Don't take matters into your own hands, AGC urges public over flag issue

The Star3 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) is advising the public to leave any action on flag-related issues to authorities and not take matters into their own hands.
"This includes raiding the premises of the suspected parties, sharing personal information or making reckless accusations on social media, provoking or threatening the individuals or organisations involved and taking over the role of authorities, such as ordering the flag to be taken down or seizing the materials involved without legal authority.
"All complaints or related information should be channelled to the authorities for appropriate action in accordance with the principle of the rule of law," the AGC said in a statement on Friday (Aug 15).
The AGC also said legal action could be taken against any improper installation or display of the Malaysian flag that could cause confusion, misunderstanding or public concern.
The AGC said all parties are responsible for respecting the Malaysian flag as a symbol of national sovereignty and for complying with the laws and guidelines in effect regarding its use.
"The AGC views seriously any act of displaying, hoisting, or installing the Malaysian flag in a disorderly or improper manner," the statement said.
The AGC noted that among the reported incidents of the Jalur Gemilang being displayed upside down were at a shop in Kepala Batas, Penang, and at a school in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan. Other incidents included the display of an incomplete Malaysian flag in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results report book and on the official social media accounts of several local newspapers. – Bernama

Malaysian tourists with burn injuries in Bangkok face long recovery and mounting expenses

Two Malaysian tourists were critically injured after being set on fire by an unemployed man on Ratchadamri Road in Bangkok. -- PHOTO: SCREENGRAB FROM X BANGKOK (Bernama): The families of two Malaysian tourists set ablaze here on August 7 fear their medical expenses could exceed insurance coverage. Gan Kin In, 80, said he and his wife, Kek Ley Lan, expressed gratitude to the Malaysian and Thai governments, along with other relevant agencies, for their assistance following the incident involving their daughter and her boyfriend. "We have been in Bangkok for the past week. The Malaysian government, through the Embassy, has given us constant support, while the Thai side, through the Tourist Police and the Tourism and Sports Ministry, has provided transportation and accommodation,' he told Bernama on Friday. The two Malaysians, Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, and her boyfriend Ong Yik Leong, 26, were attacked by an unemployed man who allegedly doused them with thinner before setting them alight near a shopping mall on Ratchadamri Road at about 10 pm on Aug 7. However, Kin In said they were worried about the medical expenses, which had already reached around 150,000 baht after just over a week of treatment at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. He said the Thai government had agreed to provide total compensation of up to 550,000 baht per person. "We are worried that the total amount of compensation may not be enough to cover the total medical costs here, as the charges are quite high,' he said. Kin In, a retiree, added that doctors were not optimistic about allowing the victims to be transferred back to Malaysia anytime soon. "Yesterday, Xiao Zhen had a fever and high blood pressure, but she has recovered today. Her condition is now more stable, and if her health permits, doctors will carry out minor skin operations in phases,' he said. In the latest update on Xiao Zhen's condition, Kin In said doctors estimated it would take around two months for her to recover after the skin graft procedures, which would need to be done in stages to minimise pain and discomfort. Meanwhile, Yik Leong, who is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Police General Hospital, is also reported to be in a stable condition and is being cared for by his aunt, Ong Siew Kien. - Bernama

Decades-long wait ends as Melaka hands over 47 approval letter for railway reserve land

ALOR GAJAH: After more than 30 years, the issue involving railway reserve land in Pengkalan here has been resolved, with the Melaka government handing over 47 approval letters for state land application, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He said the handover ceremony reflected the state government's concern in understanding the community's needs and ensuring that every policy and development project delivers a positive impact on the people's lives. "A total of 45 applications involved the Pengkalan railway reserve land that had been delayed for three decades, and two plots for temples. "Also approved was Tenaga Nasional Bhd's (TNB) application to place a substation on Plot 1, Mukim Kelemak, Alor Gajah district, which will provide electricity to residential, commercial, hospital, and government office areas, benefiting more than 3,050 users," he said today. He said this at the handover of the approval letters in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) programme for the Rembia state constituency, which was also attended by the coordinator for the constituency, Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan. He said this year, 96 state land applications have been approved in the district, followed by the issuance of Notice 5A by the land administrator. Notice 5A is an official document informing applicants of the fees due, including document preparation and registration costs, that they must pay to obtain the land titles. "It is on this land that new homes will be built, gardens will be filled with flowers, children will run and play, and families will gather every weekend. "Its value is not merely measured in square feet, but in the space to build a life and pass down a legacy of peace to future generations," he said. He said the state government imposes land premiums below market rates, ranging between RM9,000 and RM25,000, depending on the land size, compared to hundreds of thousands of ringgit. "A special five per cent discount is offered to Notice 5A recipients who settle payment within three months, subject to the condition that no extension requests or appeals for premium reduction are made," he added. – Bernama

Police bust heroin lab in Bukit Tambun, arrest three suspects

NIBONG TEBAL: Police arrested three men and uncovered a heroin processing laboratory in Bukit Tambun during two raids on Tuesday. The suspects included two locals and a Sri Lankan national, aged between 25 and 46. Seberang Perai Selatan district police chief Superintendent Jay January Siowou confirmed the arrests following intelligence-led operations. In the first raid at Taman Tambun Permai, police seized 1,113 grammes of heroin and 641 grammes of heroin base. Authorities also confiscated four kilogrammes of caffeine and various drug-processing chemicals and equipment. The second raid nearby led to the arrest of a Sri Lankan man with 26 kg of caffeine. The total value of the seized drugs was estimated at RM74,500. Investigations revealed the first location was a heroin processing lab, with one local suspect as the mastermind. The other two suspects allegedly worked as assistants and couriers for the syndicate. Police believe the syndicate had been active since January, supplying heroin to the local market. Both local suspects had prior drug and criminal records, while the Sri Lankan national had no previous offences. The seized drugs could potentially supply 49,500 addicts, according to police estimates. Four vehicles, including a Toyota Vellfire and Honda Civic, were also confiscated, valued at RM134,500. The total haul from the raids, including drugs and vehicles, amounted to RM209,000. All three suspects have been remanded for seven days until August 19 for further investigations. The case is being probed under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty upon conviction. - Bernama
