Nyweide died on April 14 in Bennington, Vermont, according to an obituary shared by her family and statements made to The Hollywood Reporter.
What we know
Nyweide's mother, former actress Shelly Gibson, told The Hollywood Reporter that police in Bennington, Vermont, "are investigating" the circumstances around her daughter's cause of death. According to TMZ, citing local police, her body was found on a riverbank not far from a high school in Bennington around 4 a.m. local time, and she was declared dead at the scene.
"We're told her body was near a lean-to -- a makeshift structure made from downed trees -- and nothing is being ruled out at this point in terms of a cause of death," TMZ reported, citing the Bennington Police Department.
The police are "looking into a range of possible causes, including foul play," TMZ added.
Police told TMZ that Nyweide was with a man when she died, and he is cooperating with investigators. TMZ added that the man is not considered a suspect or person of interest.
"Police tell us there were other people hanging out with Sophie at the lean-to before her death ... and cops are trying to track them down for interviews," TMZ reported.
What we don't know
It remains unclear exactly how Nyweide died. An autopsy is still pending and will include a toxicology report, TMZ reported.
Dig deeper
In a separate statement to TMZ about the death, Gibson said her daughter "was using drugs and was a tiny young woman." She also told TMZ that Nyweide was with other people when she died.
"I didn't know them. There is an investigation ongoing," Gibson told the outlet. "The autopsy results are not in. They said it would take 6-8 weeks. So I can't say definitively."
The backstory
In addition to "Mammoth" and "An Invisible Sign," Nyweide also appeared in films like Noah Baumbach's "Margot at the Wedding," "Shadows & Lies" in Darren Aronofsky's "Noah," starring Russell Crowe.
She had a gig on the ABC hidden-camera show "What Would You Do?" in 2015, which was her final onscreen credit, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
What they're saying
"Sophie was a kind and trusting girl," Nyweide's family wrote in her obituary. "Often this left her open to being taken advantage of by others. She wrote and drew voraciously, and much of this art depicts the depth she had, and it also represents the pain she suffered. Many of her writings and artwork are roadmaps of her struggles and traumas."
"Even with those roadmaps, diagnoses and her own revelations, those closest to her, plus therapists, law enforcement officers and others who tried to help her, are heartbroken their efforts couldn't save her from her fate," the obituary continued. "She self-medicated to deal with all the trauma and shame she held inside, and it resulted in her death. She repeatedly said she would 'handle it' on her own and was compelled to reject the treatment that might possibly have saved her life."
The Source
This story was written based on an obituary published on April 17, 2025, as well as reporting from The Hollywood Reporter and TMZ. It was reported from Cincinnati.

The Real Housewives of Potomac star and her husband, Dr. Ikenna Ihim, welcomed their first baby, son Noah Jidechi Ikeoha Ihim, on Wednesday, May 14, announcing the exciting news exclusively with PEOPLE. The little one entered the world weighing 7 lbs and 1.4 oz. The newly minted mom tells PEOPLE that for the first few weeks with her bundle of joy, she's "simply been in awe." "I just stare at him and think, 'Wow, this is the person that was kicking me in the ribs all those months,' " she jokes. "He's just so special. With all that I've been through and the two years it has taken us to get to this point." "I really just thank God for everything and I fully accept my journey and my struggle because if any of the prior IUIs [intrauterine insemination] worked or IVF [in vitro fertilization] embryo transfers worked, I wouldn't have this exact little boy, and he is worth it all," she adds. "He's changed our lives and those around us for the better, and we wouldn't have it any other way." "I have been very blessed to have so much help, which has made everything easier," she tells PEOPLE. "My mom came to town a few days before my c-section, and she hasn't left my side since. Having her has truly made all the difference for me." Ikenna's mother died in 2019, but the reality star shares that if she were here, she knows she would be there to help her transition into motherhood. "Ikenna's mother passed away in 2019, otherwise, she certainly would have played a role in welcoming us into parenthood," she explains. While the new mom settles into motherhood with her little one, she's making sure to enjoy all of the moments in the newborn phase. "My favorite time of the day are his brief wake periods," she says. "At this stage, newborns sleep most of the day, but the few short moments I get per day where he innocently stares at me are the best." "I also love him just lying on my chest sleeping," she adds, before sharing the more challenging parts of motherhood. "The hardest times are changing his diaper. He really doesn't like the cold or that gust of air that hits once he's getting undressed, so he really cries a lot, but he also hates having a dirty diaper and cries loudly about that as well, so it's a lose-lose." Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Last October, an interview with The Hollywood Reporter revealed that - along with the upcoming "Predator: Badlands" - there was a secret "Predator" project in the works that would release before "Badlands". That film turned out to be "Predator: Killer of Killers", and it's finally streaming. Co-helmed by Dan Trachtenberg, the same director who brought the "Predator" franchise to near universal acclaim with 2022's "Prey", "Predator: Killer of Killers" takes the Predators out of the 21st century and pits them against warriors from all across history. "Predator: Killer of Killers" sees the eponymous hunters stalking Vikings, ninja and samurai in Japan, and World War II pilots in the skies above Europe. "Predator: Killer of Killers" debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a 100% critics rating, and as of the time of this writing it has just barely dropped to a still impressive 97%. The critical consensus is that "Predator: Killer of Killers" is exactly what it should be: bloody, brutal, and action-packed, with a satisfying narrative. For example, Meagan Navarro of Bloody Disgusting writes that the movie "boasts stunning Arcane-inspired animation and a commitment to gory action in its bid to explore lethal brawls with the Yautja throughout time, revealing a deep well of potential for the franchise in the process." Carlos Aguilar of Variety is particularly impressed with the animation, writing that "the gruesome anthology continues to assert animation as a versatile and viable storytelling vehicle for all genres." While the film is rated R, Bob Strauss of the San Francisco Chronicle calls it, "the best movie a 10-year-old boy could ever hope to see. That's because it's really a bunch of bloody, action-filled animated stories in one neat, 90-minute package." Hailey Bieber Reveals Postpartum Stress Over Ongoing Justin Bieber Split Rumors: ‘It's a Mindf–k'

Hailey Bieber opened up about her difficult postpartum experience amid ongoing rumors that she and her husband, Justin Bieber, are experiencing trouble in paradise. 'Being postpartum is the most sensitive time I've ever gone through in my life, and learning a new version of myself is very difficult,' Hailey, 28, told Vogue in an interview published on Tuesday, May 20. 'And to be doing that all the while going on the internet every day and people being like, 'They're getting divorced and they're this and they're not happy': It is such a mindf--k. I cannot even begin to explain it. It's a crazy life to live.' Hailey and Justin, 31, got married in 2018, and they welcomed baby No. 1, son Jack Blues, in August 2024. Despite once seeming like a solid couple, Hailey and Justin have recently been making headlines amid speculation that they're headed for a split. The rumors hit a new level when it was reported that Hailey unfollowed Justin on Instagram, though she insisted that fans had nothing to worry about. 'It's a glitch. Didn't unfollow him. Hope this helps!' she wrote in the comments section of a TikTok video about their alleged estrangement in March. While speaking to Vogue, Hailey added that Justin's experience as a child star has helped her learn how to respond to haters online. 'I've learned so much from Justin, really,' the model said. 'He's been doing this literally since he was a child and he has had to face the most scrutiny of any person that I know. He was like, 'Baby, trust me, I've been here before many, many times. You're not going to win. There is no winning.'' In addition to admitting that rumors about her and Justin's alleged issues have been hard to navigate, Hailey also shared that she hasn't had the easiest time transitioning to motherhood and said she has struggled with her changing body. 'Every day I have to talk to myself, like, 'Hailey, you had a baby … You grew a human. You birthed a human. It's OK. Give yourself grace. Give yourself time,'' she said. 'When people talk about 'bouncing back' — back where, because my hips are wider, my boobs are actually bigger than they were before. They did not go back. And great, I'll take it, but it's not the same body that it was before.' Their relationship rumors come amid concerns for Justin's health. While fans have wondered if Justin's gaunt appearance was due to drug use, his rep previously told TMZ the 'Baby' singer wasn't abusing drugs. In March, an insider exclusively told Life & Style that their relationship had some cracks. 'His behavior's been troubling for some time. What fans are seeing now is just a small taste of what his life is really like,' the source dished. 'He goes through periods where he isolates, then periods where he's active and will spend time with friends. Justin can also have pretty intense low periods.' Additionally, the insider said that Justin's behavior 'takes a toll on Hailey.' Despite their issues, the source added that 'divorce isn't an option right now' and Hailey is 'hoping Justin can turn things around.'
