Kristi Noem unveils ICE detention centre coined the ‘Speedway Slammer'
The Indiana-based facility, built in partnership with the state Department of Corrections, will hold 'some of the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens arrested by ICE,' the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement on Tuesday.
Noem announced the centre on X, saying, 'COMING SOON to Indiana: The Speedway Slammer. Today, we're announcing a new partnership with the state of Indiana to expand detention bed space by 1,000 beds,' she wrote.
'Thanks to @GovBraun for his partnership to help remove the worst of the worst out of our country. If you are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Indiana's Speedway Slammer,' she continued, adding that to avoid arrest, people residing illegally in the U.S. can self-deport.'

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun announced that the state would cooperate with Noem's department on Aug. 1, saying, 'Indiana is not a safe haven for illegal immigration. We will fully partner with federal immigration authorities as they enforce the most fundamental laws of our country.'

The 'Speedway Slammer' references one of Indiana's most famous attractions, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security shared an AI-generated image of an Indy 500 car, with the word 'ICE' (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) plastered across its livery, rushing past a looming concrete prison surrounded by barbed wire and watch towers.

The owner of the Indianapolis Speedway, Penske Entertainment, told the IndyStar, that it was 'unaware of plans to incorporate our imagery as part of the announcement.'
'Consistent with our approach to public policy and political issues, we are communicating our preference that our IP not be utilized moving forward in relation to this matter,' the statement said.
Its unveiling follows the opening of detention centre named 'Alligator Alcatraz' in Florida, another facility built by the Trump administration designed to house illegal migrants.
Alligator Alcatraz, which has been condemned by critics as an inhumane makeshift prison camp, was praised by the president as a model for future nationwide facilities aimed at accelerating deportations, including possibly deporting U.S. citizens.

Trump, Noem and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said in July that the facility will soon 'handle the most menacing migrants, some of the most vicious people on the planet.'
The president said the moniker is 'very appropriate because I looked outside and that's not a place I want to go hiking anytime soon.'

Ford government directed staff to ‘brainstorm' how to subsidize truck tolls on Hwy. 407
Ontario Premier Doug Ford's office directed civil servants to look into the viability of subsidizing the tolls of trucks on Highway 407, Global News can reveal, devoting government resources to researching a signature policy pitched by the opposition. Internal emails and documents obtained using freedom of information laws show civil servants were told to 'brainstorm and explore' policies to reduce congestion on Highway 401, including 'diverting commercial truck traffic' to the 407. Highway 401 is among the most congested arterial routes in North America, while the privately operated and tolled Highway 407 — which was sold on a 99-year lease at the turn of the century — generally flows fast. The idea of moving trucks from the 401 to 407 was first raised by the Ontario NDP in 2022 as an alternative to the Progressive Conservative plan of building Highway 413. Over the past year, since announcing his tunnel plan, Ford has flirted with buying back Highway 407 or negotiating with its owners. He has never revealed whether any meaningful conversations have taken place. A spokesperson for the company which operates Highway 407 told Global News the idea had been discussed. 'Trucks have come up in discussions — they are an important component of our customer base and account for millions of trips taken on Highway 407 ETR every year,' they said in a statement. It adds: 'The PO is particularly interested in policy options that improve 407 ETR affordability for commercial trucks.' The documents confirm civil servants devoted time and resources to studying the idea, but they do not reveal what they found or what they told the government. One of the documents released via the freedom of information request is titled 'Brainstorming Policy Options for Diverting Commercial Truck Traffic from Highway 401 to Highway 407 ETR.' The 12-page briefing is almost entirely blacked out. A separate document describes it as a policy 'gap' that Ontario trucks 'do not receive any subsidies for Highway 407 tolls.' It suggests Ontario could 'provide subsidies to truckers to divert traffic from other highways, thus easing traffic congestion.' Stiles urged the government to make its Highway 407 studies public. She said they would show the move could improve congestion at a fraction of the cost of building a Highway 401 tunnel. 'I would love to hear what they've learned so far,' she said. 'We've done some of our own research on this, and it's pretty clear that this would be a much more feasible project.' Story continues below advertisement Originally an NDP idea The idea Ford's office told civil servants to study was first pitched by the NDP. During the 2022 election, when the Progressive Conservatives made building Highway 413 a central pledge to alleviate congestion, the NDP pointed to the near-empty 407. Despite not winning that election, the opposition party has repeated the pledge several times, including again during the 2025 election and through opposition motions. 'You could land an airplane on it — I mean, literally, an airplane landed on it right in the middle of the day with no problem,' Stiles said during a debate at Queen's Park last year. 'The highway is underused because the tolls are too high.' The Ford government has voted down attempts by the NDP to move that plan forward, while — at times — sounding receptive. Story continues below advertisement After announcing his Highway 401 tunnel plan, Ford said he had thought about trying to buy the 407 back into public ownership. Then, his government suggested discussions of some kind were taking place. 'We have been in conversation with the 407 and will continue to work with our partners as we find new ways to keep our roads and economy moving,' a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation said last November. A couple of months later, Ford himself appeared to contradict that when he said it was 'time to sit down' with executives at Highway 407 ETR — which operates the toll road — for discussions. Where the plan stands now is unclear. The spokesperson for the company which runs the 407 said conversations often take place with the government. 'As part of our regular course of engagement with the Government of Ontario, we continue to explore opportunities to alleviate congestion across the region,' they said in a statement. '407 ETR's approach to easing congestion in the GTA strives to increase traffic during the days of week, times of day and sections of the Highway where we have room to accommodate more vehicles. Our goal is to attract additional traffic without disrupting the world-class driving experience that our customers rely on.' Man sentenced to life for cocaine-induced stabbing death of St. Albert teen
WARNING: The details of this story may be disturbing to some readers. On Thursday, Kaj Alexander Randall pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for a stabbing that killed a 17-year-old girl and injured a 13-year-old girl in July 2024. The brutal attack happened in the girl's home in St. Albert last summer with a father figure they trusted. Jaeden Chaisson was stabbed to death on July 18, 2024 in a townhouse in the Riverside area of the city directly north of Edmonton. Due to the age of the victims, there was a publication ban protecting the identity of the 13-year-old girl. But on Thursday in court, now-14-year-old Brooklyn Janes fought to remove the ban on her identity. This follows the decision by the fatal stabbing victim's mother and Brooklyn's aunt, Nicole Chaisson, to remove the publication ban from her daughter's name earlier in the court case. Story continues below advertisement 'We weren't allowed to talk about [Jaeden], we were not allowed to show her face, but I want people to know what a beautiful person she was, the smile that she showed us all the time, this is who she was,' said Chaisson. 'This is what she needs to be remembered for, not for how she left us. So, I just want to honour the better parts of her story as opposed to the horrific ending that she had.' Randall, his common-law partner, Kayla Chaisson and her 13-year-old daughter Brooklyn had all lived together as a family for three years, and 17-year-old Jaeden moved in with her aunt and cousin a few weeks before the attack. They had a 10-minute phone call about an hour and a half later, during which Kayla also talked to her daughter and described both her partner and child as happy. WARNING: Graphic details ahead Randall went into their ensuite bathroom on the top floor of the three-story home and snorted some of the cocaine he'd bought around 10 p.m. He then called Kayla again, but this time she noted his voice was unusually monotone and he sounded 'off' enough that she wrapped up work and left to go home. About five minutes later, Randall, armed with a kitchen knife, was down on the home's middle floor living area. He began stabbing Jaeden repeatedly in the head, neck, chest, and arms as she screamed for him to stop. Jaeden was stabbed a total of 21 times. Brooklyn was in her bedroom upstairs talking to a friend on the phone when she overheard Jaeden screaming. She hung up. She didn't know what was happening downstairs but could hear her cousin in pain. Brooklyn went to her bedroom door and tried to hold it shut, but Randall forced his way in. Story continues below advertisement He started to violently attacking the 13-year-old: stabbing, punching, kicking, and throwing her. She sustained at least 12 stab wounds. 1:52 Heartbroken mother remembers daughter fatally stabbed in St. Albert He briefly left the room, during which time Brooklyn crawled under her bed and tried to call 911, but Randall returned too quickly. He flipped the mattress, found the girl, and began violently assaulting the girl again. The girl described her mom's partner as 'looking crazy, breathing heavily, growling, and having eyes that were huge.' The statement of facts said he didn't say anything during the attack. At some point during the assault, his knife broke into pieces. Brooklyn then pretended to be dead, and Randall left the home and drove away. The attacks on both girls lasted about five minutes from start to finish. Story continues below advertisement As soon as she could no longer hear her attacker in the house, Brooklyn went downstairs to find Jaeden laying on the floor, severely injured but still alive. Shortly after, a friend Jaeden had invited over arrived, saw the girls covered in blood and severely injured, and called police. RCMP arrived to find Jaeden collapsed on the front lawn with deep stab wounds on her body. The officers jumped in to apply tourniquets and pressure on her wounds to stop the bleeding while waiting for paramedics to arrive. Both girls were taken to the Stollery Children's Hospital, but Jaeden's injuries were too severe and she had lost a lot of blood. She went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance. The 17-year-old suffered 14 more minor cuts, lacerations and stab wounds to her hands and arms, and seven more major stab wounds: three on the right of her neck, two on her shoulder, one hear her right clavicle, and one to the back of her head. One of the wounds damaged her carotid artery, which led to a great deal of blood loss and deprived her brain of oxygen. Brooklyn's physical injuries to her head, neck, shoulders and thorax were less severe and she was discharged from the hospital the next day. Despite several surgeries and procedures to keep Jaeden alive, she was taken off life support two days after the attack and died in hospital on July 20, 2024. Story continues below advertisement Her cause of death was multiple sharp force stabbing injuries. 1:07 Man facing murder charge after one of two St. Albert teen stabbing victims dies After leaving the scene of the attack, Randall got into his car and drove away erratically, glancing off another nearby building as he went down the alley. He sent a text to his partner, saying he loved her. As he drove down Ray Gibbon Drive out of St. Albert towards Edmonton, he threw his phone out the window into the ditch. It was found by police the next day. Randall went to his mom's home in Edmonton. The next day, she saw the arrest warrant for her son in the news and questioned him, to which he said, 'I think something is wrong with me.' RCMP found him there on the day Jaeden died and arrested him without incident. Story continues below advertisement A family grieving, but still tight-knit In court on Thursday, Brooklyn stood and said she looked up to Jaeden as a sister. Nicole Chaisson, Jaeden's mom and Brooklyn's aunt, said the two teens would FaceTime every morning as they got ready for school. Brooklyn would spend weekends at her house, and Jaeden would go to Kayla's. 'We're a very, very close family,' Nicole said. 'It's not like we're all doing our own thing. 'We all do it all together, the girls were just the next generation of the sisters doing it all together again. And you can definitely see that part — it's left a big hole in Brooklyn.' 'She was just as much a victim in this as anybody else. I love my sister very much,' said Nicole. Randall pleaded guilty and waived his right to a trial. The defence said Randall was experiencing drug-induced psychosis when attacked the teens, and added he had no motive for the crime. Through tears, Randall stood and told the courtroom, 'I'm sorry for all the pain this has caused, I didn't want any of this.' Story continues below advertisement In the courtroom, Justice Cheryl Arcand-Kootenauy sentenced Randall to life in prison with no chance of parole for 12 years. He also has a concurrent sentence of seven years for the attack on Brooklyn.
