Japanese exporters get first taste of Hong Kong food expo, with eyes on bay area
Over 100 Japanese companies specialising in food and health, including at least seven joining for the first time, are showcasing their products at Food Expo Pro, which runs from Thursday to Saturday at the Exhibition and Convention Centre in Wan Chai.
The annual event, organised by the Trade Development Council, features hundreds of exhibitors from all over the world this year, helping to strengthen Hong Kong's position as an international food hub.
Eiri Yokota, CEO of DripSquare, a Japanese company taking part in the expo for the first time, said the yen's relative weakness against the Hong Kong dollar had created an 'unprecedented opportunity' for exporting goods.
'Hong Kong has a well-established business network, and many Japanese companies see it as a springboard to the Greater Bay Area,' he said.
The bay area is Beijing's plan to combine Hong Kong, Macau and nine other cities in Guangdong province into an economic powerhouse with an 87 million-strong population. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu has also hailed Hong Kong's role as a 'superconnector' between the mainland and the rest of the world.

Overseas AI data centre demand powers up China's diesel generator exports
China's exports of diesel generator sets are on the rise as the global boom in artificial intelligence (AI) drives investment in data centres, which in turn is fuelling demand for reliable backup power systems – an area where diesel units remain critical. Analysts said diesel generator sets sell for higher prices overseas, opening up vast opportunities for overseas market growth. In the first seven months of this year, China exported 502,463 diesel generator sets, up more than 20 per cent year on year. The value of the shipments rose more than 28 per cent to US$2.52 billion, according to data released on Wednesday by the General Administration of Customs in Beijing. In July alone, China exported 74,962 diesel generator sets, registering an 8.2 per cent year-on-year increase, while the value climbed 22.9 per cent to US$382.55 million, customs data showed. The rise in diesel generator set exports comes as growing demand for AI services and related computing capacity drives investment in data centres , where diesel units play a critical role as backup power to keep them running during grid outages. Diesel generator sets made in China sell for around 3 million yuan (US$417,807) domestically and about 4 million yuan abroad, according to a note released by analysts at GF Securities this week. 'In the future, the valuation system for diesel generator sets will shift from domestic computing infrastructure benchmarks to international pricing, opening up vast opportunities in overseas markets and expanding long-term market value,' they said.

First batch of 600 Hongkongers granted UK settlement under BN(O) scheme
The first batch of about 600 Hongkongers has been granted settlement in the United Kingdom as of June after the British government introduced a bespoke pathway for residents in 2021, the country's authorities have said. The Home Office, which handles UK immigration, revealed on Thursday the figures under the British National (Overseas), or BN(O), visa scheme, which typically requires these passport holders from Hong Kong to have five years of continuous residence in the country before becoming eligible for permanent settlement. 'While numbers remain relatively small, nearly 600 individuals on the BN(O) route were granted settlement in the year ending June 2025,' the office said in its quarterly figures for immigration. 'Some individuals may be qualifying earlier where time spent on other eligible visa routes, prior to moving onto the BN(O) route, counts towards their five-year residence period.' The office added that around 166,300 people had arrived in the UK under the scheme as of June – an increase of 2,900 individuals, or 1.8 per cent, from 163,400 in March. As of June, 181,609 out-of-country visas and 46,256 in-country extensions have been granted. The office highlighted that BN(O) visa applications, grants and arrivals had continued to decrease since 2021.
