The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduate courses (NEET PG) 2025 has been postponed and will now be held on August 3, 2025, following an extension granted by the Supreme Court to the National Board of Examinations (NBE).

The exam was originally scheduled for June 15, 2025. The apex court clarified that no further extensions will be allowed.
The Supreme Court has also mandated that the exam be conducted in a single shift to ensure fairness and transparency. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) announced the postponement on May 27, 2025, after receiving the court's directive, as quoted by ANI. The postponement allows the authorities to expand test centres and upgrade infrastructure to meet the court's standards.
Supreme court's directive on single-shift examination
A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Augustine George Masih emphasised that the exam must be held in one shift, as reported by ANI. Earlier, a vacation bench consisting of Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Kumar, and NK Anjaria had rejected NBE's two-shift plan, describing it as 'arbitrariness' and saying that 'the question papers in the two shifts can never be of the same difficulty level,' according to ANI.
The court stressed the importance of providing a level playing field for all candidates and ordered the respondents to 'make necessary arrangements for holding the NEET-PG 2025 examination in one shift, duly ensuring that complete transparency is maintained and secure centres are identified and commissioned,' as quoted by ANI.
Challenges raised by NBE and court's response
The counsel for NBE informed the court that holding the exam in a single shift would require around 900 additional centres, which could not be arranged before the June 15 date.

The counsel also cited concerns about Wi-Fi infrastructure, computer security, and other logistical challenges, as reported by ANI.
Despite these arguments, the Supreme Court expressed disbelief that sufficient centres could not be found in a technologically advanced country like India. The court remarked, 'We are not ready to accept that in entire country and considering the technological advancements in this country the examining body could not find enough centres to hold the examination in one shift,' as quoted by ANI.
NBEMS's steps to ensure fairness and security
Following the Supreme Court's order, NBEMS postponed the exam to allow for necessary preparations. The board stated, 'NEET-PG 2025, scheduled to be held on 15.06.2025, has been postponed to arrange for more test centres and required infrastructure,' as reported by ANI. NBEMS also confirmed that the exam will now be conducted in a single shift, with the revised date notified in due course.
This postponement aims to uphold the integrity of the exam, which is a vital gateway for admission to postgraduate medical courses across India. Conducting the test in one shift is expected to reduce discrepancies in question paper difficulty and provide a more transparent and equitable evaluation for all candidates.

'No change in stance on crypto, concerned over risks to policy, stability'
MUMBAI: RBI said its stance on cryptocurrency remains unchanged, even as a govt panel continues to examine the issue. SC refuses to hear petition on animal sacrifice at Vishalgad
Kolhapur: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to hear an urgent petition filed against an order passed by Bombay high court allowing animal sacrifice in a dargah at Vishalgad in Kolhapur on Bakri-Eid. The counsel, comprising Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, said the high court had allowed animal sacrifice for Urs from June 8 to June 12. On June 3, a vacation bench of the high court, comprising Justices Dr Neela Gokhale and Firdosh Pooniwalla, noted that a detailed order on June 14, 2024, allowed sacrifice of animals and birds in "a closed and private area" near the Dargah and not in any "open or public place". Meanwhile, a heavy police force was deployed at Vishalgad, ahead of Bakri Eid on Saturday. Superintendent of Kolhapur Police, Yogesh Kumar Gupta, said, "A meeting has been conducted by all the stakeholders from administration like the collector's office, forest department, revenue department, animal husbandry, and police. A heavy police force, along with SRPF troop, has been deployed at the fort. We will follow the court orders. " Members of the Hindu outfits demanded, through a written statement, that the administration should not allow Urus to take place at the fort and that surveillance via CCTV cameras should be maintained at the fort. They insisted that the administration should ensure that slaughtering occurs only in areas permitted by the high court, and that too behind closed doors. The Hindu outfits also demanded immediate cancellation of the proposal to construct a slaughterhouse at Moshi village near Alandi in Pune on a 4-acre plot of land. Justice Janarthanam's moments of glory
Justice M.S. Janarthanam had, at least, experienced a few moments of glory in the last 20-odd years. After the Supreme Court, in July 2010, provided one year to Tamil Nadu to come out with justification along with quantifiable data for the continuance of the 69% reservation for Backward Classes (BC), Most Backward Classes (MBC) and Scheduled Castes (SCs)/Scheduled Tribes (STs), Justice Janarthanam, as the head of the State BC Commission, had authored a report in support of the quota scheme, as provided in the Tamil Nadu Act 45 of 1994. Exactly a year later, the then AIADMK regime, at a Cabinet meeting, adopted the findings of the report and decided that 'there cannot at all be any doubt regards the fixity of reservation of 50 per cent to Backward Classes, 18 per cent to Scheduled Castes and one per cent to Scheduled Tribes.' On the matter of 'creamy layer' among the BC and MBCs, his take was that though the 1994 law had been in existence for well over 17 years, the Lakshman Rekha line had not been crossed, warranting the application of 'creamy layer' exclusion.' This opinion was also accepted by the government. It continues to be in force. Nearly 20 years ago, when the demand was made for creating special reservation for Arunthathiyars within quota of reservation for SCs, the government had turned to Justice Janarthanam to consider it. In November 2008, he, as the head of a committee, submitted a report to the then DMK government that the representation of the Arunthathiyars in Groups A, B and C services under the State 'has been found grotesquely inadequate.' Consequently, a three percent quota came into force. for the Aruthathiyars. This has withstood the test of judicial scrutiny, says G. Santhanam, who served as Secretary of the BC, MBC and Minorities Welfare Department about 15 years ago. In 2012, he gave an opinion to the government for providing a 10.5% quota to Vanniyars within the 20%.. Though this was acted upon by the previous AIADMK regime nine years later, the Supreme Court, in April 2022, quashed the move.
