I was sick of painting my fence to get rid of green algae – £10 bathroom buy transformed it in seconds & took no effort
So, one savvy gardener who was fed up with painting her fence every single year found an easy way to cover it up without spending hours painting it again.

Lesley Timby, from the UK, took the time to share her clever gardening hack on social media.
She first showed the fence she was dealing with, which had been painted black.
Unfortunately for Lesley, green algae kept growing all over the structure even after cleaning and painting it.
So, instead of repeating the same job this year, she decided to switch things up and cover the fence with shower curtains.
Lesley wrote: "Job for today.
"After spending lots of cash on black duck back fence paint only for it to keep turning green after winter, I decided to give shower curtains a go.
"Looks amazing."
The shower curtain hack became popular last year and is still going strong.
Take one look at the # showercurtaingarden trend on TikTok and you'll find over 93 million videos with people sharing their take on it.
And it's easy to see why the trend is so popular, if your fence is damaged it can cost an average of £30-40 to replace it, whereas a shower curtain costs just £10.
Lesley used two shower curtains to cover her fence, and both displayed a picture of two blue chairs and a table with large matching vases on either side with giant shrubs inside.
It was finished off with a matching blue window printed on it and two lanterns.
Lesley was pleased with the transformation, which meant she no longer had to worry about the algae lurking underneath.
People were quick to take to the comments on the post shared in the group, Gardening On A Budget Official.
How to get algae off fences
ABS Fencing shared a list of do's and don'ts when it comes to cleaning green algae off your fence.
Don't use household mould or mildew remover sprays as these are generally intended for use on hard surfaces indoor.
Don't use bleach in the garden, it kills a lot more than the mould.
Don't try sanding back the top surface of the wood, as algae will just regrow back.
Don't bother with power hosing – that only opens up the timber grain and allows more water inside, making the problem worse down the line.
Do use white vinegar mixed with hot water in a spray bottle and work it in with a brush, leave for 30 mins or more, then hose down.
Do repaint when dry with good quality fence paint.
They loved the look of Lesley's new garden feature and others were inspired to do the same.

Southwark sees 77% rise in homeless children, report finds
There is one classroom worth of homeless children for every primary school in Southwark, according to a new report from the New Economics Foundation (NEF).The number of youths in temporary accommodation (TA) in the south London borough rose by 77% in four years, meaning the area alone accounted for almost one in 30 households in TA nationwide, the paper Wright, the report's author, told BBC London that children in TA faced wide-ranging harms including mental health problems, malnutrition and difficulties in school, which could be a "disaster" for their Council said it aims to tackle homelessness in the borough "head-on". The report, titled Nowhere to Grow: The hidden harm of temporary accommodation on children, found that about 3,500 children, approximately 5.75% in the borough, were living in TA in 2024, up from 1,900 in 2020. The 77% increase was higher than the 25% rise seen across England between 2020 and 2024.A spokesperson for Southwark Council said: "As the largest local authority landlord in London, we have been greatly impacted by the national housing crisis, but we are doing all that we can to alleviate these pressures on our residents."Since 2013/14 we've built or began construction on more than 3,000 council homes, more than anywhere else in England."Our Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy 2025-2030 seeks to address this crisis head-on by tackling the root causes of homelessness through early intervention working across services and departments. "In 2024-2025 we recorded a 72% success rate in preventing homelessness, including amongst families with children, where early help was provided." Overcrowding in TA was also causing knock-on effects on a children's psychological wellbeing including sleep deprivation and stress, her report Wright said one of the children in another family she interviewed developed severe agoraphobia after the family was confined to a single room for more than a year in the issue, Ms Wright said, was not unique to Southwark."Things are fairly dire across the country," she said. "When we think about the physical spaces children occupy, their homes and school, if both are uprooted, it's a disaster for children's lives."When it comes to TA, the preferred housing is properties the councils own. But a lot of those are full basically everywhere in the country."The result, she said, was councils paying landlords for poor quality properties at a premium rate."A lot of these private sector rental houses have damp, mould and physical hazards," Ms Wright said."Another family I spoke to had a sparking electrical box in the room a disabled child was staying in." 'Duty to communicate' In her report, she said councils were paying unprecedented sums to meet their statutory duties, with roughly £2.3bn spent on TA nationally in a lack of communication between schools, the healthcare system and social care meant vital information about the health and wellbeing of children in temporary accommodation was being missed, Ms Wright said. "Children are falling through the gaps," she said. "It is not a case of people not doing their best, it's that [TA] is not currently working and the systems are not in place."She said she focussed on local authority level recommendations in her report, including a "duty to communicate", which would mean housing, health and social care services would have to communicate when placing children in temporary also suggested creating a dedicated role or team in local authorities to provide families with a single point of contact when navigating temporary accommodation. A spokesperson for London Councils, an organisation which represents all of the capital's boroughs, said further work was needed to increase affordable housing across London."London boroughs are proud to have led a resurgence in council housing delivery more than 24,000 new council-led homes since 2018-19, but more homes are needed to address the capital's chronic shortage of affordable housing," they said.

Middlesbrough's South Bank station footbridge replacement delayed
Work to replace an unsafe railway footbridge has been delayed after more issues were identified during a site structure at South Bank station, near Middlesbrough, has been shut for 10 months, with rail replacement buses forced to operate eastbound due to the lack of access to one of the was due to start in July to remove the bridge and replace it, but Network Rail said extra potential issues around pipes and cables had been identified, leading to Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA), which has committed to funding the work, said the delays were "frustrating". Smarden sanctuary marks one year of Ukrainian lion's recovery
A sanctuary which rescued a lion from Ukraine that was so traumatised she was unable to stand has celebrated a year of her recovery in the marked a year since Yuna arrived at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Smarden, Kent, after being rescued from a concrete enclosure which was bombed just two days after she story sparked a £500,000 fundraising campaign that ultimately led to the rescue of four more lions and the construction of a new facility for Whitnall, managing director at the sanctuary, said: "To see her today, walking on grass, playing, and simply behaving how nature intended, is an emotional moment for all of us." He added: "She's full of personality, loves exploring her new surroundings, and is finally living the life a lion should."Mr Whitnall said people had come from as far as Australia to see Yuna."She is the poster girl for the others," he explained."Without her arrival, Rori, Vanda, Amani and Lira would not have been rescued. She was the symbol of hope. "It's been a global story and the world fell in love with Yuna" The Big Cat Sanctuary, in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Species Survival Commission, has launched a "centre for species survival" dedicated exclusively to wild cats, which it says is the first of its kind in the sanctuary says it joins a group of just 30 centres worldwide that are positioned as hubs for species conservation, which are strategic partnerships that aim to further species conservation through science, fieldwork and collaboration.
