Old N Chennai sewer to be replaced at 946cr

Chennai: Metrowater has planned to replace the entire 40-year-old sewer lines in north Chennai areas in order to reduce sewage issues like reverse flow and constant blockage of main lines.
At an outlay of 946 crore, the Metrowater will replace 213-km-long sewer networks benefiting more than 20 lakh residents in key areas like Royapuram, Tondiarpet, and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar. Metrowater has floated tenders in area-wise packages under the Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam.
The project entails expanding the main line's diameters from 200 mm to 400 mm to meet the demands of increased sewage flow. Metrowater has hired Sai Engineering Consultants, who prepared detailed designs for the work, which will begin shortly.

Metrowater managing director T G Vinay said they are also setting up odour control systems in their STPs (sewage treatment plants) as part of the project.
"As many as 126 new pump sets to fast-track flow and 41 diesel generators will be procured. The work will be completed by June 2026," he said. Vinay added that some of the work has already begun.
Metrowater will also build newer machine holes in each zone, ranging from 200 to 500, for workers to easily fix issues.
Additionally, sewage pumping stations are planned in Kolathur and Villivakkam areas, where complaints of reverse flow were reported.
Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency MLA J J Ebenzer said the flow capacity is less, and the metrowater pumps out sewage.
"Since the pipes are narrower, they break, and the road sinks in. Many pipes are rusted too. About 40% of the estimated project cost is allotted for RK Nagar, but this won't be enough.
We need to cover areas such as Kasimedu and Tondiarpet too, where such lines are 30 years old," he said.
Royapuram MLA Idream Murthy said six works have been given for the Royapuram assembly constituency. "Several sewer lines in bus route roads of Mint, Cemetery Road, and Old Washermenpet are being replaced. We are taking up work in patches to ensure that the public are not inconvenienced. The govt has instructed us not to undertake diggings after Sept 15. So, 50% of pipes will be placed before that. The rest will be taken up after Jan," he said.
