Lynx stay unbeaten with second-half surge to down Valkyries
Natisha Hiedeman scored all eight of her points in two second-half runs, Napheesa Collier returned from a night off with a game-high 24 points and the Minnesota Lynx surged past the host Golden State Valkyries 86-75 on Sunday night in San Francisco.
Returning from a sore knee, Collier completed her third consecutive double-double with a season-high-tying 11 rebounds, and Courtney Williams added 20 points for Minnesota, which remained unbeaten through seven games.
Veronica Burton had a team-high 21 points and Kate Martin a career-high 14 for Golden State, which led by one at halftime and retained a 56-53 advantage after Kayla Thornton's interior hoop in the third minute of the third period.
But the Lynx, who made the WNBA finals last season, took charge from there, starting with a 14-2 burst that featured 3-pointers from Hiedeman, Williams and Bridget Carleton.
Attempting to avoid a third consecutive loss, the Valkyries hung within 68-60 through quarter's end, before Hiedeman had two hoops one that she turned into a three-point play and Collier added a basket in a 7-0 flurry to open the fourth period that broke the game open at 75-60.
Williams also found time for five rebounds and a team-high five assists. Her three 3-pointers in seven attempts helped Minnesota outscore the hosts 33-27 from beyond the arc despite taking eight fewer attempts.
Kayla McBride chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds, while Carleton had 12 points for the Lynx, who completed a two-game Western sweep after dispatching the Phoenix Mercury on Friday without Collier.
The Lynx and Valkyries were meeting for the first time.
Thornton finished with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds for Golden State, which had played the defending-champion New York Liberty on the road in its two previous games.
Julie Vanloo dished off a team-high four assists and swiped two steals for the Valkyries, an expansion team that has sold out all three of its home games at the spacious Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors.

Twins hit three homers, send A's to 19th loss in 20 games
Willi Castro hit two homers and Trevor Larnach also went deep to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 10-3 victory over the Athletics on Tuesday night at West Sacramento, Calif. Royce Lewis ended a 0-for-32 drought with a two-run double and Byron Buxton had a two-run single as the Twins beat the Athletics for the second time in two nights to begin a four-game series. Larnach had three of Minnesota's 12 hits. The Athletics dropped their eighth straight game and have lost 19 of their past 20 contests. Minnesota's Pablo Lopez gave up two runs and four hits over five innings. He struck out four and walked three before leaving with right shoulder tightness, exiting after his third warmup pitch ahead of the sixth inning. Three relievers finished up for the Twins, who scored exactly 10 runs for the second night in a row. Minnesota trailed 2-0 before Castro hit a solo homer to left off Jacob Lopez with one out in the fourth. The Twins pushed four runs across in the sixth, with Larnach opening the inning by crushing a 3-1 fastball and sending it 432 feet to right to tie the score. One out later, Castro hit a line shot over the wall in left to give Minnesota a 3-2 lead. It was his second two-homer outing in five games. The bases were loaded later in the inning when Buxton delivered a two-run single off Osvaldo Bido to give the Twins a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Shea Langeliers led off with a double, and two groundouts pushed him across. The Twins responded in the seventh as Larnach singled and Carlos Correa walked to start the inning. One out later, Ty France singled off Tyler Ferguson, and Brooks Lee was hit by a pitch to force in Larnach. Lewis then ripped a two-run double off the fence in left-center to make it 8-3. The hit was Lewis' first since May 19. A wild pitch made it 9-3. One inning later, Correa's infield out plated another. The Athletics scored in the first inning when Lawrence Butler led off with a double and Brent Rooker followed with an RBI single. The A's tacked on in the third with Tyler Soderstrom stroked his first major league triple and scored on Langeliers' sacrifice fly. Jacob Lopez struck out a career-best nine in 4 1/3 innings of relief. He gave up five runs, five hits and one walk. Grant Holman served as the opener for the Athletics and gave up one hit and one walk in 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Field Level Media

New York and Minnesota still leading the way, both unbeaten Commissioner's Cup play begins
NEW YORK — The New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx picked up right where they left off last season when reaching the WNBA Finals. Both teams have gone undefeated so far this year with the Lynx improving to 8-0 with a win over Phoenix on Tuesday night in a Commissioner's Cup matchup. The Liberty and Lynx faced off last season in the in-season tournament final with Minnesota coming away with the victory. New York got revenge, winning the WNBA championship for the first time in franchise history. With Minnesota 8-0 and New York 7-0 this season, it marks the latest that more than one franchise had been undefeated this long into the season since both the Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks started 2016 winning their first 11 games. New York has dominated its opponents so far, averaging 91.9 points a game, and winning by nearly 23 points a contest. That includes a 48-point victory over Connecticut, the second-largest margin of victory in WNBA history. Minnesota has been finding ways to win close contests. Before beating Golden State by 11 on Sunday, the Lynx had won their previous four games by a total of 18 points. The Lynx and Liberty won't play in the regular season for a few more months with their four matchups coming in the span of a few weeks — the first of which is on July 30. New York led the way as the No. 1 team in the power poll again this week. Minnesota was right behind in second. The national voting panel chose Phoenix third and Atlanta fourth. The Dream moved up three places. Las Vegas, Seattle and Indiana were the next three. Washington, Golden State and Chicago followed. Los Angeles, Dallas and Connecticut rounded out the poll. The WNBA will play its annual in-season tournament over the next few weeks. Each team will play the other teams in their conference one time during that window. The West will have six games with the addition of expansion team Golden State. The East will play five. The teams with the best record in each conference will face off in the title game. The winning team receives a $500,000 cash prize pool to divvy up as well as each player on that squad will get $5,000 in cryptocurrency from Bitcoin. Allisha Gray of Atlanta earned Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career. The Dream guard, who also won the award in June 2023, averaged 26.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4 assists to help Atlanta win both its games last week on the road over Los Angeles and Seattle. Other players receiving consideration included A'ja Wilson of Las Vegas, Napheesa Collier of Minnesota and Sabrina Ionescu of New York. Indiana at Chicago, Saturday. Caitlin Clark may still be sidelined with a quad strain for this rematch between the Fever and Sky. The game will be broadcast on CBS in primetime, the first for the network in WNBA history.
