Capps bests Prock to win PRO Superstar Shootout
'This event is special. It's the second year we've done anything like this, but you have an all-star cast,' said Capps. 'Back in the day, as a kid, you know, I read about the Orange County races and all the stuff, where everybody showed up. This SCAG PRO Superstar Shootout is what it's all about. A lot of our sponsors are big supporters of this event, so thank you, SCAG, for putting all that money up. We're gonna love it, but our NAPA guys, (crew chief) Guido. I cannot say enough about how hard he's worked, and this is the fruit of our team's labor.'
In Top Fuel, Shawn Reed's 3.699s/330.39mph run was enough to beat Josh Hart (3,724s/321.27mph), while Troy Coughlin Jr. won in Pro Stock, defeating Cory Reed.
In the Top Fuel final Reed was facing Floridian and multi-time Top Fuel national event winner Hart, who had posted the two quickest elapsed times in the first and second round of race day. Both dragsters jumped off the starting line together and it was Reed getting to the finish line first with a strong 3.699 second run at 330.39 mph just in front of Hart's equally impressive 3.724 second run at 321.27 mph. Reed's pass was the quickest of the day in Top Fuel as cooler temperatures created optimal racing conditions.
'This is flat out incredible right now,' said an exuberant Reed at the top end. 'It's impossible to think ahead because you haven't done anything. I have to thank Red Line Oil, Matco Tools, All American Automotive. Thanks to all the fans. Man, it's been great with all these people out here. I'm more than blessed right now, and I'm probably happy as I've been in a long, long time.'
While John Force Racing didn't end up getting the FC win with Prock — who had posted a record 3.791s run in qualifying — it scored another big morale booster from the presence of the team's founder and CEO. 16-time series champion John Force was a welcome presence in the JFR compound at Bradenton even though he still is receiving treatment for the traumatic brain injury he suffered in a crash last June at Richmond.
'My wife, Laurie, told me I needed to get back in the game,' said the 157-time NHRA winner. 'And being here in Bradenton was just good for my heart. Watching everybody work, watching the cars and the teams and seeing old friends like Capps, it was just special.
'We didn't win, but I was excited just to be where I need to be,' he said. 'Running my teams and supporting Cornwell, PEAK, Monster, HendrickCars.com and all our other partners. I can't wait to get to Gainesville. To tell you the truth, this is the first time since Richmond I really felt alive again.'
The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series gets underway at Gainesville March 7-9.

Patrick Reed Reflects Upon His Ryder Cup Legacy, Remains Hopeful For Selection
LIV Golf Patrick Reed Reflects Upon His Ryder Cup Legacy, Remains Hopeful For Selection Published Aug. 13, 2025 12:43 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link It wasn't easy getting Patrick Reed to talk about golf. Turns out, he's much more interested in chatting about the NFL and his Houston Texans. Reed loves team sports. He's a C.J. Stroud apologist and went so far as to say that Dak Prescott isn't a top 10 quarterback and, if Stroud were a Cowboy, would prove he was one of the NFL's best at his position. Reed's takes were so hot that I didn't want to change the subject. So I figured: Let's talk golf and football — all at once. Which NFL QB would Reed compare his game to? "Problem is, I look at these NFL quarterbacks and I'm not the most mobile guy in the world," he said with a chuckle. "I mean, it's hard not to say Joe Burrow or Jayden Daniels. I love those guys, because I went to high school on the LSU campus." How else would Reed compare himself to them? "I've always been vocal. I try to lead, even if it's my team or not. I try to set by example. Work hard and really just try to get the guys going," Reed said. "And really, that's the role of all quarterbacks, right? I mean, they're the ones that are supposed to be the leaders of the teams. I want to pump up teams — to be the one that gets the guys going." Patrick Reed is enjoying a strong season on LIV, sitting sixth in the standings. ADVERTISEMENT If you feel like — over the course of his answer — he's making his case to serve on the Ryder Cup team, you're probably not wrong. He's a longshot. But he's holding out hope. That only builds the pressure for Reed heading into LIV Golf Indianapolis this weekend. On the LIV Tour, he currently sits sixth the season-long standings, with six finishes inside the top-ten and an individual win at LIV Dallas in June. He won't make the Ryder Cup team competing in September based on points alone, but maybe he can get hot enough to convince team captain Keegan Bradley to select him. "To be honest with you, obviously, being part of LIV, it's a little harder, right?" Reed said. "Most likely everyone that's a part of LIV is going to rely on a pick — unless you do something spectacular, like Bryson [DeChambeau] has done in the majors." Reed is "Captain America." He earned the nickname in 2014 when he served as an electric force for the U.S. Team. And that's not the only thing that stuck with him from that particular Ryder Cup. Reed said he met a wounded U.S. military veteran who gifted the golfer an American Flag. Since that day in 2014, that flag has not left Reed's bag — not for a single practice or tournament. "That shows what this country means to me," Reed said. The Ryder Cup has a special place in Reed's heart. But his success — with a 7-3-2 individual record — has not been without controversy. He hasn't gotten along with every single one of his teammates. Former members of Team USA have spoken about it. He spoke openly about that. "When I was on PGA Tour before LIV, it was one event a year where you're a part of a team at the President's Cup or Ryder Cup. So you're taking all these individuals and then being like, 'Hey, y'all know how to be best buddies for this one week.' That was hard to figure out," he said. "You have different personalities. When it's just yourself out there on that leaderboard, you have your team at home and stuff, but you're the alpha. And so now you're putting 12 alphas in the same room and being like, 'Hey, y'all have to mend and merge and build that camaraderie.'" Patrick is eager for another shot at Ryder Cup glory. Reed said he felt like things were different for him now. Not only is he among the world's best golfers, but he also thinks he's grown as a teammate, thanks in large part to his work on the LIV Tour, where he's teammates with captain Dustin Johnson, Harold Varner and Thomas Pieters on the 4Aces, who sit at fifth in the team standings. Reed indicated he's worked hard to understand how to work within that group. "Being a part of LIV, we know how that [team dynamic] is," Reed said. "We know how to adapt. We know how to reach different personalities, how to feel, to handle them. …I feel like I've grown a lot on that aspect. And you know, because of that, I feel like I'd be a huge asset for the team." Even if Reed doesn't end up making the team this year, which he has acknowledged will be a "uphill battle," there could be possibilities down the line. For example, what about as a team captain? "That'd be awesome. Of course," he said. "For me, anything that has to do with the United States, anytime I get to wear red, white and blue, anytime I can represent my country — it means so much to me." Reed said he felt Bradley would make the right decision. No matter what happens, Reed made it clear the Ryder Cup will be a big part of his legacy. "When you're on the tours, everyone has that on their schedule. You're always trying to make the team. And it's the one even that — at least in the past — you don't get paid for it. You're going out there and representing your country and going to play because want to win so badly for your country and something bigger than you," he said. "I think it's a huge part of your legacy. … I think that's a part of my legacy as 'Captain America.'" Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed's deep ball has continued to improve this preseason
Texas A&M's first scrimmage of the preseason took place on Saturday under second-year coach Mike Elko. While the media was not present, several key takeaways from those who were in attendance included starting quarterback Marcel Reed's deep ball, which has steadily improved, as all the work the redshirt sophomore has put in this summer should begin to pay off. Thanks to the Aggie media team, who have released two short clips of the scrimmage, Monday's video included Reed hitting sophomore wide receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman in stride on a go route, which could end up being one of the surprise connections that finally opens up Texas A&M's passing game under OC Collin Klein. Marcel Reed's improvement as a passer is undoubtedly one of the main storylines this summer. Still, Bethel-Roman's rise this preseason has him on track to win the No. 3 wide receiver job behind transfers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver. Again, as I wrote over the weekend, Bethel-Roman was, and continues to be, the most underrated commitment in the 2024 class, flipping from Arkansas, and continuing the long line of Missouri, Texas natives to play college football at Texas A&M. Over the last two weeks, the sophomore has been the talk of the offense, possessing a fluid route running style and has looked like the fastest player on offense. For Reed to become a better deep ball passer, the ability to separate against safeties in the third level of the field is key, something Bethel-Roman thrived with during his prolific high school career. TexAgs co-owner Billy Liucci, the most trusted Texas A&M insider, notes that that is just one example of Reed's deep passing game, hitting multiple receivers during the scrimmage, and taking full advantage of the added speed, quickness, and separation against the Aggies' talented secondary. Fantasy football injury report preseason: Latest on Najee Harris, Joe Mixon and others
There are only a few weeks remaining until the start of the 2025 NFL regular season, and fantasy football drafts are well underway at this stage of the calendar. The first week of the preseason is in the books. Many positional battles were on full display and now all 32 teams have experienced their first live game action in 2025. As is the nature of the NFL, multiple players are dealing with injuries and could potentially miss time. Here is the latest injury status for star players that could affect your fantasy rosters as draft season heats up. Fantasy football injury report: Preseason Mooney suffered a shoulder injury in practice on July 25 while diving for a deep pass. He remains without a timetable to return to the field, and head coach Raheem Morris has been noncommittal on Mooney being ready for Week 1. The Ravens tight end suffered an ankle sprain and a broken bone in his foot during practice on July 29. The injury required surgery, and his timetable to return at the time was five to six weeks, which aligns closely with Week 1. The Bills' top target from 2024 suffered a high ankle sprain during practice on Aug. 1. He is expected to miss the preseason but head coach Sean McDermott has said Shakir is expected to be healthy in time for Week 1. The first running back selected in the 2024 NFL Draft suffered his second ACL tear in his right knee in as many years. He has been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and won't play in the upcoming 2025 season. The Panthers will move forward with Chuba Hubbard and Rico Dowdle as their primary running backs. The rookie fifth-round pick left practice early on Thursday, Aug. 7 and an MRI revealed a bone bruise in his heel. He is in a wide-open backfield competition with veteran Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders for touches. He is not expected to miss extended time. Reed has been dealing with a sprained foot, and head coach Matt LaFleur has said he is hopeful Reed will be ready for Week 1, listing him as "day-to-day". The 25-year-old receiver was seen wearing a walking boot during the preseason game on Saturday, Aug. 9. Watson suffered a torn ACL in Week 18 of the 2024 season and appears ahead of schedule in his recovery. Still, he is expected to begin the season on the PUP list. This designation would keep him out at least the first four weeks of the regular season. Mixon opened training camp on the non-football injury list (NFI) after dealing with a foot injury he suffered earlier in the offseason. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has reported that Mixon will be re-evaluated closer to the start of the regular season and he reportedly has not suffered any setbacks. Dell is on the PUP list and has no timetable for a return after suffering a gruesome knee injury in Week 16 of the 2024 season. The Texans' top healthy receivers are Nico Collins, Christian Kirk and rookies Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel. Richardson suffered a dislocated right pinky finger in the Colts' preseason opener on Aug. 7. He isn't expected to miss time after throwing at practice on Saturday, Aug. 9. The veteran receiver suffered a high ankle sprain during practice on Tuesday, July 29. He has not practiced since, but head coach Andy Reid has said it will not require surgery, and it doesn't sound like something that will keep him out for the start of the regular season. The veteran running back suffered a superficial eye injury on July 5 as a result of a fireworks accident. He was later placed on the NFI list on July 17. Head coach Jim Harbaugh was noncommittal on Harris' status for Week 1 when speaking to reporters on Friday, Aug. 8. He added that "there's a chance" Harris is ready for the start of the season. This remains a situation to monitor. The 37-year-old has not practiced fully in training camp, but head coach Sean McVay announced Stafford was to make his 2025 camp debut Monday, Aug. 11. On Wednesday, Aug. 6 NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Stafford was "dealing with an aggravated disc" in his back and had an epidural shot to relieve the pain. The veteran QB has made enough progress to return to the field. The Swiss Army Knife player for the Saints is on the PUP list. He is working his way back from an ACL tear that he suffered in Week 13 of the 2024 season. He has been seen working off to the side throughout camp. Lazard suffered a shoulder injury in the Jets' preseason opener on Saturday, Aug. 9. He was seen wearing a sling on his right arm after the game. He is set to undergo further tests. The Jets' second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft suffered a high ankle sprain during practice on Aug. 4. The LSU product has received praise from his teammates and coaches and appears ready to be the Week 1 starter, but he will miss some time and does not have a timetable to return. The Eagles' star wideout has been held out of practice since Aug. 1 as he nurses a hamstring injury. There doesn't seem to be concern about Brown's status, but it's a situation worth monitoring. Aiyuk is not expected to be ready for Week 1 as he works his way back from an ACL injury he suffered in Week 7 of the 2024 season. He remains on the PUP list and general manager John Lynch told reporters Thursday, Aug. 7, he "doesn't think" Aiyuk will be cleared for Week 1. White exited the Buccaneers' preseason opener on Aug. 9 after suffering a groin injury. He is set for further testing to determine the severity of the injury. An extended absence would open the door for Sean Tucker to take on a complementary role to starter Bucky Irving. Godwin is on the PUP list as he works his way back from a dislocated ankle he suffered during Week 7 in 2024. General manager Jason Licht told reporters on Tuesday, Aug. 5, that Godwin is "exactly where" the team hoped he would be in his recovery, but there's still no decision on his Week 1 status. Rookie first-rounder Emeka Egbuka stands to gain the most if Godwin misses the start of the regular season. Spears suffered a high ankle sprain in the team's preseason opener on Aug. 9. Head coach Brian Callahan announced that the running back will "miss a couple of weeks at least."
