Volunteers out in force in Cork town brightening its streets and parks as the summer takes hold
Chairperson of the Macroom Tidy Towns Cllr Martin Coughlan said the group planted a range of flowers, picked up litter and erected memorial seating in parts of the town.
'We were doing some maintenance work ourselves over the Bank Holiday weekend, planting flowers and stuff like that for the summertime.
'We also have a biodiversity hatch along the bank of the river where we plant a lot of trees and stuff like that over the last number of years.
'It was very busy over the fine weekend as there was a massive amount of families around the place,' Mr Coughlan said.
Macroom Tidy Towns has erected over 25 memorial seating areas across the town over the past five years, and the latest addition was placed in Oakwood.
'Over the past five years we got sponsored by different people to put plastic seats around the place in memory of family members who have passed away and that sort of stuff.
'They are recycled plastic seats, and we have at least 25 of them now placed throughout the castle domain, the town park and the Fairy Garden.
'Residents of Oakwood bought one for us there last year and we erected it last weekend,' he added.
Mr Coughlan complimented the number of volunteers who donated their time to the Tidy Towns and added that the door is always open for people who want to take part in the future.
'We are always looking for new volunteers and they will be truly welcome,' he concluded.

More transport options for Cork residents as new midwest Local Link service is launched
Corkman A new bus service linking Macroom to Rylane every Tuesday has been launched. Local Link Cork launched the new demand responsive transport (DRT) service that will serve Macroom, Coolnadane, Bawnmore, Coppaleen Bawn, Ballinagree, Anaghana, Flagmount Cross, and Rylane. Local Links are part of the Transport for Ireland (TFI) Network. The service will run twice each Tuesday, with the first Rylane-bound service set to leave Macroom at 10:55am from the Mills bus stop. The service will terminate at Thatch House in Rylane Lower. The Macroom-bound service will leave Rylane Lower at 11:52am and will arrive in the Midwest Cork town's Mills bus stop at 12:05pm. The final service of the day will leave Macroom at 3:20pm and will terminate at 3:46pm at Thatch House in Rylane Lower. The reverse journey will leave Rylane at 3:57pm and will arrive in Macroom at 4:30pm. The service will not operate on public holidays. Free travel pass will be accepted and children under 5 will travel for free. Independent councillor for Macroom, Martin Coughlan said the Local Link services are crucial for the older generation to keep their independence. 'First of all, for the town, it is great that we have the Local Link service that brings people to the town so they can do business and other things like that. 'It is a great service for the older generation who would like to come to town for the day independently without the need to be driven to town by someone or a taxi, 'I am completely and utterly in favour of the Local Links services because they are the way forward for this country,' Mr Coughlan said. The Local Link service was expanded in 2023 by the government, and Mr Coughlan paid tribute to the Green Party for their influence on the scheme during their tenure. 'In my own opinion, this would be thanks to the Greens for being in government for a term, we saw a lot of these things happening, and I hope that we wont see them drying up,' Mr Coughlan concluded.
