Ennis downs Stanionis to unify boxing's IBF, WBA welterweight belts
In an explosive contest in Atlantic City on Saturday, Ennis prevailed after subjecting Stanionis to a barrage of savage body shots to be crowned the best fighter at 147 pounds (66kg).
The 30-year-old Stanionis had started brightly, catching Ennis with two crunching overhand rights in the third round. But Ennis, 27, responded with a dominant fourth round, wobbling Stanionis with his jab while relentlessly targeting the Lithuanian's body.
Ennis sent Stanionis to the ropes and down to one knee with a series of left-handed uppercuts and body shots. Ennis stumbled Stanionis with a big blow to the body right before the bell — and the Philadelphia fighter stared him down as he strutted to the corner.
The seventh round never came after Stanionis's corner decided the Lithuanian could not continue.
'When I fight top-of-the-line guys, good guys, that's what you're going to see,' Ennis said. 'You're going to see a whole different me. When I've got a top guy and I'm fighting for something, it's a whole different story. Can't nobody mess with me.'
Ennis soon covered his body in three championship belts.
'Is this what y'all looking for,' Ennis asked.

— WBA Boxing (@WBABoxing) April 13, 2025Ennis, out of northwest Philadelphia and a rising star in the sport, was already the IBF welterweight champion and he took the WBA and Ring Magazine titles away from Stanionis. Ennis said in the ring following the signature victory he sorely needed to throw himself into the pound-for-pound conversation and that it was too early to decide if he would move up in weight class.
Ennis, who improved to 34-0, with 30 knockouts, said afterwards he had been determined to 'put on a show' in what was the third defence of his IBF title.
'What's crazy is that I had a dream I was going to stop him just like this and it came true,' the American said in his ring interview.
'The biggest part was me having my fun, being myself and having a live body in front of me – I put on a show, I had my fun and I used my speed, power and defence.'
Stanionis fell to 15-1 with nine knockouts following the loss.
The 27-year-old Ennis has won eight straight fights overall and made four straight successful title defences since he defeated Ukrainian fighter Karen Chukhadzhian for the championship in January 2023.
The 30-year-old Stanionis, who represented Lithuania in the 2016 Olympic Games, was elevated to full WBA champion in August when Terence Crawford vacated the WBA belt.

Zverev prepares for double duty vs Khachanov after finishing off Nakashima
ATP Cincinnati The Lindner Family Tennis Centre used to be a House of Horrors for Alexander Zverev. These days, it feels more like a second home. The World No. 3 on Wednesday improved to 14-2 at the Cincinnati Open since the beginning of his title run in 2021 after needing just one game to complete a 6-4, 6-4 win over Brandon Nakashima to reach the fourth round, extending his perfect Lexus ATP Head2Head record against the American to 5-0. The match was suspended overnight due to a heavy storm that rolled through, denying Zverev the chance to serve out the match. Later, Zverev will have the chance to avenge his semi-final loss to Karen Khachanov last week in Toronto, where he let slip a match point. The German has his near-term sights set on reaching the semi-finals for the fourth time in his past four appearance. His recent results are in stark contrast to six consecutive opening-round losses he suffered in his first six outings at the event. On Tuesday night, Zverev rallied from 0/40 in the sixth game of the first set to avoid going down an early break and saved another break point in the second set in the first game back from a 20-minute rain delay. Resuming Wednesday, Zverev fell behind 0/30 on serve after two unforced forehand errors before steadying to close out the match. With the win, Zverev claims his 41st win of the season (second only to Carlos Alcaraz's 50). He also moved to a tie with Andy Roddick for 10th place for most ATP Masters 1000 match wins since the series began in 1990.

Paolini outlasts Gauff in gritty Cincinnati QF
WTA Cincinnati Jasmine Paolini battled past Coco Gauff on Friday night at the Cincinnati Open, rallying for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 quarter-final win -- her third victory over the American in as many meetings this year. Along the way, she also pushed through physical strain and the mental toll of the contest. Paolini had a scare at the start of the third set when she rolled over her ankle while hitting a running forehand that had too much heat for Gauff to handle. After being visited by the trainer before the next game, she shrugged off any lingering discomfort to quickly break Gauff's serve. Paolini had lost a handful of matches from winning positions this year -- including a loss to Aoi Ito from 6-2, 4-1 ahead the last time out in Montreal. And it seemed as though another was going to slip through her fingers when she lost nine straight points from 3-1, 40-30 in the third. Paolini steadied herself when it mattered most, winning seven points in a row and 12 of the final 15 to reach her fifth semifinal of the season, and her second at WTA 1000 level after lifting the Internazionali BNL d'Italia trophy in May. Gauff struggled with consistency, finishing with 16 double faults and 62 unforced errors in a 2-hour, 3-minute match that featured 14 service breaks. 'It was so tough,' Paolini said afterward. 'At the beginning, I was just running and trying to put the ball inside the court ... but after a little bit, I started to feel better the ball. 'I stayed there every point, I tried to fight every point, and it worked.' For a spot in the final, Paolini will have to reverse a string of futility against former Top 10 player Veronika Kudermetova , who's through to her first WTA 1000 semi-final since 2023. She's lost three straight matches against Kudermetova, though they haven't played since meeting at this very tournament in 2021. 'She's a great player, big serve and big weapons,' Paolini said. 'It's always tough to play against her ... this one is going to be a different story. She's playing really well, I'm happy with my game here, so let's see what I can do and hopefully it's going to be a good one.' Zverev beats Shelton to semis On the men's side, world number three Alexander Zverev overcame breathing difficulties to ease into the Cincinnati Masters semi-finals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over American Ben Shelton on Friday. The 28-year-old German, who said the hot and humid conditions left him struggling to breathe, required a brief consultation with a doctor and physiotherapist early in the second set but quickly regained his rhythm. Zverev broke Shelton twice in the opening set and dominated throughout, sealing victory in 77 minutes despite his discomfort. Shelton, ranked sixth in the world, failed to find his game and repeatedly vented his frustration by smashing his racket. Zverev will face French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz in Saturday's semi-final. The Spaniard booked his place with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over Andrey Rublev. In the other match, top seed Jannik Sinner takes on French qualifier Terence Atmane.

Criticism from Birmingham minority owner Brady ‘very unfair': Rooney
PA Media/dpa London Wayne Rooney claims Birmingham minority owner Tom Brady's criticism of him during his spell as the club's manager was 'very unfair'. Rooney, sacked by Birmingham in January 2024 after less than three months in charge, said he was 'really disappointed with the comment' on his new podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show. NFL great Brady, who became a minority shareholder at Birmingham in August 2023, said he was 'a little worried about our head coach's work ethic' during a documentary after visiting Blues' training ground the following November. Former England captain Rooney said he was 'really disappointed' at the seven-time Super Bowl winner's criticism. Speaking via his new show on the BBC, the ex-Everton and Manchester United striker said: 'I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well. 'But what he does understand is - he's a hard worker - we know that.' Rooney added: 'Football is not NFL - NFL works for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think he's very unfair, the way he's come out and portrayed that.' Birmingham were bought out by American consortium Knighthead Capital Management in the summer of 2023 and Brady became a shareholder two months later. Rooney was sacked following 15 matches after Blues had slipped to 20th in the Sky Bet Championship and the club were relegated at the end of the 2023-24 season. Under current boss Chris Davies, Birmingham bounced straight back to the second tier as League One champions last season with an English Football League record points tally of 111.
