Ai2 Unveils MolmoAct, a New Class of AI Model That Reasons in 3D Space

Business Wire3 days ago
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Ai2 (The Allen Institute for AI) today announced the release of MolmoAct 7B, a breakthrough embodied AI model that brings the intelligence of state of the art AI models into the physical world. Instead of reasoning through language and converting that into movement, MolmoAct actually sees its surroundings, understands the relationships between space, movement and time, and plans its movements accordingly. It does this by generating visual reasoning tokens that transform 2D image inputs into 3D spatial plans—enabling robots to navigate the physical world with greater intelligence and control.
'With MolmoAct, we're laying the groundwork for a new era of AI—one that can reason and navigate the world in ways more aligned with human thinking, and collaborate with us safely and effectively.' -Ali Farhadi, CEO of Ai2

While spatial reasoning isn't new, most modern systems rely on closed, end-to-end architectures trained on massive proprietary datasets. These models are difficult to reproduce, expensive to scale, and often operate as opaque black boxes. MolmoAct offers a fundamentally different approach: it's trained entirely on open data, designed for transparency, and built for real-world generalization. Its step-by-step visual reasoning traces make it easy to preview what a robot plans to do and intuitively steer its behavior in real time as conditions change.
'Embodied AI needs a new foundation that prioritizes reasoning, transparency, and openness,' said Ali Farhadi, CEO of Ai2. 'With MolmoAct, we're not just releasing a model; we're laying the groundwork for a new era of AI, bringing the intelligence of powerful AI models into the physical world. It's a step toward AI that can reason and navigate the world in ways that are more aligned with how humans do — and collaborate with us safely and effectively.'
A New Class of Model: Action Reasoning
MolmoAct is the first in a new category of AI model Ai2 is calling an Action Reasoning Model (ARM), a model that interprets high-level natural language instructions and reasons through a sequence of physical actions to carry them out in the real world. Unlike traditional end-to-end robotics models that treat tasks as a single, opaque step, ARMs interpret high-level instructions and break them down into a transparent chain of spatially grounded decisions:
3D-aware perception: grounding the robot's understanding of its environment using depth and spatial context
Visual waypoint planning: outlining a step-by-step task trajectory in image space
Action decoding: converting the plan into precise, robot-specific control commands
This layered reasoning enables MolmoAct to interpret commands like 'Sort this trash pile' not as a single step, but as a structured series of sub-tasks: recognize the scene, group objects by type, grasp them one by one, and repeat.
Built to Generalize and Trained to Scale
MolmoAct 7B, the first in its model family, was trained on a curated dataset of about 12,000 'robot episodes' from real-world environments, such as kitchens and bedrooms. These demonstrations were transformed into robot-reasoning sequences that expose how complex instructions map to grounded, goal-directed actions. Along with the model, we're releasing the MolmoAct post-training dataset containing ~12,000 distinct 'robot episodes.' Ai2 researchers spent months curating videos of robots performing actions in diverse household settings, from arranging pillows on a living room couch to putting away laundry in a bedroom.
Despite its strong performance, MolmoAct was trained with striking efficiency. It required just 18 million samples, pretraining on 256 NVIDIA H100 GPUs for about 24 hours, and fine-tuning on 64 GPUs for only two more. In contrast, many commercial models require hundreds of millions of samples and far more compute. Yet MolmoAct outperforms many of these systems on key benchmarks—including a 71.9% success rate on SimPLER—demonstrating that high-quality data and thoughtful design can outperform models trained with far more data and compute.
Understandable AI You Can Build On
Unlike most robotics models, which operate as opaque systems, MolmoAct was built for transparency. Users can preview the model's planned movements before execution, with motion trajectories overlaid on camera images. These plans can be adjusted using natural language or quick sketching corrections on a touchscreen—providing fine-grained control and enhancing safety in real-world environments like homes, hospitals, and warehouses.
True to Ai2's mission, MolmoAct is fully open-source and reproducible. Ai2 is releasing everything needed to build, run, and extend the model: training pipelines, pre- and post-training datasets, model checkpoints, and evaluation benchmarks.
MolmoAct sets a new standard for what embodied AI should look like—safe, interpretable, adaptable, and truly open. Ai2 will continue expanding its testing across both simulated and real-world environments, with the goal of enabling more capable and collaborative AI systems.

Nvidia, National Science Foundation Partner to Create Open AI Models for US Scientists

The US National Science Foundation (NSF) has secured significant investments from the private and public sectors for its Open Multimodal AI Infrastructure (OMAI) project. The Allen Institute for AI, known as Ai2, is leading the project, which will provide cutting-edge AI models for scientists nationwide. Nvidia has already committed $77 million to the new project. The key to the OMAI project is that the large language models (LLMs) produced will be open source, freeing researchers from potential ties to private interests. At this stage of AI development, the hardware costs of training LLMs are outside the budgets of many research facilities. Those LLMs are generally not open source. (Even OpenAI isn't entirely open source, despite its name.) Ai2 plans to fill that gap with the OMAI project by producing LLMs geared towards literature and scientific data. 'These tools will enable America's researchers and developers to process and analyze research faster, generate code and visualizations, and connect new insights to past discoveries, accelerating breakthroughs across materials science, biology, energy, and more,' the NSF wrote in a statement. Ai2 was founded by the late Paul Allen, a Microsoft co-founder who donated considerable sums to further science research. The investment in Ai2's OMAI project gives Ai2 a massive boost in funding and hardware. Credit: Nvidia. Nvidia isn't the only organization contributing to the OMAI project. The NSF is providing $75 million, bringing the initial investment to $152 million. The Trump administration recently created an AI Action Plan, which prioritizes the US's 'global dominance in artificial intelligence.' 'Bringing AI into scientific research has been a game changer,' said Brian Stone of the NSF. 'NSF is proud to partner with Nvidia to equip America's scientists with the tools to accelerate breakthroughs. These investments are not just about enabling innovation; they are about securing US global leadership in science and technology and tackling challenges once thought impossible.' The $152 million will also help the OMAI project support universities in Hawai'i, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Washington. The project already has partnerships with Cirrascale Cloud Services and SuperMicro. Cirrascale will handle hardware infrastructure management. As you'd expect from a hardware company, Nvidia is providing its HGX B300 systems, which are loaded with Nvidia Blackwell chips and designed for AI uses. According to Nvidia, the HGX B300 features 8 Blackwell Ultra SXM GPUs and up to 2.3TB of memory. The OMAI project hasn't indicated yet how many HGX B300 systems will be involved.

Statement from CUPE on Air Canada's Request for Binding Arbitration

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Air Canada Component of CUPE has respectfully urged Employment Minister Patty Hajdu not to intervene pursuant to section 107 of the Canada Labour Code thereby permitting collective bargaining to continue and allowing the parties to negotiate a resolution. The integrity of the collective bargaining process depends on allowing the parties to reach a resolution through free and fair negotiations, without undue interference. Rather than continuing to negotiate in good faith, Air Canada appears to have anticipated government intervention and has opted to suspend meaningful discussions, contrary to its legal obligation to bargain in good faith. On August 11, 2025, the Union submitted a revised wage proposal, which included the withdrawal of its long-standing position seeking the same wage adjustment previously provided by Air Canada to its pilots. Despite this significant concession, Air Canada declined to meaningfully engage with the proposal and did not present a counter-proposal. On August 12, 2025, the Union made additional and substantial modifications to its wage position. The Union did not receive a response to its proposals, instead, it learned for the first time, when meeting with Minister Hajdu on August 12, 2025, that it had been rejected. On August 12, 2025, Air Canada unilaterally declared an impasse and withdrew from the bargaining table. It has not returned. On August 12, 2025, unbeknownst to the Union, the Company made an extraordinary and premature request to the Minister seeking the application of section 107 to prevent a strike or lockout. It is clear from Air Canada's submissions to the Minister that it had planned to withdraw from bargaining and ask the Minister to interfere with the bargaining process. Early on August 13, 2025, given Air Canada's refusal to bargain, the Union issued notice of its intent to commence a legal strike beginning Saturday, August 16, 2025. Within minutes, Air Canada served a lockout notice. The Union submits that the appropriate course of action is for Air Canada to return to the table and resume good faith bargaining. Accordingly, Air Canada's request for ministerial intervention under section 107 should be firmly rejected. The mere prospect of ministerial intervention has had a chilling effect on Air Canada's obligation to bargain in good faith. Air Canada's request for intervention should be denied. Such a decision would reaffirm the principles of free collective bargaining and compel Air Canada to return to the bargaining table – where it ought to be – and engage meaningfully in negotiations, where it is likely that the Parties may be able to reach an agreement.
