RM700 monthly salary for teachers at PAS preschools violates minimum wage rule, says Nik Nazmi

The Star5 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: A government backbencher has criticised the RM600 to RM700 monthly salaries reportedly paid to around 9,500 teachers at PAS-operated preschools, saying the wages are in clear violation of the national minimum wage law.
Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (PH-Setiawangsa) said the justification that Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam (Pasti) teachers were volunteers was unacceptable as it is not in line with regulations under the National Wages Consultative Council (Amendment) Act 2025.
"Among the attractions, besides promoting Islamic education, are the low fees.
"However, there have been many complaints about Pasti not adhering to aspects such as the syllabus and teacher's remuneration," he said during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 11).
The Human Resources Ministry had announced that the Minimum Wage Order 2024 took effect on Aug 1, 2025, setting a minimum wage of RM1,700 per month for employers with fewer than five employees not engaged in professional activities classified under the Malaysian Standard Classification of Occupations 2020.
Nik Nazmi also urged the government to consolidate existing government-run preschool services – currently managed separately by the Education Ministry, Community Development Department (Kemas) and the National Unity Department – into a more streamlined national programme.
He added that the practice also denied the teachers contributions to the Employees Provident Fund and Social Security Organisation.
In response, Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok) said that although the teachers' salaries are low, other allowances were provided despite them working only four hours a day.
Nik Nazmi also welcomed the government's plan to make pre-school compulsory at the age of five and to focus on providing facilities in rural areas.

Sabah state election: BN-PH seat allocation finalised, no overlaps, says Zahid

SHAH ALAM: The issue of seat allocation between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the upcoming Sabah state election has been finalised, with no overlapping of seats between the two coalitions, said BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He also stressed that no direct negotiations on seat allocation have been held between BN and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS). "What has been finalised is the seat arrangement between BN and PH, and we respect the cooperation between PH and GRS. "There have been no direct negotiations between BN and GRS — none at all. That's where things stand. "Any other negotiations to avoid three-cornered fights or seat overlaps are being handled behind the scenes," he told reporters. He was speaking after accompanying the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, at the opening ceremony of the 16th National Civil Defence Student Corps (Kor SISPA) Commissioning Ceremony at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) today. Earlier reports suggested that plans to form a BN-PH-GRS coalition in Sabah were faltering due to stalled seat negotiations. While such a coalition is seen as capable of avoiding vote splitting and securing a majority win, GRS's demand to contest at least 70 out of the 73 state assembly seats has raised concerns — especially in traditional BN strongholds. If GRS insists on this demand, the formation of a grand coalition may fall through. However, if GRS is willing to renegotiate, a unity government at the state level remains possible. Commenting further, Zahid acknowledged that three-cornered fights are likely in many constituencies due to the large number of new parties intending to contest in the election. "It's a case of 'the more, the merrier'. That's just the political landscape in Sabah. But what's certain is that there will be no seat overlap between BN and PH — that's already final," he said.

No BN-PH seat clashes in Sabah polls: Ahmad Zahid

Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. SHAH ALAM: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said seat distribution between BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the upcoming Sabah State Election has been finalised, with no overlaps. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, further informed that no negotiations have been held between BN and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) regarding seat distribution or cooperation for the state election, in order to respect PH. However, Ahmad Zahid anticipated that at least three-cornered contests would be unavoidable, following the likelihood of participation from other and new parties. 'What has been finalised is BN-PH, and we respect PH-GRS. There are no direct negotiations between BN and GRS. So far, any other discussions to avoid three-cornered contests or seat overlaps have been conducted behind the scenes. 'However, I feel that since there are too many new parties in Sabah wanting to contest this time, three-cornered fights will certainly be unavoidable, possibly up to eight-cornered. That is up to them, as that is the political landscape in Sabah. BN-PH has no overlapping seats,' he said. He said this when met after attending the 16th National-Level Civil Defence Student Corps (Kor Sispa) Training Completion Parade and Commissioning Ceremony here today. Ahmad Zahid was earlier reported as saying that negotiations on cooperation and seat distribution within the BN, PH, and GRS alliance for the state election were nearly completed. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Zaid chides PMX for 'appearing paralysed' when the Chinese come under siege by Akmal

THE latest wave of anti-Chinese sentiment from UMNO Youth over the flag and other manufactured outrages should have been the moment Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim or PMX, stood firm and drew a line. Instead, he appears paralysed, as if forgetting that Chinese votes carried him into Putrajaya. One stark trait of our PM is his reluctance to step into national controversies. He cherry-picks his sound bites on safer ground or not at all. On this, he has been an utter disappointment. Equally baffling is the response of Chinese parties in government. They endure repeated insults and provocations from UMNO Youth with stoic silence, yet spring instantly into outrage at PAS' religious rhetoric. This selective sensitivity betrays a warped sense of priorities. If unity is truly the goal, then surely the poison of racial hostility deserves equal, if not greater, urgency. UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh is, clearly, a member of the untouchable elite; no different from the Sabah politicians or the celebrity preachers Zamri Vinoth and Firdaus Wong. Fortunately, we have LFL's Zaid Malek as a lone voice of reason, filling the vacuum left by our PM's silence. On Thursday (Aug 14), a row of shops in Kepala Batas was forced to close early as Akmal led a 'flag inspection' rally targeting a hardware store where its owner, Feng Jin Zhen, was filmed holding the Malaysian flag upside down. Police cordoned off the area, while lawyers for Zaid attended to defend the owner from harassment. Akmal, dismissing Feng's explanation as accidental, branded the act 'traitorous' and urged supporters to join him in 'teaching' the shop owners how to hang the flag. Police are investigating under the Emblems and Names Act and related laws. Akmal gave his statement to police at the Dang Wangi IPD over last Thursday's Kepala Batas assembly. His lawyer said Akmal cooperated fully, answering about 80 questions. He is being investigated under the Sedition Act, the Penal Code (criminal intimidation), and the Communications and Multimedia Act. Afterward, Akmal addressed supporters outside the IPD, pledging full cooperation with the investigation. — Aug 16, 2025 Main photo credit: Malaysiakini
