeguards enshrined in MA63, including Sarawak's control over immigration, land, education, language policy, and taxation, are rights and not privileges.
'While we proudly identify as Malaysians, that identity must be built on mutual respect and constitutional equality — not imposed uniformity or historical revisionism,' Kua said.
He criticised Wong's call to 'let go of labels' and 'not divide ourselves' as idealistic and potentially harmful if used to dismiss Sarawak's legitimate aspirations.
'Portraying the assertion of a Sarawakian identity as divisive is misleading,' he said.
Kua argued that Sarawak's demands are neither excessive nor unreasonable but necessary corrections to long-standing imbalances in the Federation.
'For too long, Sarawak has contributed richly to the national economy, especially through oil and gas, while receiving disproportionately little in return. Our people are rightfully asking — where is the fairness? Where is the respect?'
Kua reiterated several key demands, including the full implementation of MA63 with the restored autonomy in education, healthcare, fiscal policy, and natural resources; the reinstatement of one-third parliamentary representation for Sabah and Sarawak as originally agreed; a greater share and control over oil and gas revenues; and the protection of Sarawak's multicultural and multireligious identity.
He warned that West Malaysian-style extremism has no place in Sarawak's tolerant society.
'These are essential corrections to decades of centralisation and neglect. If we are truly 'all Malaysians,' then let the spirit of Malaysia be one of equality, not dominance,' he said.
Kua emphasised that Sarawakians are not anti-Malaysia but want a Malaysia that respects their rights, history, and identity.
'True unity is not about erasing identities or asking Sarawakians to compromise endlessly. It is about acknowledging past wrongs and committing to fairness and federal balance,' he added.
'Yes, we are all Malaysians. But never forget — we are also Sarawakians. And that really matters to a true Sarawakian.' Kua Jack Seng lead malaysia status

Govt launches 'Anak Merdeka Malaysia' initiative to boost patriotic spirit

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Unity Ministry, through the National Archives of Malaysia (ANM), has introduced the "Anak Merdeka Malaysia" initiative to ignite patriotic spirit in conjunction with this year's National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM) celebrations. It said the programme also aims to honour Malaysians born on two of the nation's most historic dates – August 31 and September 16 – as a symbol of the country's struggle, independence and unity. Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said in the statement that the initiative is not merely about celebrating birthdays, but also about recognising the profound meaning those dates hold in strengthening national identity and patriotism. "Through 'Anak Merdeka Malaysia', we are not only celebrating their birthdays, but also uniting the voices of the people under one national identity. "This is the true face of Malaysia Madani – a nation that honours its history, nurtures hope, and unites its people," said Aaron. According to the ministry, registration is now open to all Malaysian citizens who share a birthday on either of these two historic dates, regardless of background, age or ethnicity. The statement added that those who register will be given the special opportunity to take part in various activities during the official national-level celebrations, receive commemorative gifts, and be honoured as symbolic national heroes representing the spirit of Malaysian unity. "The ministry calls on all Malaysians to help spread this information to family members, friends and local communities, so that more people can be celebrated as part of the Merdeka legacy. "This is our chance as citizens to strengthen patriotism through inclusive and meaningful participation," it said in a statement yesterday. – Bernama

AI will reshape Malaysia's job market, says Human Resources Minister

Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. – Bernama GEORGE TOWN: Artificial Intelligence (AI) will reshape Malaysia's job market and create thousands of new opportunities, says Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. He said AI would not replace workers but instead create new roles and redefine existing ones in the country's job landscape. "We have to move on from what I call 'worry to strategy'. "The way forward is to ensure that our workers are equipped with the right skills to adapt to the changes in current and future economic trends. "As Malaysia accelerates its transition into a digital economy, people should shed the fear that AI will lead to widespread job losses," he told reporters after launching the 52nd ARTDO International conference held at the Eastern and Oriental Hotel in George Town on Monday (July 28). Sim was referring to a study commissioned by his ministry on the impact of AI and digitalisation in Malaysia, which revealed that 600,000 existing jobs are "at risk". He said the evidence shows that AI would transform jobs, not eliminate them. "Those who adapt and upskill will find more opportunities, not fewer," he said. Sim said a national labour market study by his ministry revealed that up to 60% of employers across 10 key economic sectors expect AI to lead to job creation, especially in roles needing advanced digital skills. "The study, which included extensive inputs from industry stakeholders, is now sharing national policy on workforce readiness. "AI is changing how we work, not eliminating the need for work. "The question is not whether AI will take over, but whether we are preparing Malaysians to work with AI," he said. When asked by the press to elaborate on the new job opportunities created by AI, Sim said new roles like "prompt engineers" is an emerging opportunity. "We still need someone to input data into the AI and someone still needs to check the feedback produced by AI. "The ministry is actively responding to these changes by expanding training and upskilling initiatives through platforms such as MyMahir, a national skills-matching portal," he said. He said under the ministry's initiative, over 33 government-run industrial training institutes and various private providers were now offering AI and digital literacy courses. "These courses are aimed at equipping the workforce with relevant competencies in an increasingly automated landscape. "With the right upskilling, workers can transition into higher-value roles rather than being displaced. "AI literacy must become mainstream. Not everyone will become an AI engineer, but basic familiarity with how AI works will soon be essential across nearly every profession," he said. Sim said his ministry is working to integrate AI ethics and governance into public awareness, recognising that responsible deployment was just as important as technical know-how. "During the recent National Training Week, between 40% and 50% of offerings had AI components, including modules on ethical usage, data protection and digital responsibility. "We want Malaysians to not only use AI but to use it responsibly. "Understanding the social, legal and moral implications of AI is a national priority. "We are building not just a skilled workforce, but a trusted digital society," he said.
