Liverpool enter talks for £43m star as transfer 'approved' by striker
Liverpool are enjoying a busy summer transfer window and are set to finalise Florian Wirtz's move to Anfield with the German international expected to undergo his medical on Friday
Liverpool are set to move a step closer to finalising their British record transfer for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz. The Germany international is expected to begin his medical on Friday ahad of his £116million move.
It marks a quick start to the transfer window by Arne Slot's side who have seen the addition of Jeremie Frimpong. The Reds have already said goodbye to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher to Real Madrid and Brentford respectively.
And there is more to come as the Premier League champions move to sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth to strengthen their options at full-back. A new forward could be on the agenda too with Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike of interest.
There could be more exits too. Andy Robertson, Jarell Quansah and Federico Chiesa all have uncertain futures at Anfield.
Mirror Football takes a look at some of the latest Liverpool transfer news and rumours.
Liverpool enter talks
Liverpool are ready to rival Chelsea for Malick Fofana, as Lyon demand £43m for his exit. Fofana, 20, is said to favour a move to Merseyside.
According to L'Equipe, Chelsea have opened talks over a move but Liverpool have made contact with the player's new agents, after he joined Roc Nation. Manchester United are also claimed to have a strong interest in the player.
Earlier in the year, Fofana's then agent Bobo Fofana hinted Anfield could lie in the youngster's future. "The choice of heart would be Liverpool," he said earlier this year.
"He has the potential to enter the rotation, and above all, we would like to see him succeed African legends such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, and El-hadji Diouf."
Darwin approves transfer
Darwin Nunez has given his approval on a move to Napoli, according to reports in Italy.
Sky Sport Italy claim the Serie A champions Napoli have started talks to sign Nunez and the Uruguay international, 25, has 'already given the ok'. But Liverpool's demands could yet prove problematic.
The Reds have set a £59.8m asking price and want £55.6m of that to be paid up front.
Chiesa message
New Italy boss Gennaro Gattuso has revealed Federico Chiesa must find more playing time to feature in his squads going forward. The former AC Milan midfielder and manager was speaking at his unveiling having replaced Luciano Spalletti.
'In these days, I called 35 players [who did not make the squad], I spoke to everyone,' he said. 'Even Chiesa, whom I told to play consistently.
"There are players who have been out but who can lend a hand. The pitch speaks: if you do things well, the doors of the national team are open."

Mohamed Salah leads nominations for PFA Men's Player of the Year award
The Egyptian was instrumental in the Reds' Premier League title success last season, scoring 29 goals and adding 18 assists. Earlier this year he was voted footballer of the year by the Football Writers' Association, and will now be favourite to win the vote of his peers. He is joined on the shortlist by team-mate Alexis Mac Allister, Arsenal's Declan Rice, Cole Palmer of Chelsea, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes. Mac Allister was a key part of Liverpool's midfield, playing 35 times and contributing five goals and five assists. Palmer won the PFA Men's Young Player of the Year award for 2023-24 and while he arguably did not hit the same heights for the Blues last season, he still hit 15 goals and helped Chelsea win the Conference League. Rice starred in midfield for Arsenal, hitting a career-high nine goals while adding 10 assists in 52 appearances in all competitions. Isak was a key part of Newcastle's success in qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Carabao Cup, hitting 23 goals for the Magpies. Fernandes was a shining light in a largely disappointing campaign for Manchester United. He provided eight league goals and 10 assists for the Red Devils. This year's awards ceremony will be held in Manchester on August 19.

Ruben Amorim growing impatient and wants Man Utd transfers completed urgently
Man Utd's only signing of the summer so far is Matheus Cunha, with boss Ruben Amorim wanting new arrivals on board in time for the summer tour of the US in four weeks' time Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim wants his new signings on board for the club's pre-season tour of the USA in four weeks' time. United have been slow to recruit this summer, with £62.5million winger Matheus Cunha from Wolves their only signing so far, despite the need for a radical overhaul of Amorim's squad. Targets for United include Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike and Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, who played under Amorim there. Amorim is impatient for the new signings to be on the plane for United's three-game tour of the States, which sees them face West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton in the Premier Leahue Summer Series. The United boss sees the tour as the ideal environment in which new signings can fully integrate with the squad, as well as enabling them to adapt to the team's system, so they can hit the ground running when the new season starts. Amorim also wants United to offload players he does not want as quickly as possible, chiefly Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. None feature in Amorim's future plans and must be sold to help raise funds to reinvest in new signings. But United are finding it difficult to attract buyers for their outcasts, primarily because of the high wage demands of the players concerned, as well as their poor form last season, which has left clubs unwilling to meet their market valuations. Rashford wants a move to Barcelona, but there has been little progress on that front, while Napoli have expressed interest in Sancho and Garnacho, but want to pay significantly less that United are demanding. The transfer window opened from June 1 to 10, to allow teams to recruit in time for the Club World Cup, and reopened on Monday, closing on September 1. Despite United enduring their worst-ever Premier League campaign last season, finishing in 15 th place, Bruno Fernandes has been shortlisted for the PFA Players' Player of the Year award. Fernandes is up against Liverpool duo Mo Salah and Alexis MacAllister, as well as Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice and Chelsea forward Cole Palmer. United skipper Fernandes scored eight goals in 36 league appearances last season and 19 in all competitions. The award will be presented at a ceremony in Manchester on August 19. The last time a United player won the accolade was Wayne Rooney in 2010, with Manchester City and England forward Phil Foden the current holder.
