REM re-release debut single Radio Free Europe to aid threatened news service
Alternative rock band REM have re-released their debut single Radio Free Europe to raise funds for the pro-democracy media outlet.
The original single, about US government-funded media service Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), was released by the Grammy-winning band in 1981.

A remixed version is included in five-track benefit EP, Radio Free Europe 2025, released a day before World Press Freedom Day, which acts as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom.

It comes after attempts by the administration of US president Donald Trump to dismantle the US Agency for Global Media, including Voice of America and RFE/RL, which were designed to model independent news gathering globally in societies that restrict the press.
Lead singer of REM Michael Stipe said: 'Whether it's music or a free press – censorship anywhere is a threat to the truth everywhere.
'On World Press Freedom Day, I'm sending a shoutout to the brave journalists at Radio Free Europe.'

Bassist Mike Mills added: 'Radio Free Europe's journalists have been pissing off dictators for 75 years. You know you're doing your job when you make the right enemies.
'Happy World Press Freedom Day to the 'OG' Radio Free Europe.'
RFE/RL president and chief executive Stephen Capus said: 'To me, REM's music has always embodied a celebration of freedom: freedom of expression, lyrics that make us think, and melodies that inspire action.
'Those are the very aims of our journalists at Radio Free Europe — to inform, inspire, and uphold freedoms often elusive to our audiences. We hold dictators accountable.

'They go to great lengths to silence us—blocking our websites, jamming our signals, and even imprisoning our colleagues.'
In April, a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to restore $12 million that Congress appropriated for RFE/RL.
RFE/RL started broadcasting during the Cold War. Its programmes are aired in 27 languages in 23 countries across eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East.
Its corporate headquarters are in Washington, and its journalistic headquarters are in the Czech Republic.

In 2009, Radio Free Europe was inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry, which maintains and preserves sound recordings.
Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mills and Stipe were behind numerous alt-rock hits such as Everybody Hurts and It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine).
Last year, they were inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame and reunited at the ceremony in New York City where they performed an acoustic version of Losing My Religion.
In September 2011, the band announced they had 'decided to call it a day as a band'.

Billie Eilish and Nat Wolff CONFIRM romance with passionate kiss after previously denying dating rumors
Summer lovin' happened so fast for Billie Eilish and Nat Wolff. The Grammy-winning artist, 23, and actor, 30, finally confirmed to the public that they are romantically-involved with one another after rampant speculation. The Wildflower singer and actor, 30, were seen kissing during an outing in Venice, Italy this past weekend. The nine-time Grammy winner was seen snapping selfies with her new beau as she donned a striped green polo shirt with her black locks down. She beamed as she spent time with her new paramour, who has appeared in movies such as 2014's The Fault in Our Stars and 2015's Paper Towns. Wolff, wore a white T-shirt as he enjoyed the summer weekend with the songstress. 'The couple were locked in a passionate kiss on a balcony, a scene straight out of a romance novel,' a report from the outlet Deux Moi read. It continued: 'Adding to the dreamy atmosphere, they were seen sipping champagne and soaking up the Italian sun, clearly enjoying a romantic European getaway.' In images snapped in Italy, both The confirmation of the romance comes nearly one year after the released video for her single Chihiro, which featured Wolff as her love interest. The 'inescapable connection' between the two described by Eilish is depicted as they make their way out of the building and into a grassy field, where they playfully wrestle and eventually embrace one another. The idea behind the interaction between the characters, according to Eilish, was the 'external expression of an internal push and pull, as our deepest feelings of fear, love, or desire inevitably catch up to us, no matter how hard we try to run away.' The Eilish-directed clip had more than 1.23 million YouTube views in its first five hours of release Thursday, two weeks since the release of a lyrics video for the song that has racked up 7.7 million views on the platform. On Spotify, the song has been played more than 133 million times. The video for Eilish's single for Lunch was uploaded May 17, 2024 and has accumulated more than 25 million views in the weeks since. Eilish took to Instagram on May 16 with a clip in which she sat alongside her brother and musical collaborator Finneas, 26, speaking about their latest creative endeavor. Bombshell report reveals Pentagon fueled UFO myths around Area 51 to hide classified weapons program
America's UFO craze could be built on government lies Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SOME wild UFO conspiracy theories were deliberately cooked up and stoked the Pentagon itself, a bombshell report has revealed. The U.S. Department of Defense spread claims that aliens were kept at Area 51 to cover up secret weapons programs, according to an investigation by The Wall Street Journal. 4 Some UFO conspiracy theories actually began inside the Department of Defense, the WSJ revealed Credit: Getty 4 The purpose of the rumours was apparently to divert attention from secret weapons testing Credit: Getty 4 This was quietly left out of the Department of Defense's 2024 transparency report Credit: Getty In the 1980s, a U.S. Air Force colonel visited a bar near Area 51 in Nevada and handed the owner doctored photos of flying saucers near the military base. The photos were pinned to the walls - and before long, local legend, followed by the rest of the world, had it the U.S. military was secretly testing recovered alien tech. This came to light in a shocking review of the 2024 Defense Department report published by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Friday. The now-retired officer admitted to Pentagon investigators in 2023 that he was on an official mission to hide the site's real purpose. What was really happening at Area 51 was the secret testing and development of weapons programs and a stealth warplane - the F-117 Nighthawk - seen as vital to keeping an edge over the Soviet Union during the Cold War. But the Pentagon dismissed claims of a government UFO cover-up in their report last year. The WSJ argues that not only did the government mislead the public but it actively fuelled UFO myths. The report writes: "The Pentagon itself sometimes deliberately fanned the flames, in what amounted to the U.S. government targeting its own citizens with disinformation." It includes findings made by Sean Kirkpatrick, the first director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), who in 2022 was tasked with investigating countless UFO theories. Kirkpatrick discovered several conspiracies that traced back to the Pentagon itself. I'm an Area 51 investigator – FBI raided my home & tried to silence me but I know secret UFO base is hiding new weapons For example, his team found out that the Air Force had initiated new recruits by giving them mock briefings about a fake unit called 'Yankee Blue' - which supposedly investigated alien spacecraft. Under strict orders to keep quiet, many people never discovered that this was a prank, Kirkpatrick's team claimed. The strange practice continued until 2023 when the Pentagon finally issued an order across the DoD to put an end to it. Another finding by Kirkpatrick, reported by the WSJ, was that the government deliberately misled the public about secret military projects. For instance, Robert Salas, a former Air Force captain, claims he saw a UFO hover over a nuclear missile site in Montana in 1967. In reality, what he saw was a test of an early electromagnetic pulse (EMP) designed to see if American silos could survive atomic radiation and retaliate if the Soviet Union struck first. The test failed and Salas was told to never discuss what he saw, the report tells. A DoD spokesperson admitted to the WSJ that the government has not shared all of AARO's findings, saying a new report due later this year will be clearer. Sue Gough said: 'The department is committed to releasing a second volume of its Historical Record Report, to include AARO's findings on reports of potential pranks and inauthentic materials.' It comes as a photo claiming to show a 1,000ft-wide silver UFO soaring over the US was released by a notorious Pentagon whistleblower. The picture was allegedly snapped by an airline pilot in 2021 while flying 21,000ft above the Four Corners Monument - spanning New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado. Luis Elizondo revealed the photo during a UAP Disclosure Fund event. But sceptics were quick to challenge the discovery - claiming the photo merely showed irrigation circles that are common in desert climates.
