MAMI Mumbai Film Festival to skip a year and return in 2026 with a new logo, approach

Indian Express21-07-2025
The much-anticipated annual MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, which is organised by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), will not be held in 2025 and its revamped version will return in 2026 with a new logo and approach. Speaking to The Indian Express, festival director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur assured that the revamped version of the festival will extend more support to independent cinema and create ways of engaging with the host city, Mumbai, better.
The festival, which has been held in Mumbai since 1997, will skip a year as it is undergoing a process of being revamped 'with a dynamic vision', announced Dungarpur today. In his statement shared on social media, Dungarpur said that the festival will 'return as a premier showcase for the best of independent, regional and classic cinema from India and around the world'. He also said: 'We are working diligently to reschedule the festival and will announce the new dates for the 2026 edition as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and support.'
While speaking to The Indian Express Dungarpur said when he took over as the festival director last year they had 'limited funds' and 'a lot of things had to be sorted out'. In 2024, the festival was held at a smaller scale at Regal cinema hall and PVR, Juhu, after Jio, which was its title sponsor for several years, withdrew its support.

Maintaining that 'funding' is not the main hurdle in holding the festival this year, Dungarpur said: 'There are some past issues that need to be resolved. We are taking that time to do that. This will help us strengthen the festival. We also aim to find ways where the festival board is more effective and there is a better governance of the festival itself.'
Since Mumbai is the host of this much-loved festival, its upcoming editions should engage more with the city and be accessible to movie-lovers from all walks of life. 'The festival is meant to support independent cinema. There is a genuine feeling that very little is done for independent cinema. There is a thin line between documentary and independent cinema. We don't want to differentiate between that,' he said and added, 'We are going to push for independent cinema to be part of world competition.'
The festival, over the years, had emerged as a hub of the best of contemporary world cinema with a focus on South Asian cinema. The festival's 2026 edition will return with a new logo. 'We are excited about coming back in 2026 with these changes. We want to make it a people's event. We are in the city of Mumbai. The festival will reflect that — whether it's the logo or the way we approach the festival. We had problems. However, we are strong and we will come back stronger.'

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur: I've always dreamt of bringing a true cinematic experience to Indian audiences

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur In a culture obsessed with the next big thing, the Film Heritage Foundation director and filmmaker Shivendra Singh Dungarpur is hitting pause. He is looking back, meticulously restoring India's cinematic classics - one film at a time. As the founder of the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), he's made it his life's mission to save what's left of the country's vanishing film history - and to make sure it doesn't just sit on a dusty shelf, but lives, breathes, and plays on the big screen again. Dungarpur has tracked down lost prints, campaigned for better preservation infrastructure, and brought global attention to the Indian cinema classics. But he's also a showman at heart. Whether it's curating stunning retrospectives of Satyajit Ray and Amitabh Bachchan or introducing newly restored classics to new generations, Dungarpur understands that preservation without access is just storage. That's why his latest move is not a surprise - free weekly screenings of international classics at Mumbai's iconic Regal Cinema. No VIP access, no ticket price - just show up and watch the movies. In an interview, he spoke to us about these screenings: How did the idea of the Hitchcock retrospective and these filmmaker-focused screenings come about? Shivendra Singh Dungarpur: I've always dreamt of bringing a real cinematic experience to Indian audiences - the kind I used to witness when I traveled abroad. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Woman sells ring given by ex, then jeweler tells her 'This can't be true' Daily Sport X Undo In London or New York, you can walk into a cinema and catch films from across the entire history of cinema, with no concern about whether there are 5 or 500 people in the theatre. I wanted to recreate that access and atmosphere here. So, when we had the opportunity with Regal Cinema - a 1200-seater -I saw it as a temple of cinema. Do you pay to go to a temple? No. So, we decided these screenings must be free for the public. In London or New York, you can walk into a cinema and catch films from across the entire history of cinema, with no concern about whether there are 5 or 500 people in the theatre. And you started with Hitchcock? Shivendra Singh Dungarpur : Yes, we began with a full Hitchcock retrospective - North by Northwest, Psycho, Rear Window, Vertigo, all projected beautifully on a brand-new screen with a laser projector. People were lining up as early as 3:30 pm for a 6:30 pm show. Then we moved on to other classics, and we will be screening Kubrick. 2001: A Space Odyssey and more. The response has been overwhelming. It shows that audiences are hungry to watch classic films the way they're meant to be seen. What were the challenges in getting rights for these classics? Shivendra Singh Dungarpur: That's a huge part of the work. Studios like Warner Bros., Sony, and even European distributors control the rights. I personally reach out, negotiate licenses, and curate the programming myself. They've been supportive because they see what we're doing - screening these films for free, with great care and respect. It's a mammoth coordination effort. Shivendra Singh Dungarpur You're planning a surprise screening on August 13? Shivendra Singh Dungarpur: Yes! It's a mystery film screening - I'm not revealing the title. I told the audience, trust me, just come. I want to bring back that sense of cinematic discovery and faith in curatorship. Let's see how it goes! How has the film community responded? Shivendra Singh Dungarpur: Beautifully. Filmmakers like Vikramaditya Motwane, Sudhir Mishra, Sriram Raghavan, Rajat Kapoor, and Aditya Roy Kapur - they all stood in line like everyone else. And there are stories that touch your heart - like a Zomato delivery guy who watched a film and offered Rs 1000 in gratitude. He said, 'I can't afford multiplexes, but this changed my life.' That's the real reward - cinema for everyone. Rain-soaked and unbothered, crowds lined up to catch the screening Filmmakers like Vikramaditya Motwane, Sudhir Mishra, Sriram Raghavan, Rajat Kapoor, and Aditya Roy Kapur - they all stood in line like everyone else. The 1,200-seat auditorium is always packed to capacity at these screenings

Divyanka Tripathi Dahiya in Bigg Boss 19? Actress says, ‘Such…'

Bigg Boss 19 is just around the corner, and the suspense is already building. With Salman Khan returning as host, fans are eagerly waiting to see which celebs will enter the house. One name that keeps popping up is Divyanka Tripathi Dahiya. Her entry has sparked major curiosity — but is she really going in? Divyanka Tripathi finally broke her silence. In a short and sharp reply to Telly Talk, she said, 'Fake, they spread such news every year.' And with that one line, the speculation around her stepping into the Bigg Boss house seemed to collapse. But if the rumour was fake, why are whispers refusing to die down? So, was she even approached? According to Bigg Boss Tak on X (formerly Twitter), Divyanka was approached. Not just her — her ex, actor Sharad Malhotra, was apparently on the list too. The post read, 'EXCLUSIVE: Divyanka Tripathi Dahiya and Sharad Malhotra have been approached for Bigg Boss 19. Likely to be confirmed.' 🚨 EXCLUSIVE: Divyanka Tripathi Dahiya and Sharad Malhotra have been approached for Bigg Boss 19. Likely to be confirmed. #BiggBoss_Tak — #BiggBoss_Tak👁 (@BiggBoss_Tak) August 6, 2025 And that one post was enough to send fans into a spiral — especially those who remember the past. What's the story with Sharad and Divyanka? Their story goes way back — the Banoo Main Teri Dulhann days. The co-stars were a couple for nearly eight years before calling it quits in 2015. Both are now married to different partners — Sharad to Ripci Bhatia, and Divyanka to Vivek Dahiya. But the idea of both of them under the same roof? That's Bigg Boss gold. Who else is in the mix this season? Fan pages have thrown up a wide net of names: Rati Pandey, Hunar Hali, Apoorva Mukhija aka The Rebel Kid, Dhanashree Verma, Mr. Faisu, Bhavika Sharma, Meera Deosthale, and Sreeram Chandra. And then there's the Taarak Mehta squad: Shailesh Lodha, Gurucharan Singh, and Jennifer Mistry. Yes, you read that right. There was a bizarre buzz that a UAE-based robot named Habubu might enter the house. But a report by The Indian Express hinted that the makers might've scrapped the idea altogether. So, what's the truth? In the world of Bigg Boss, nothing's real until it's on screen. Divyanka might've said 'Fake,' but reality TV has its own rules — and sometimes, they bend the truth just right.

Rajesh Khanna once revealed the REAL REASON he didn't let Dimple Kapadia act in films after marriage: ‘Wanted a mother for my children'

Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia 's marriage was one of the most talked-about unions in Bollywood. When the two tied the knot in 1973, Dimple was just 16 years old and on the brink of stardom, having just finished filming her debut film, 'Bobby', directed by Raj Kapoor . However, shortly after the wedding, she stepped away from the limelight, putting her acting career on hold. It would be years before she returned to the big screen. Past interviews and reports reveal how Rajesh Khanna played a key role in Dimple's decision to quit acting soon after their marriage. Left acting right after 'Bobby' release 'Bobby' was released in 1973 and turned out to be a blockbuster, establishing Dimple Kapadia as a promising new face in Bollywood. But rather than capitalising on that momentum, she withdrew from the industry shortly after. The actress only appeared in that single film before disappearing from the screen for more than a decade. She chose instead to focus on her home life with Rajesh Khanna, raising their two daughters, Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna . Khanna wanted a hands-on mother As reported by The Indian Express, in a 1990 edition of Movie Magazine, Rajesh Khanna sat down with fellow superstar Amitabh Bachchan for an interview where they discussed the criticism both had faced over the years, especially the idea that they had forced their wives to give up their careers. Khanna, reflecting on the matter, admitted that he had not even seen 'Bobby' when he decided Dimple should not continue acting. 'I had no problems about my wife working. But when I married Dimple, I wanted a mother for my children. I didn't want them to be brought up by servants. And I had no idea of Dimple's talent; Bobby was still not released,' he explained. Twinkle questioned the double standard Khanna went on to share that had he seen 'Bobby' earlier and realised the extent of Dimple's talent, he may not have made the same choice. He said, 'Besides, if I knew at that moment that Bobby would prove her talent, I wouldn't have stopped her. To curb talent is cruel. By the time I saw Bobby, our first daughter was already born.' He further recalled, 'Recently, when I told one of my daughters Twinkle, that if she would like to act in a film, I would produce one for her. She said, 'You will let me act but to mummy you say no.' I said, 'For the simple reason that I am your father and not your husband.' ' Despite the challenges, Dimple stayed in the marriage for several years and devoted her time to raising Twinkle and Rinke. But eventually, the relationship crumbled, reportedly by the early 1980s, Dimple decided to walk out of the marriage. However, despite their separation, the two never officially divorced; she was by his side during tough times. Rajesh Khanna passed away in 2012, after a long battle with cancer.
