Guwahati: Forest department began the eviction of encroachers from the Doyang Reserve Forest in Golaghat district on Friday, demolishing 146 houses amid heavy security deployment.
However, another 59 houses were left untouched for now, following an Aug 5 order by a division bench of the Gauhati high court, said a district administration official.
The official added that 205 people were illegally occupying over 300 bighas of land in the reserved forest at Negheri Bil at Merapani, which falls along the Assam-Nagaland border. "People of 146 families have already vacated the forest land. The concrete houses were demolished on Friday.
Notices were served on the families on July 24, asking them to vacate the land within seven days. However, following a few petitions before the Gauhati high court, the eviction drive was delayed," the officer said.
Following the notices, two writ petitions were filed by a few people of Negheri Bil, claiming land rights and praying to treat the notices as 'ignored'. A single-judge bench of the court on July 29 extended the eviction window until Aug 7 and instructed the state govt to initiate steps for eviction and conservation of the forest land after the deadline.
The petitioners again approached the two-member division bench of Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar and Justice Arun Dev Choudhury by filing a writ appeal, in which the court on Aug 5 granted the petitioners a 10-day window, until Aug 14, to either submit proof of land allocation or vacate. Till then, the govt was directed not to take any coercive steps against the appellants.
Adhering to the orders, forest department and the district administration left 59 houses untouched and demolished the others.

Doctor found dead at flat, police suspect suicide

Kochi: A doctor at a private hospital in Aluva was found dead in a flat in Marampally near Perumbavoor on Friday morning. Police identified the deceased as Meenakshi Vijayakumar, 37. According to them, prima facie it was suspected to be a case of suicide. The woman seems to have injected herself with a medicine for anaesthesia, said police. "A bottle and syringe were found near the body. We have not found any evidence so far indicating foul play. There were no signs of any struggle. She was staying alone and the flat was locked from inside," said an officer. Her body was found by her colleagues who went to check on her after she failed to turn up for duty and answer phone calls. "According to the security guard, she usually ordered dinner most days but did not do so on Thursday night. It is suspected that she died sometime in the night," said an officer. "We have not found any suicide note. Her phone is locked and an analysis might give us more insight. The exact cause of death will be determined after the autopsy," the officer said. Her body will be handed over to the family after an autopsy on Saturday. Suicides are preventable and help is a phone call away. Those in distress can call Maitri at 0484-2540530. State govt holds Dharmasthala temple in high regard: Minister

Mandya: The state govt holds the Dharmasthala temple in high regard, and the SIT is conducting an investigation strictly in accordance with a court order, said agriculture Mminister and Mandya district minister N Cheluvarayaswamy. Speaking to reporters on Friday at Mandya, he stressed that in a democracy, public opinion must be respected. "On the religious matter of Dharmasthala, we have more trust than the opposition. Our govt has no grievance against Dharmasthala temple," he said. Commenting on the BJP, he remarked, "The saffron party is in poor shape. Lacking serious issues, they have raked up the Rajanna matter. We know why they dropped him. Rajanna is fine; we are all fine. Let the BJP first resolve its own internal disputes—they cannot even change their Leader of the Opposition." On the vacant ministerial berth, he said the decision rests with the party high command, but expressed hope that it would go to Mandya, recommending PM Narendraswamy for the role. Admitting to reduced fertiliser supply in the state, he blamed the Centre, noting that the shortage is nationwide. "Despite cuts, we are ensuring there is no crisis in Karnataka," he said, advising farmers to use nano-urea to protect soil fertility and crop quality. On the cases involving former MP Prajwal Revanna and actor Darshan, he said the law will take its course. "The Supreme Court's cancellation of Darshan's bail keeps alive hope for an appropriate verdict," he added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
