North Coast estates join forces in response to municipal electricity crisis

Some of the North Coast's leading estates have joined forces to collectively lobby for improved electricity supply.
The Residential Estate Electrical Task Team (REETT) was formed in late January in response to the damaging electricity crisis on KwaDukuza's southern grid. It includes representatives from Zimbali, Simbithi, Brettenwood, Dunkirk, Prince's Grant and Seaward estates, among others.
The task team should not be confused with the KDM Electrical Task Team, also founded this year in response to the crisis, which includes some estate representation alongside the Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association, the iLembe Chamber of Commerce and the KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) itself. Unlike REETT, the municipal task team has a broader, regional mandate.
'The [power] disruptions highlighted the urgent need for structured collaboration between estates, municipal authorities and Eskom to prevent similar disruptions in future, particularly during peak seasons such as Easter and year-end holidays,' said the REETT in a recent statement.
'Recognising that each estate faces unique challenges within the broader municipal framework, the REETT was created to work collaboratively with KDM and Eskom, ensuring estates have a platform to engage proactively on issues of electrical infrastructure management, maintenance and upgrades.'
Meetings will be held at least quarterly.
The task team's primary objectives include:
Operational and technical contributions:
Providing expert input to improve service delivery and infrastructure sustainability.
Enhanced communication protocols: Establishing clear, reliable channels for managing power outages and updates.
Collaboration with KDM and Eskom: Developing co-governance models for shared maintenance and upgrades.
Participation in the KwaDukuza Electrical Task Team: Aligning estate-level initiatives with broader municipal and business chamber strategies.
Legal and regulatory compliance: Ensuring all interventions adhere to NERSA and other regulatory requirements.
Building trust and transparency: Strengthening relationships between KDM and residential estates to advocate effectively for homeowners' interests.

In its results statement issued on Friday, Mr Price said it reached a milestone of now having just more than 3,000 stores during the full year, as it opened 184 new stores across its 15 trading chains. Weighted average trading space increased 4.3%. However, Global economic uncertainty has cast a shadow when it comes to growth prospects in 2025, as potential US tariffs threaten markets worldwide, it said. 'The South African economy has not been spared from this impact and its forecast gross domestic product growth has been revised downwards from the previously bullish outlook at the end of 2024,' the group noted. It added that South African consumers have received some short-term relief through lower inflation, decreasing fuel prices, and interest rate cuts totalling 1 percentage point, all of which contributed to increased disposable income, Mr Price said. It added that, while real wage growth is showing signs of recovery, the sustainability of these improvements remains questionable given both global and domestic economic uncertainties. Despite these challenges, Mr Price remains focused on its fashion-value merchandise strategy, which continues to resonate with its growing customer base. The retailer maintains its position as South Africa's most shopped clothing store according to MAPS data, reinforcing its commitment to being the "customer's value champion" even in volatile times. The retailer gained 0.5 percentage points of market share according to Retailers' Liaison Committee data, while expanding its gross margin by 0.80 percentage points to 40.5%. The group achieved a record operating profit of R5.8bn, with its operating margin increasing 20 basis points to 14.2%. Basic and headline earnings per share grew 11.0% and 10.7% cents respectively. Its second half performance was particularly strong, with diluted headline earnings per share growing 12.1%, it said. This came despite February's weaker retail performance and the shift of school holidays and Easter from March to April, Mr Price noted. Mr Price attributed the improved performance to better sales momentum and lower markdowns following a more subdued first half in the retail sector. Group CEO Mark Blair said that, while the first half presented challenges for retailers, conditions improved in the second half. "We are very satisfied to have gained similar levels of market share in both periods, reflecting the value we were able to provide our customers despite very different economic conditions," he said. Blair added that growth in sales momentum through the second half was supported by strong comparable store sales growth and gross profit margin gains across all trading segments. Eskort CEO Arnold Prinsloo warns that South Africa's meat industry is heading into a 'perfect storm' that could drive prices out of reach for millions. Speaking to BusinessTech , he said that a combination of beef shortages, a ban on chicken imports from Brazil, and the collapse of a major poultry producer has put the country's food security at serious risk. The warning comes after a confirmed outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease at a Gauteng feedlot owned by Karan Beef, South Africa's largest beef producer. The facility has been placed under quarantine, slashing slaughter volumes by nearly 75%. 'If the quarantine drags on or the disease spreads, beef supply will shrink and prices will rise,' Prinsloo said. Adding to the pressure is the recent ban on chicken imports from Brazil, imposed on 15 May after an avian flu outbreak. According to The Citizen , Brazil supplies South Africa with 19 000 tonnes of mechanically deboned meat (MDM) per month. This meat is used in low-cost processed products like polony and Viennas. Local producers can supply only 100 tonnes. 'Some smaller producers have already run out of raw materials. This ban alone threatens 400 million affordable meals per month,' Prinsloo warned. Meanwhile, Daybreak Foods, one of South Africa's largest poultry producers, has gone into business rescue and recently culled 350 000 chicks due to feed shortages. 'This will squeeze chicken supply even further and drive up prices across the board,' Prinsloo said. Prinsloo, alongside industry groups like AMIE and the South African Meat Processors Association, has urged Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen to review the import ban. They want the restriction narrowed to the affected region of Brazil rather than the entire country. 'This would preserve supply chains, protect public health, and safeguard thousands of jobs,' he said. Prinsloo stressed the urgency of the situation. 'This triple threat livestock disease, import bans, and production failures demands immediate government action,' he said. 'If we wait until shelves are empty and prices skyrocket, it'll be too late.' The Endumeni Chamber of Commerce meeting last week laid bare the township's deepening woes, as members heard that Eskom debt has ballooned to R294 million despite a repayment agreement. The municipality is now paying R1.8 million a month simply to cover arrears and current costs—yet Eskom still flags Endumeni as a high risk, warning of possible load shedding. 'They do not budget properly,' said newly elected Chamber president Alan Schonken, adding that infrastructure maintenance should account for 8% of the capital budget but typically sits just above 3%. Hence, the perpetual battle with poor roads and failing streetlights. Former councillor Anthon Raubenheimer pointed out that three years ago, Endumeni had no Eskom debt, but now finds itself in turmoil. Members lamented the absence of Endumeni and Umzinyathi councillors at Chamber meetings. 'The only recourse is to petition higher authorities,' one member declared, urging collective action to pull the municipality back from the brink of total collapse.'
