Chandigarh, Aug 13 (PTI) A 16-year-old girl was rescued from getting married at a village in Punjab's Faridkot by a team of District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), officials said. Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister, Baljit Kaur, commended the action taken by officials and stakeholders, stressing that strict enforcement of child protection laws is essential to safeguard the rights of minors. Regular follow-up and monitoring will be undertaken to safeguard the best interests of the child. Reiterating the commitment of the Punjab government to making the state child marriage-free, Kaur said continuous efforts are being made to strengthen the system for awareness generation, prevention, and effective enforcement of laws, so that every child can enjoy a safe and bright childhood. Laws can be used to protect SC/ST people from atrocities: Legal Services Authority

People belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) communities can protect themselves from atrocities by effectively using relevant laws, said K. Ratna Prasadu, Secretary of the erstwhile West Godavari District Legal Services Authority. An awareness programme focusing on Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955 and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 was held on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) at the District Legal Services Authority office here. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prasadu said that if police stations fail to register a complaint, private complaints can be filed directly in the courts. Under the provisions of the SC/ST Act, a vigilance and monitoring committee headed by the District Collector must be constituted in every district, meeting once every three months to review the progress of cases related to SCs and STs. The governments are responsible for protecting witnesses and ensuring compensation to victims. In case of difficulties in obtaining compensation, victims are advised to approach the District Legal Services Authority, he said. Quoting the Protection of Civil Rights Act, Mr. Prasadu stressed that it is the government's duty to safeguard the rights of every citizen and ensure their freedom to live with dignity. If these basic rights are violated, individuals can seek assistance from the District Legal Services Authority. Eluru DSP Sravan Kumar, advocate P. Ratna Raju, social worker Methar Ajay Babu, and others were present.

Berhampur: A POCSO court here sentenced a 59-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for having unnatural sex with a 16-year-old boy about two years ago in Berhampur, a government advocate said. Pranati Pattnaik, the Additional District Judge-cum-Judge of the POCSO court, also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict, who is a distant relative of the victim, special public prosecutor Narayan Panda said. The accused will undergo jail for an additional year if he fails to pay the fine, he said. The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to pay Rs 50,000 compensation to the victim, he said, adding that the entire fine amount will also be paid to the teen after recovery. The court pronounced the judgment after examining the statements of nine witnesses, including police, doctor and medical reports, Panda added. According to the prosecution, the convict forcibly had an unnatural sex with the minor boy after inviting him to his home on February 17, 2023. He had committed the crime with the boy on the first floor of the house, while his family members were on the ground floor, the prosecution said. The matter came to light when the victim told his mother about the incident after he fell sick. His mother lodged an FIR the next day at Baidyanathpur police station. The accused was arrested the same day under different sections of the IPC and POCSO Act. Since his arrest, he has been in jail as his bail pleas were rejected by the court earlier, the special public prosecutor added.
