Art project brings together the generations
The Tiling The Story Of BD7 scheme was the brainchild of Dr Sofia Buncy, who is project director at the Khidmat Centre in Lidget Green, and teacher Lucy Canning.
Children from Horton Grange Primary School and women who live in the BD7 postcode area were brought together under the guidance of visual artist Zareena Bano.
The resulting pieces now form a welcome sign which was this week unveiled in the centre's foyer.
Dr Buncy, who is also a Deputy Lord Lieutenant for West Yorkshire, said the idea for the project was created after observing that both groups used the centre but separately.
She said: "The women spoke about the fact that actually arts and sports and culture had not been a priority for them as they were growing up.
"They'd spent their lives serving families and serving communities.
"This was one of the times that they were able to relax and enjoy and creative spaces."
A group of women, many who know each other from school, were then introduced to the children.
Dr Buncy said: "I just think there is a lot of mileage in intergenerational work.
"There is a lot of two-way learning, but I think there is an assumption that it will just be one way.
"I think it's beautiful what can come as a consequence and we see that here."
Over a number of weeks the women and the children created round tiles and mosaics designs featuring mandala design.
Mandala art is a geometric design or pattern, often circular, that represents the cosmos or deities in various spiritual traditions
Ms Buno said: "At first there was a bit of resistance because they didn't know what to expect
"But after a few sessions they just connected and what they created was tangible, colourful and bold and they learned from each other."
Rayyan, 10, said the project had taught him how much fun art could be while fellow pupil Humaira, also 10, said she had "bonded with the ladies" and "shared stories".
Retired nursery nurse Shaheen Hafeez said: "It's brought me back memories of when I was young and I used to do drawing.
"But nobody took interest in it.
"Now I know that these children are interested in it and are going to take part in it, especially at home."
Teacher Thahmina Rahman said: "We talked about ideas such as the circle of life.
"We wanted something to represent our school values such as resilience and kindness.
"And we also thought about how we could tie in the culture of our community into the design.
"The children have honestly loved it. Every single session the bond has just strengthened, week after week."

Care leaver's service in Bradford 'has improved'
BRADFORD'S care leaver service has been praised by inspectors following a recent visit by Ofsted. Inspectors visited the service in early July, and have just published their findings. Their report says that while care leavers had 'lost faith' in the service in recent years, there have been recent major improvements. Care leavers are young adults aged 18 to 25 who are about to leave the care system, or have recently left care. Bradford Council still has a responsibility for care leavers, and this includes helping them find a place to live, supporting them with developing skill or moving into further education and helping with their budgeting. The Ofsted visit is the latest monitoring inspection to be carried out since Bradford's Children's Services was judged Inadequate in both 2018 and 2022. The service has since been taken over by an arm's length trust. The findings of the report were sent by letter to Marium Haque, Bradford Council's outgoing head of Children's Services. The letter says: 'Since the last inspection strong political and corporate support, together with significant additional investment in the care leaving service, is driving service improvements for vulnerable care leavers in Bradford. 'The trust and the council are working effectively together with a shared commitment to enabling their care leavers to thrive. 'There is a palpable determination by senior leaders to improve care leavers' experiences and opportunities, and ensure they have the emotional and practical support to transition successfully to adulthood and beyond. 'The council's local offer has been improved. Vulnerable care leavers are now benefiting from support from a stable and permanent team of personal advisers providing them with a trusted adult, helping them navigate adult life and face the myriad of challenges this brings. 'Care leavers spoken with during the visit reflected that they previously had numerous changes of workers, which meant that some care leavers lost faith in the service. Positively, care leavers told inspectors that more recent practice has improved, and they are now benefiting from increasingly stable relationships with their workers. They reflected that their workers talk about them with affection and help them to make progress and achieve their ambitions. 'Some plans are not routinely updated when care leavers' situations change, including changes in accommodation, meaning that their current needs may not always be fully assessed or understood. 'Partnership working has been strengthened, in particular relationships with housing. This is ensuring that care leavers have priority status for Bradford homes. Most care leavers live in suitable accommodation that meets their needs. 'PAs in the leaving care service spoke very positively about working in Bradford. They reflected on the historical challenges and articulated how they now feel happy, settled and better supported with their work.'

Firefighters called to Keighley Bus Museum as another fire breaks out in roof
FIREFIGHTERS were called to Keighley Bus Museum for the second time in a matter of days after a fire broke out. West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service was called to the bus museum at 9pm on Wednesday (July 30). A fire had broken out in the building's roof. A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 9pm last night to the bus museum. "We sent three crews plus an aerial ladder who tackled a fire in the roof, which was extinguished." The spokesperson said fire investigators will be at the scene today to look into the cause. There are no reports of injuries, they added.

Images show how planned £13m footbridge across busy road will look
NEW images show how a £13m footbridge over a busy road will look as the long-planned scheme finally takes a step forward. Proposals for a new crossing at the A629 between Steeton and Silsden date back years, but progress on the major project is finally being made. Bradford Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) recently held a public consultation on the project, which will see a combined pedestrian and cycle bridge built over the busy road. The feedback from the consultation has helped shape plans for the bridge, and new images showing what the crossing will look like have now been released. However, the costly project is only one part of wider plans, with a second phase to create new paths from the centres of Steeton and Silsden to the bridge currently unfunded. Reports written after the consultation say that more than 600 residents responded, with 85 per cent expressing support for the proposed bridge. There was also strong public backing for the proposed new crossing points and ramp linking the railway station to Station Road. One person responding to the consultation argued that an underpass or traffic light crossing would be better options. WYCA responded, saying: 'A bridge was considered the best option that aligned with the project's objectives as it achieved the separation required between traffic and those walking, wheeling or cycling to improve safety for all users. "Furthermore, there is less impact on traffic flow compared to a signalised crossing and there are greater safety and security benefits compared to an underpass. 'Flood risk would also be minimised when compared to an underpass.' One respondent said: 'I am concerned about unauthorised access by vehicles onto the bridge.' The Authority said it will now install additional bollards at either side of the bridge in response to these concerns. In response the authority says: 'The feasibility of accommodating equestrian users the bridge is being reviewed.' One respondent raised concerns over the huge cost of the bridge. In response, the Authority said: 'The bridge will be funded through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, subject to the development of a successful business case. 'The funding is separate from Council revenue funding for Council services and is ringfenced by central government for use only to deliver sustainable transport improvements and cannot be spent on council services.' The next stage of the project involves the submission of a planning application. Once planning is approved, the project team will move forward with the procurement of a construction partner. A full business case will be submitted to WYCA in early 2026. If the planning application and full business case are approved, the new bridge is expected to open in spring 2027.
