Indian Biogas Association hails govt move to hike procurement price of CBG
However, it stated that the hike is less than the anticipated and hoped for another upward revision soon.
The petroleum ministry has revised upward the CBG procurement price from Rs 1,380 per Metric Million British Thermal Unit to Rs 1,478/MMBTU, with effect from June 1. The revised rate will be effective till October 31, 2025.
This move demonstrates greater appreciation for the economics of the industry and will meaningfully support unlocking the latent value of bioenergy in India, IBA said in a statement.
Gaurav Kedia, IBA Chairman, said: "This change in price is a step in the right direction for CBG developers as it corresponds with their reality. However, a higher revision was anticipated, considering the economics of the production, which can also shoulder CBG's long-held aspirations of contributing to the sustenance of India's energy independence by fastening progress on existing and new developers in the industry." According to Kedia, while a parity with CNG at pre-tax level is achieved with the announcement, there is an urgent need of further upward revision to honour and provide premium to the greener molecule.
He also suggested "formulating a green certificatation framework with cap and trade should be mandated for companies having higher carbon footprint is the way forward".
IBA in its statement said that a further upward revision could play a crucial role in improving return on investment for entrepreneurs and MSMEs, scaling up decentralised CBG production across rural India, attracting institutional finance and FDI into the sector, and accelerating progress toward national targets on clean mobility, waste management, and energy self-reliance.
The present step reaffirm the government's objective of supporting the adoption of cleaner fuel, facilitating economic development in rural areas, and advancing the country's circular carbon-neutral economy, it added.

Think Gas to invest ₹10,000 cr, aims for top spot in city gas distribution
Think Gas is poised to become the number one city gas distribution (CGD) player in India in the next five years, with plans lined up to invest around ₹10,000 crore, said a top company executive on Wednesday. The company said that the proposed merger between AG&P Pratham and Think Gas will be complete by the first half of 2026, through which it will overtake Indraprastha Gas (IGL), Mahanagar Gas (MGL), and Gujarat Gas to become the second-largest CGD company in India. 'The merger will be complete within the next nine months. We will become the second-largest CGD company, next only to Adani Total Gas, through this,' said Chiradeep Datta, director and chief operating officer, Think Gas. 'We are also planning to invest around Rs 10,000 crore over the next five years to get into the numero uno position,' he told Business Standard. The company has already invested around ₹8,000 crore in the segment. It is awaiting clearance from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) for the deal. Datta added that the company also has plans to utilise its retail network to sell liquefied natural gas (LNG), set up charging points for electric vehicles, and also retail petrol and diesel — an idea already under consideration by the government. It was in February 2025 that both AG&P Pratham and Think Gas announced the merger to form Think Gas. I Squared Capital will be a major shareholder in the combined entity, while other shareholders include Osaka Gas, Sumitomo Corporation, Konoike Group, Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport and Urban Development (JOIN), and AG&P Global. 'Our target is to have over 1 million households and 1,500 fuelling stations in the next few years, from around 550,000 houses and 500 outlets in our network now,' said Datta. Interestingly, media reports indicate that Adani Total Gas already has over 1.1 million residential customers for piped natural gas (PNG) and over 1,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, in addition to 10,417 industrial and commercial customers. Think Gas's network spans 19 geographical areas (GAs) across Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, comprising around 17,000 inch-km of steel pipeline connecting industrial and commercial establishments. Datta said the leadership team of both companies has already been integrated, with Abhilesh Gupta as managing director and chief executive officer. Similarly, for technology integration, it has joined hands with ABB India Ltd, which is offering end-to-end automation and digitalisation of their network across 10 states. Using ABB's cloud-based automation platform, Think Gas has centralised operations and real-time visibility of its CGD networks from its control room in Chennai. 'By digitalising and centralising our natural gas distribution networks, we have significantly boosted operational efficiency, optimised manpower requirements, and leveraged real-time data to make better decisions,' he added. In a statement, the company said it will increase its pipeline network to 24,000 inch-km, feeding over 2,000 CNG stations and 180 million customers in the next few years, and covering 324,000 square kilometres.

Hyundai Q1 FY26 profit down 8.1% amid weak demand, macro headwinds
Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) on Wednesday reported an 8.1 per cent year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 1,362.3 crore in the first quarter of FY26, impacted by sluggish domestic demand, weak hatchback sales, a tense geopolitical situation and macroeconomic uncertainty. Hyundai also noted a structural shift in consumer preference towards compact SUVs over entry-level hatchbacks, which has affected segment volumes. Despite cost pressures, HMIL managed to maintain an EBITDA margin of 13.3 per cent, supported by a rise in exports, higher CNG penetration, and disciplined pricing. 'The prolonged softness in demand, driven by macro challenges and global uncertainties, continued to weigh on market sentiment,' said Unsoo Kim, managing director, HMIL. 'However, we remained focused on expanding our rural presence, updating our product line-up, and enhancing brand competitiveness,' he added. Rural markets accounted for 23 per cent of Hyundai's domestic volumes during the quarter — the company's highest-ever rural penetration. 'The hatchback segment is shrinking — it has dropped from 46 per cent of the passenger vehicle market in FY21 to just 21 per cent in Q1,' said Tarun Garg, chief operating officer, HMIL. 'What we're seeing is a clear shift. Instead of small cars, buyers are opting for entry-level SUVs like the Exter. These offer better space, stronger road presence, and align with evolving customer aspirations,' he noted. Garg added that the share of first-time buyers in Hyundai's sales continues to rise, and the contribution of SUVs in rural areas also mirrors the national trend. 'Even in rural markets, SUVs account for 68 per cent of our sales. The myth that rural customers prefer only small cars is changing.' Hyundai's discount levels during the quarter stood at 3.4 per cent — below the industry average. 'We don't see discounts going up,' said Garg. 'In fact, depending on the festive momentum, they may hold or come down.' Hyundai said that while macroeconomic concerns — including the Indo-Pak situation, the Iran-Israel conflict, and tariff uncertainties — had not directly impacted sales, the overall environment remained volatile. He expressed optimism about the second half of the fiscal year. 'We are entering the festive season early this year, with Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi. The impact of recent RBI rate cuts and income tax relief will likely be visible in H2, as salaried customers plan their spending,' he said. 'Forty-four per cent of our buyers are salaried, and we expect the benefits to start reflecting in demand.' On the export front, Hyundai saw a 13 per cent increase in volumes, with exports accounting for 27 per cent of its overall sales mix. The company said it has seen broad-based growth across emerging markets, reinforcing India's role as a global manufacturing hub. 'We are not facing any shortage of rare earth magnets,' said K S Hariharan, head of investor relations, HMIL, during the earnings conference call. 'We continue to work with our vendors to ensure supply continuity,' Hariharan added. Hyundai has also commenced engine production at its newly acquired Pune facility, which will support both Pune and Chennai operations and improve production efficiency. The company will host its first Investor Day on October 15, where it plans to detail its product roadmap, including 26 new launches by FY30 and its strategy for powertrain diversification. SUVs accounted for 68 per cent of Hyundai's total domestic sales during the quarter — significantly higher than the industry average of 54 per cent. The Creta retained its leadership in the mid-size SUV segment, supported in part by the introduction of its EV variant.
