Lanvin: A return to elegance in Peter Copping's highly anticipated Paris debut

Independent27-01-2025

Lanvin, the world's oldest continually operating couture house, founded in 1889, unveiled a new chapter in its storied history with Peter Copping's debut as artistic director. Tasked with restoring focus and relevance to the maison at Paris Fashion Week, Copping took inspiration from Jeanne Lanvin herself, channeling her 1920s and '30s vision into a collection on Sunday night that bridged timeless elegance with modernity.
A tribute to Jeanne Lanvin's legacy
Copping's designs paid homage to Jeanne Lanvin's panoramic creativity, encompassing everything from couture to perfumes and interiors. The collection revived signature elements of the house, including capes, draped ribbon dresses, and the iconic (asterisk)robe de style.(asterisk) Notable looks included a gold metallic lurex dress, a petaled skirt, cascading antique-style lace aprons, and gilded trousers, which deftly balanced historical reference and contemporary allure.
Copping's approach revealed a deep reverence for the house's heritage. While some might wonder whether this homage leaned too close to the past, the collection's richness demonstrated his commitment to preserving the maison's DNA.
The looks: an Art Deco revival
Graphic patterns and motifs drawn from Jeanne Lanvin's own home infused the collection with Art Deco sophistication. A standout was a black velvet cape traced with silver studs, paired with a sheer blouse and tailored trousers. Eveningwear took center stage, with dramatic creations like spiral-draped ribbon dresses and mirror-embroidered pieces showcasing Copping's mastery of couture gestures.
While the collection's variety offered something for everyone — 62 looks spanning eveningwear, daywear, and menswear — it occasionally felt like a broad exploration rather than a single cohesive narrative. Even so, each piece's sheer creativity and technical precision highlighted Copping's passion for the craft.
Menswear innovations
Menswear, a new venture for Copping, offered intriguing moments, such as a silver mirror-embroidered long-sleeve T-shirt. While the menswear segment felt exploratory, it hinted at exciting possibilities for future collections as Copping refines his vision in this area.
The fall collection was more than a debut; it was a declaration of intent. The rousing applause at the finale reflected the audience's appreciation for Copping's thoughtful craftsmanship and deep respect for Jeanne Lanvin's legacy. This debut signals a bright future for Lanvin.

Meet Jackie Apostel, Cruz Beckham's Much Older Girlfriend

When you enter into a family as famous as the Beckhams – comprised of David and Victoria Beckham and their four children, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper Seven – then you also enter a world of fame, fortune and unending attention. Brooklyn's wife of three years, Nicola Peltz Beckham, knows this all too well. As does Cruz's girlfriend, Jackie Apostel. The latter has garnered particular attention because of the couple's age gap. Cruz is 19 years old, a decade younger than Jackie, who is 29. So who is Jackie? And how did she meet Posh and Becks' youngest son? Read on to find out more. She released her EP, The Reformation , in 2020, but announced in an Instagram post two years later that she would no longer be releasing music as an artist. Instead, Jackie wished to focus solely on songwriting and producing. 'My intention was and has never been to become a recording, touring artist,' she wrote. 'I'm a studio rat, I'm a creator, I'm a writer, a producer and an artist in many ways, but releasing the songs we did myself was always just a way of showcasing the tracks.' There is a 10 year age gap between Cruz Beckham and his girlfriend Jackie. It's not clear exactly how the duo first met, but they were first spotted together at Glastonbury festival in June 2024. They confirmed their relationship in October when Cruz publicly wished Jackie a happy birthday on his Instagram Stories. The couple regularly tag each other in mirror selfies and photos from their everyday lives. In January 2025, Cruz shared multiple photos with Jackie in Brazil and captioned it, 'So 2025 is going to be good, right? ❤️.' Jackie Apostel and Cruz Beckham in April 2025. In June, Jackie shared a framed photo of her and Cruz alongside a series of other images and videos of him captioned 'a good year' to mark their anniversary. Meanwhile Cruz wrote '1 year down, plenty to go'. Cruz's older brother Brooklyn, 26, has been married to Nicola Peltz, 30, since April 2022 and they live together in LA. Meanwhile, Romeo, 22, has recently split from his girlfriend of seven months, Kim Turnbull, reportedly due to their busy schedules. Prior to this relationship, he was with model and influencer Mia Regan for five years. Nikki Peach is a writer at Grazia UK, working across entertainment, TV and news. Tamara de Lempicka's ‘remarkable nude' of lover Rafaëla to be auctioned

When Tamara de Lempicka first came across the young sex worker Rafaëla on Bois de Boulogne in Paris, she was enchanted. Recalling the meeting, the artist called Rafaëla 'the most beautiful woman I have ever seen'. She added: 'Huge black eyes, beautiful sensual mouth, beautiful body. I stop her and say to her: 'Mademoiselle, I'm a painter and I would like you to pose for me. Would you do this?' She says: 'Yes. Why not?'' It was the beginning of an intense relationship – Lempicka and Rafaëla became lovers, and the model appears in several of the artist's important nudes, including 1927's La Belle Rafaëla, described by critics and scholars as 'one of the most remarkable nudes of the century' and 'the highest achievement of the painter's career'. That painting, which depicts a short-haired woman illuminated by a beam of Caravaggesque light and covered with a red cloth that matches her lipstick, is to be auctioned by Sotheby's this month, with an estimate of £6m-£9m. The auction house called it one of the greatest works by Lempicka ever to go under the hammer, and a quintessential example of the artist's sensual and elegant style, which has come to personify the art deco age. It is also an example of Lempicka's defiance of the subject of the female nude as a historically male artist's domain. 'Lempicka was revolutionary in depicting a seductive female nude from a woman's perspective, at a moment when the narrative of art was male-oriented,' said André Zlattinger, the head of modern art for Europe at Sotheby's. 'The market has only started to really appreciate her in recent years, not only in the context of art deco – which itself is celebrating its centenary this year – but in the context of art history. A sensuous depiction of the woman who was both her muse and lover, the painting is also remarkable for its presentation of a woman in full possession of her sexuality, by a woman living to the fullest the idea of artistic and sexual freedom during a defining period between the two world wars.' Born Tamara Rosalia Gurwik-Gorska in 1898 in Warsaw, Poland (then a sovereign state of Russia), Lempicka has come to be recognised both by her epithet, the 'Baroness with a Brush', and as an icon of the roaring 20s. After the divorce of her parents, she was sent to live with her wealthy aunt in St Petersburg, where she developed a taste for luxury. At 18 she married Tadeusz Lempicki, but within a year the Russian Revolution forced the newlyweds to relocate to Paris. In a bid to reinvent herself, she assumed the name Tamara de Lempicka, which she felt had an aristocratic air. She soon cultivated a glittering social circle, establishing herself as the superlative portrait painter of both the nouveau riche and the aristocratic elite. During this time, she and Lempicki divorced, and she later wed Baron Raoul Kuffner after he commissioned her to paint a portrait of his mistress. The couple relocated to Hollywood after the outbreak of the second world war, where Lempicka was briefly the toast of Tinseltown, before her work began to fall out of favour with the rise of abstract expressionism. After the sudden death of the baron on an ocean liner in 1961, she moved to Texas, before finally settling in Cuernavaca, Mexico, where she lived until her death in 1980. But over the past two decades Lempicka's market has been in the ascendant. Early collectors of her work included the likes of Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Jack Nicholson and Wolfgang Joop, while last year saw the Broadway debut of the musical Lempicka and the opening of her first retrospective in the US. Despite her marriages, Lempicka's relationship with Rafaëla has been the one to have captured imaginations. It has inspired authors and playwrights alike, inlcuding Ellis Avery, whose novel The Last Nude imagines their affair. The painting will go on public view at Sotheby's Zurich from 13 to 15 June, and in London from 18to 24 June. It was last offered at auction in May 1985 and was acquired by the current owner in the 1990s. Lempicka's auction record is £16.3m, set in London in February 2020 for Portrait of Marjorie Ferry.
