EastEnders confirms tragic update on legend in iPlayer release ahead of death
Tonight's EastEnders offered an update on a show legend, and it wasn't good news.
Viewers have followed Nigel Bates' (Paul Bradley) dementia journey for several months now, since his return to Walford last winter.
When Nigel arrived in Albert Square, he reconnected with old friend Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), but it took him a while to work up the courage to tell him why he was really back in London.
Eventually, Nigel's young-onset dementia diagnosis was revealed, and he confessed that he had walked out on wife Julie Bates (Karen Henthorn) to save her from having to care for him as his condition deteriorated.
However, in recent scenes, Nigel and Julie reconnected and, despite their differences, Phil allowed her to move into the house to prevent Nigel from having to choose between them.
It's safe to say that Phil and Julie have yet to overcome said differences, and tonight's episode saw them take very different approaches to Nigel's illness.
After a disagreement over Julie's chickens, the trio headed to the doctor's surgery for Nigel's assessment, where it was revealed that things were worse than they thought.
Though the doctor commended his physical health, she explained that his short-term memory had rapidly deteriorated.
However, it was clear that Julie was in denial, as she later insisted to Nigel that the doctor must have made a mistake and that everything would be fine.
After Julie and Phil bickered once more, this time over what was for dinner, Nigel pulled Phil aside for a chat, where he admitted that he didn't want their living situation to make things difficult.
Phil assured him that he would make it work, because even though he doesn't like Julie, he cares about Nigel and wants the best for him.
He admitted that he didn't think Julie was good for Nigel, pointing out how she didn't seem to be taking things seriously and was acting like he didn't have a serious illness.
When Julie overheard this, she was furious and demanded that Phil stop reminding Nigel about 'how bad his life is going to be'.
However, she was taken aback when Phil revealed that Nigel already knew and that he had come to Walford intending to take his own life.
How will Julie react to this devastating development, and will she and Phil be able to put their differences aside for Nigel's sake?
Speaking about their complicated relationship, actress Karen Henthorn previously said: 'Phil is a very stubborn man, so he'll be a hard nut for Julie to crack. He's not the sort of man who'll sit down with her for a heart-to-heart and be open and honest.
'For now, Julie is stuck in the middle of Nigel and Phil, and Nigel is stuck in the middle of Phil and Julie!' More Trending
She also confirmed that Julie is in it for the long haul, and won't let Phil drive her away.
'Even with the Phil situation, Julie knows that as long as she's with Nigel and he knows how much she loves him, that's what matters,' she explained.

'They are facing a hard road ahead, but they've got each other now. Julie loves Nigel more than anyone else, and she'll go above and beyond to help him. Phil can be as difficult as he wants to Julie, she's not going anywhere.'

Dianne Buswell addresses Strictly Come Dancing future amid uncertainty
Dianne Buswell has addressed her future on Strictly Come Dancing amid uncertainly over her partner in the next series Dianne Buswell has addressed her future on Strictly Come Dancing. The TV star, 36, has appeared as a professional dancer on the BBC Saturday night favourite since 2017 but made it clear that she has no idea what the future holds for her. On Thursday night, she took to Instagram to hold a Q&A session with her followers whilst she was on a train and one asked: "Do you think this will be your last year on Strictly?" Over of a photo of herself dressed up backstage in an elaborate costume, she replied: "I sure hope not!!!!" Another fan was quick to ask Dianne, who will be appearing on the upcoming edition of Strictly Come Dancing when it returns to screens on September 20, who her celebrity partner will be this year. Famous faces to have signed up to hit the dance floor this time around include the likes of Neighbours legend Stefan Dennis, footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and ruby player Chris Robshaw. But, alas, Dianne, who has danced with the likes of Tyler West, EastEnders star Bobby Brazier and last year's winner Chris McCausland, is yet to be told which celebrity she will be helping out with their footwork, as she confirmed: "No idea, who do you reckon?" It comes after the show was thrown into chaos when former Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn gave up his place in the ballroom before the programme had even gone to air. Soap actor Lewis Cope was announced as his replacement. Speaking about joining the show, Lewis - who has starred on Emmerdale as Nicky Miligan - said: "I'm so excited to be swapping the Dales for the dance floor and joining this year's Strictly Come Dancing. I've always been a fan of the show and cannot wait to get started!" Lewis only found out on Monday that he was joining the show. Lewis will be known to soap fans as Emmerdale's Nicky - the son of Caleb and Ruby Miligan. He is no longer in the village but his sister and parents still are. Lewis has also had roles in Vera and he worked with David Beckham on an advertising campaign. Lewis will be known to soap fans as Emmerdale's Nicky - the son of Caleb and Ruby Miligan. He is no longer in the village but his sister and parents still are. Lewis has also had roles in Vera and he worked with David Beckham on an advertising campaign. Just hours earlier, actor and DJ Kristian revealed that he has stepped back for "medical reasons". He said in a statement: 'With a heavy heart, I have to step back from this series of Strictly Come Dancing due to unexpected medical reasons. I was truly looking forward to the journey, and I'm deeply sorry to disappoint anyone who was looking forward to seeing me on the dance floor. Thank you all for your support, and I will be back on my feet very soon, in every sense. Love to all, Kristian." Kristian later released a longer statement, reassuring fans that he's "under treatment already". He said: "I've been given the amazing opportunity of Strictly but sadly I'm having to withdraw. Like so many people at the minute, I have dealing with a high level of stress. And a little bit of grief, if I'm going to be really real. I've always been my mother's son and I have always powered through things like this in the past and any other time of my life actually. "Honestly I think I've got a pretty healthy attitude towards stuff like this. I thought I did at least. For the first time it's manifested physically. And it's caused a spike in my vitals. It's entered an area of concern. I'm a big guy. Always have been, ever since I stepped foot on this earth. "So I take my health very seriously and I do see my doctor all the time. I was checked for the show two weeks before. And everything was fine. So he was happy for me to take part. Please note, I'm ok. I'm under treatment already. And my doctor isn't concerned." He added: "And after 2-3 weeks I'll be pretty much back to normal. But sadly I don't have time for the show now, for all the training and everything like that. And I also don't want to leave them, you and the other contestants hanging. It's not really fair. I'm gutted to say the least.

EastEnders' Callum receives a big shock as Johnny returns home
While EastEnders' Callum Highway (Tony Clay) has had numerous warnings about his affair with Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff), he can't seem to get him out of his head. Johnny has been away on a cruise with his mum Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) over the last few weeks, but for Callum, absence has made the heart grow fonder – despite still being married to incarcerated Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden). But when Johnny finally returns to Walford in the BBC soap next week, Callum gets an unexpected shock from his lover. Forthcoming scenes find Callum elated to see Johnny again, but sadness follows when he later spies Johnny on a date at The Albert. Callum can't help but feel jealous, but the pair are thrown back into each other's orbits later in the week when Johnny helps Callum navigate a delicate situation with his stepdaughter Lexi Pearce (Isabella Brown). Given the clear attraction between them, we can't imagine it will be too long before they fall back into each other's arms… However, they could risk the wrath of Callum's father-in-law Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), who violently attacked Johnny last month after finding out that they were hooking up. The plot is building towards Ben making a return to EastEnders later this year, where he is likely to learn all about Callum's infidelity. The popular character is currently serving a six-year prison sentence for fraud in the States, but it was recently confirmed actor Max Bowden will be reprising his role for a short stint. Ben will be released on temporary license to support Callum at the funeral of his estranged father Jonno.. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? More Trending Teasing the drama the pair's return could bring, a spokesperson for the soap said: 'With Callum having recently cheated with Johnny, and with those feelings expected to grow, Ben may not be revisiting the happy family he left behind. 'Whilst both characters are only back for a short stint as Ben is on day release from Prison, and Stuart has a life away from the Square with wife Raine, you'd think that all things would be smooth sailing, but this is Walford, and a lot can happen in a short amount of time…' View More » EastEnders airs these scenes from Monday 25 August at 7.30pm on BBC One or stream first from 6am on iPlayer.
