Fadillah: Do not politicise Zara Qairina's death, let probe run its course

KUCHING: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has urged the public not to politicise the death of Zara Qairina Mahathir and to allow the authorities space to complete the investigation in a thorough and transparent manner.
Fadillah said police were taking action, including forensic investigations and a review of earlier non-compliance.
"As we all know, Bukit Aman (federal police) have taken over the case and the investigation is ongoing.
"Forensics have conducted a post-mortem and follow-up action is being taken on the weaknesses previously identified," he said when met by reporters after the Madani Executive Discourse Programme at the Sarawak branch of Aminuddin Baki Institute here today.
Fadillah, who is also Petra Jaya member of parliament, said this in response to the public outcry demanding justice through the Justice For Zara campaign.
He added that the most important thing is to trust the nation's justice system to resolve the case fairly and equitably, without external pressure or sentiments that could disrupt the legal process.
"Let us not take the opportunity to spread sentiments that could destabilise the nation," he said.
He also warned that the spread of negative sentiments could not only jeopardise public harmony, but also erode confidence in the judiciary and police.
He added that hasty accusations against any party without solid evidence could undermine the credibility of the justice process and have adverse effects on all parties.
"It is best that we allow space for this investigation to be carried out transparently, and if injustice is indeed found, we have the legal channels and avenues to take the appropriate action.
"Any proven weakness or negligence must be acted upon, and the people must be assured that the nation's system is capable of upholding justice when given the opportunity to do so," he said.
He also urged the public not to turn the issue into a political tool to sow division, but to unite in demanding justice responsibly.
"I believe authorities will examine this case seriously, and let the process take its course before the outcome is conveyed to the public once everything has been concluded," he said.
